be5143bb74 window-port updates
Remove start_screen() and end_screen() from the
Window-port interface.

They were only ever used by tty, and there was a comment
carried to several window-ports about how they "really
should go away. They are tty-specific"

term_start_screen() and term_end_screen() are part of
terminal/NO_TERMS supporting routines now.

6c0ae092c6 distinguish global variables that get written to savefile
The g? structs had a mix of variables that were written to
the savefile, and those that were not.

For better clarity and to distinguish those that end up in
the savefile, relocate some g? variables that get written
directly to the savefile into different structs.

This updates EDITLEVEL, although technically it probably
didn't need to, since savefile contents are not changing.

Details:

Related note:
There are some pointer variables that are heads of chains that were not
moved from 'g?' to 'sv?', because they are not actually written to the
savefile directly, but the objects/monst/trap/lightsource/timer in the
chains they point to are. That can be changed, if desired.
Examples: gi.invent, gm.migrating_objs, gb.billobjs, gm.migrating_mons,
          gf.ftrap, gl.light_base, gt.timer_base

284452796c redo tty resizing
Rest of 'not PR #1102'. Resizing the terminal while getpos was in
operation recalculated the map from scratch instead of redrawing what
the core considers to already be shown. And it was always operating
while an asynchronous signal was excuting which could potentially
clobber whatever was running at the time the signal arrived.

This uses same redrawing as the prior '^R during getpos()' fix. It
also only performs the resize while tty_nhgetch() is waiting for
input. If that is the situation at the time that the signal arrives
then it will resize immediately (while in the asynchronous signal
handler); if not, it will set a flag and tty_nhgetch() will do the
resize the next time it gets called.

This builds with TTY_PERM_INVENT enabled and doesn't seem to be any
worse than before, but there are bugs with that. The only way I could
get perminv to appear was to save and restore, then perm_invent was
honored for both RC file and mO command. And once I managed to get it
to display, moving an item from a lower case slot to slot 'A', made
that item vanish; nothing appeared in the invent's right hand panel.

Both of those misbehaviors already happen prior to this commit. I
also saw an abort+panictrace if I resized while at the "Dump core?"
prompt when running the pre-commit code and didn't see that with the
post-commit code (although the prompt wasn't shown so I couldn't tell
that it was waiting for an answer). The abort probably sounds scarier
than it warrants; I suspect that the pre-commit code just treated the
resize as answering 'y' for some reason, possibly a stale value in the
variable it uses.

02a48aa8cf split g into multiple structures
The consolidation of global variables from scattered source
files into decl.c and declared in decl.h was begun in 3.7.0.
Their placement in common files was done for centralized
initialization and potential re-initialization during a
"play again" scenario.

It wasn't really necessary for all of them to be housed in a
single huge structure to meet the "play again" requirement,
and the single huge structure has been a little unwieldy when
it comes to maintenance.

Following this commit, instead of one single extremely large structure
named 'g' to house all of the relocated global variables, they
are distributed into several ga through gz.

To make things easy for the developer, each variable is placed
into the struct corresponding to the starting letter of the variable.
That way, no lookup is required in order to know which struct houses
a particular variable, it is a simple match to the starting letter
for all the centralized global variables.

A global variable named 'amulets', would be found in ga.
    ga.amulets
     ^ ^
A global varable named 'move', would be found in gm.
    gm.moves
     ^ ^
A global variable named 'val_for_n_or_more' would be found in gv.
    gv.val_for_n_or_more
     ^ ^
A global variable named 'youmonst' would be found in gy.
    gy.youmonst

ebdfafb42d sys/vms/*.c - mostly reformatting
I'm not sure whether basic formatting cleanup belongs in 3.6.1, but
there are also a couple of strings that got split and require the
implicit concatenation of adjacent string literals introduced with
C89/C90. The code itself compiles with pre-ANSI compilers, or at
least used to--most of it was developed with one....

Much of it is tabs in comments. But there was one substantive item:
an obsolete reference to "use 'Q' to Quit" after however many years....

fabf9cd901 VA_DECL/VA_END usage
Make the variadic functions look more like ordinary code rather than
have the function opening brace be hidden inside the VA_DECL() macro.
That brace is still there, but VA_DECL() now needs to be followed by
a visible brace (which introduces a nested block rather than the
start of the funciton). VA_END() now provides a hidden closing brace
to end the nested block, and the existing closing brace still matches
the one in VA_DECL().

Sample usage:
void foo VA_DECL(int, arg) --macro expansion has a hidden opening brace
{ --new, explicit opening brace (actually introduces a nested block)
  VA_START(bar);
  ...code for foo...
VA_END(); --expansion now provides a closing brace for the nested block
} --existing closing brace, still pairs with the hidden one in VA_DECL()

This should help if/when another round of reformatting ever takes place,
and also with editors or other tools that do brace/bracket/parenthesis
matching.

I had forgotten that there were variadic functions in sys/* and ended
up modifying a lot more files than intended. The majority of changes
to those just inserted a new '{' line so that revised VA_END()'s '}'
won't introduce a syntax error. A couple of them needed VA_END() moved
so that local variables wouldn't go out of scope too soon. Only the
Unix ones have been tested.

97d6fade74 Reformat all C files.
I'll push a formatting guide at some point. There may still be
outstanding changes, but please feel free to resolve those as you arrive
a them.

To the best of my knowledge, there is no changes to the actual code
content, but the formatter does have the occasional bug. If you run into
an issue, please fix it!

7002734ca5 vms Meta key hack (trunk only)
I can't figure out how to make PuTTY use the Alt key to function as
a Meta key and set a character's high bit, so I used this hack to test
the M-5 fix just committed. This lets me specify a character to be used
to force the next character to have its high bit set, so I can fake the
Meta key with a two character sequence. (I used the back-tick/accent,
since nethack doesn't do anything special with it.) Conceivably something
like this should be promoted to the core; this just affects VMS, and only
when vmstty.c is compiled with DEBUG defined.

fdbc2c9e86 several hangup tweaks (trunk only)
NOSAVEONHANGUP isn't documented anywhere. I don't see why it should
wipe out recoverable level files just because it doesn't want to build a
save file out of them during the hangup. Leave them intact if checkpoint
is active. If someone really wants to make them always go away, they'll
need to disable INSURANCE as well as enable NOSAVEONHANGUP.

tty's getret() -> xwaitforspace() could get stuck in a loop after
hangup, depending upon the state of terminal shutdown (accepting EOF or
ESC cares about cbreak mode?). Make xwaitforspace() become a no-op during
hangup processing.

vms's call to hangup() from an exit handler took place after the
terminal has been reset (the exit handler for the latter is registered
later so executes sooner). Then exit_nhwindows() resulted in a second tty
reset attempt and settty() -> setctty() encountered an error (which it
reported, triggeting a getret() call). Make the vms code correctly guard
against multiple resets.
