Preformat SYSCF entry 'WIZARDS' so that it can be displayed during panic
feedback without allocating memory for the formatted list at that time.
It also gets displayed for help's "support information" ('?k').
For panic(), push "it may be possible to rebuild" to a second line since
the formatted usernames might make the line long.
On OSX 10.5, save file compression and uncompression fail when I run
under debugger control (for gdb, at least; I don't know why). I used
'#panic' to try something out. panic() calls exit_nhwindows(), then
after some messages calls dosave0(). Saving calls docompress_file()
and when that fails on tty it tries to call clear_nhwindow(WIN_MESSAGE)
but WIN_MESSAGE has been torn down already, leading to a nested panic().
Avoid the call to clear_nhwindow() if windows aren't up.
When reading a novel, select a random passage which hasn't been shown
already. Once you've run through all the passages, it resets to get
them all again (with new random order that might happen to the be same
order if there aren't many passages). Switching to a different novel--
even another copy of the same one--will cause the previous passage
selection to be discarded and restarted from scratch if the prior book
is read again. Passage tracking for the most recently read novel is
kept across save and restore. (That means I needed to bump EDITLEVEL,
so it will need to be reset to 0 again before release.)
Explicitly combine adjacent string literals so that pre-ANSI compilers
still have a chance to compile the code. I thought these had already
been dealt with, but I kept stumbling across them while reformatting,
so am trying to get them all out of the way now.
His changes add file_exists() to sys/vms/vmsfiles.c, which might be
needed in the future but is not useful here. Checking for 'gbd' and
'grep' for PANICTRACE support (which I had working on Alpha--and
ought to work on VAX, no idea about IA64--before losing access to vms)
is pointless since neither is used.

Add a couple more tribute easter eggs.
- can lead to a remark by Death if you happen to have a pratchett book on
your person, as suggested by M. Stephenson (fat chance you will, or
think to #chat if you do, but it could be a tournament novelty or something
obscure to strive for).
- can draw some additional Death quotes from the tribute file. (There's two
in there right now. If anyone wants to add or suggest some more, please go
ahead. The Death quotes are at the end of the tribute file. One-liners
only please or the code will only pull the last line.
When reading a passage from a tribute novel, put the final attribution
line "[$TITLE, by Terry Pratchett]" into message history, comparable to
the summary line for deliver-by-window quest messages.
MSGTYPE allows the user to define how messages in the message
area behave. For example:
MSGTYPE=stop "You swap places with "
would always make that message prompt for -more-. Allowed types
are "show" (normal message), "hide" (do not show), "stop" (wait
for user), and "norep" (do not repeat message).
Adding this, because it's relatively simple, proven to work, and
it seemed to be the major thing betatesters felt was lacking when
compared to NAO.
I'll push a formatting guide at some point. There may still be
outstanding changes, but please feel free to resolve those as you arrive
a them.
To the best of my knowledge, there is no changes to the actual code
content, but the formatter does have the occasional bug. If you run into
an issue, please fix it!
Replace most uses of isspace() with a simple test for ' ' after
processing the string buffer with mungspaces (which replaces tab
with space, converts instances of consecutive whitespace into a
single space, and removes leading and trailing spaces). The uses
where this wasn't done now cast their argument to (uchar) so that
platforms with signed chars will never pass negative values to it.
I didn't mess with the menu coloring code (except for casts to the
isspace() argument); it almost certainly could benefit from using
mungspaces. I did mess with the symset processing quite a bit,
and hope I haven't accidentally broken anything. Default symbols
and DECgraphics symbols still parse and display ok, so the rest of
dat/symbols should be ok too. I didn't test symbols in the user's
config file because I don't remember how that's supposed to work.

Adjust the code and the command line Makefile so that
you no longer have to choose whether to build the tty
version NetHack.exe, or the gui version NetHackW.exe.
Both will now be built in a single 'nmake install' pass.

should be able to use those functions as long as it has something that
can pass as a debug window.
also, add a non-wildcard-accepting version of showdebug for the dumpit()
functions in dungeon.c and questpgr.c; this makes DEBUGFILES=* workable
without being excruciatingly painful
It should now be randomly disabled for a 3rd of Gehennom, to make things
a tad more interesting there. It's also disabled in Baalzebub's lair,
to make things a little more interesting.
Still don't know why the beetle is disappearing.

In order to get level file locking correctly again post 3.4.3
with the newer compilers for windows, I had to funnel close()
calls to an intercepting routine.
I had two choices:
1. Surround every close() in at least 9 source files with messy:

2. Replace every close() with nhclose() and
deal with the special code in the nhclose()
version for windows, while just calling
close() for other platforms (in files.c).
It is also possible, although not done in this commit,

in a header file for non-windows, rather than funnel
though a real nhclose() function in files.c.
