2708d3b330 fix mon_leaving_level
Reported directly to devteam: changing levels while riding gave an
impossible warning, "no monster to remove".

mon_leaving_level() was trying to take hero's steed off the map but
that isn't on the map in the first place. Only noticable if built
with EXTRA_SANITY_CHECKS enabled. Normally remove_monster(x,y) just
sets level.monsters[x,y] to Null but with extra checks enabled it
first checks whether that is already Null.

4a01c8fbd7 Monster list iterator
Add some basic functions to iterate through the monster list,
ignoring dead monsters. Mainly just to allow splitting up code
into discrete functions.

Not quite happy with the get_iter_mons_xy - should probably have
a pointer to iterator data struct, which gets passed through instead,
but this works for now.

af7db2f8f1 Fix panic on thrown potion of acid when swallowed
When you're swallowed and throw a missile that kills the swallower,
the thrown missile is picked up by the swallower before death.
This caused a panic when you threw a potion, which was first picked up
by the swallower, which upon death dropped the potion on the floor,
but then throw code was trying to destroy the potion ...

6880d37b33 mon_leaving_level
From 6 year old email: m_detach (monster death or removal from play)
and relmon (monster migrating to another level) both take a monster
off the map but they weren't consistent with each other. Change them
to use a common routine for that.

I'm not sure whether the inconsistencies resulted in any bugs. The
email was concerned about handling for monsters that emit light, but
those aren't actually common to the two removal methods and turned
out to be ok.

88a61f1c40 eating food while hiding under it
Fix the bug reported by entrez where you could end up hiding under
nothing if while poly'd into a hides-under creature and hiding under
something edible you ate whatever you were hiding under. Same thing
could happen if it was a corpse on an altar and you offered it rather
than consumed it.

While in there, fix monsters hiding under cockatrice corpses. They
won't do that unless there are multiple objects in the pile, but
there was no check for the possible case of all additional objects
also being other cockatrice corpses.

c6363d74a7 Fix: levitating/flying monsters moving over liquid
Commit c1a6dd4 was meant to prevent flying, levitating, and clinging
monsters from considering walls of water as acceptable movement
destinations, even outside of the Plane of Water. However, it was
evaluating the monster's starting position instead of possible places to
move to, and the evaluation was 'backwards' (the equivalent of
IS_WATERWALL, instead of !IS_WATERWALL).

The result was that non-swimming monsters could only move onto any kind
of water or lava square if the position they were moving from was a
WATER square. Change this so that instead of the starting position,
each potential destination spot's status as a wall of water is evaluated
in turn, and reverse the effect of the test so that it blocks walls of
water instead of allowing them.

77dc522a62 artifact tracking again
Redo the recent artifact creation stuff by replacing several nearly
identical routines with one more general one. Also adds a tracking
bit for one or two more creation methods. That changed artiexist[]
from an array of structs holding 8 or less bits to one holding 9, so
bump EDITLEVEL in case the total size changed.

809232914e more artifact tracking
Move some code that was used to decide whether to call distant_name
or doname into distant_name so that the places which were doing that
don't need to anymore and fewer places can care about whether an
artifact is being found. There were two or three instances of
distant_name maybe being called, based on distance from hero, and
yesterday's artifact livelog change added two or three more and made
all of them override the distance limit for artifacts.

After that change to distant_name, make sure that conditional calls
to it become unconditional--just not displayed for the cases where
!flags.verbose had been excluding them. That way distant_name can
decide whether an item is up close and arrange for xname to find it
if it as an artifact.

Also, implement an old TODO. Wearing the Eyes of the Overworld
extends the distance that an item can be from the hero and still be
considered near anough to be seen "up close" when monsters pick it
up or drop it. The explicit cases were using distu(x,y) <= 5, the
distance of a knight's jump. Each quadrant around the hero is a 2x2
square with the diagonal corner chopped off. The replacement code in
distant_name calculates a value of 6, which is functionally equivalent
since the next value of interest beyond 5 is 8. Wearing the Eyes
(deduced by having Xray vision) extends that threshold an extra step
in addition to overriding blindness and seeing through walls: 15,
a 3x3 square in each quadrant, still with the far diagonal corner (16)
treated as out of range.

f65e652e2e livelog event for finding artifacts
Log artifacts found on the floor, or carried by monsters if hero sees
those monsters do something with them. Shown to player via #chronicle
and included in dumplog.

For most cases, finding is based on having the artifact object be
formatted for display. So walking across one won't notice it if pile
size inhibits showing items at its location, even if the artifact is
on top. Taking stuff out of a container won't notice an artifact if a
subset of the contents chosen by class or BUCX filter doesn't include
it unless player has used ':' to look inside. Seeing an artifact be
picked up by a monster (even if the monster itself is unseen) or being
dropped (possibly upon death) will find an artifact even if beyond the
normal range of having it be treated as seen up close. Random treasure
drop items are excluded since they are placed directly on the floor
rather than going into a dying monster's inventory and then dropped
with its other stuff.

d37fa4138a found_artifact() groundwork
Lay groundwork for generating a log event when finding an artifact
on the floor or carried by a monster. This part should not produce
any change in behavior.

Move g.artidisco[] and g.artiexist[] out of the instance_globals
struct back to local within artifact.c. They are both initialized
at the start of a game (and only used in that file) so don't need
to be part of any bulk reinitialization if restart-instead-of-exit
ever gets implemented.

Convert artiexist[] from an array of booleans to an array of structs
containing a pair of bitfields. artiexist[].exists is a direct
replacement for the boolean; artiexist[].found is new but not put to
any significant use yet. If will be used to suppress the future
found-an-artifact event for cases where a more specific event (like
crowning or divine gift as #offer reward) is already produced.

Remove g.via_naming altogether and add an extra argument to oname()
calls to replace it.

Add an extra argument to artifact_exists() calls.

730f73d1c8 livelog: killing unique monsters
Treat the first kill of any unique monster as a major event (for
inclusion in dumplog). Revival and repeat kill is not major but
can still be seen during the game via the #chronicle command.

Show the minor event more often: in addition to death #1 it was
being shown on death 5, 10, 50, 100, 150, 200, and 250. Add 2, 3,
and 25 to that list.

2bef05bb77 livelog level entry events
Fix up the level descriptions used when logging an "entered new level"
event. Most of the change is for adding an extra argument to calls
to describe_level(). The curses portion is in a big chunk of old code
suppressed by #if 0.

I didn't notice that the level entry events are classified as LL_DEBUG
until all the work was done. This promotes the entry events for the
four Plane of <Element> levels from debug events to major ones instead.
It doesn't do that for the Astral Plane because the entered-the-Astral-
Plane achievement already produces a major event for that. Most other
key level entry events are in a similar situation--or will become that
way once another set of achievements eventually gets added--so there
aren't any other event classification promotions.

1e90f89203 Chronicle of major events, and livelog
Log game events, such as entering a new dungeon level, breaking
a conduct, or killing a unique monster, in a new "Major events"
chronicle. The entries record the turn when the event happened.
The log can be viewed with #chronicle -command, and the entries
also show up in the end-of-game dump, if that is available.

This feature is on by default, but can be disabled by
defining NO_CHRONICLE compile-time option.

This also contains "live logging", writing the events as they
happen into a single livelog-file. This is mostly useful for
public servers. The livelog is off by default, and must be
compiled in with LIVELOG, and then turned on in sysconf.

Mostly this a version of livelogging from the Hardfought server,
with some changes.

4b20ed6211 Fix: gender, historicity of stoned monster statue
The way statues of stoned unique monsters were marked as "historic" was
not changed when mkcorpstat flags were updated in 04a8ddc, resulting in
unique statues which were no longer marked as historic and were instead
marked as female.

While fixing that, also use the gender-related mkcorpstat flags to
assign the gender of a stoned monster to the resulting statue.

90313d443d Magical breathing helps fish survive out of water
The hero in an aquatic polyform loses HP for time spent out of the
water; allow magical breathing to prevent this, just as it allows the
hero in her non-aquatic natural form to breathe underwater.

Also add a similar rule for monster fish-out-of-water HP loss, even
though currently monsters can't use amulets of magical breathing and
there's no non-breathing fish/eel -- just in case this changes at some
point.

d736cbd751 fix github issue #603 - guarding prize items
Reported by Vivit-R with comments by several others. The prize item
in one of the closets off the Sokoban treasure zoo is sometimes
missing, most likely picked up by an elf who won't be dissuaded by
the presence of engraved Elbereth or a scroll of scare monster.

This fix prevents monsters from targetting the mines' and sokoban's
prizes for pickup (or for eating). Once the hero picks either of the
prizes up, they stop being prizes and will be ordinary monster fodder
if dropped/stolen/stashed.

One of the comments by copperwater suggested this approach as a
possible way to fix things. I had already implemented it from scratch
before noticing that. It handles the usual monster behavior toward
items, but there could easily be some unusual cases still susceptible
to taking the prize before the hero gets to it. Those are the breaks.

b242fbce5a Fix: artifacts silently removed from the game
Death drops will generate a random item, which may be an artifact.
After the object is created, some rules are applied to check whether its
size matches the monster that dropped it; if it fails these checks,
the item is deleted. aosdict recently pointed out that if the death
drop was an artifact, this would permanently remove it from the game.

Use artifact_exist(..., FALSE) in various cases where potential
artifact objects are created, then immediately removed. This will
prevent artifacts from being removed from play by marking the artifact
as available to create again.

f855fb5e45 Remove g.monstermoves
It's redundant with g.moves, so there is no more need for it.

Way, way back, it looks like g.moves and g.monstermoves can and did
desync, where g.moves would track the amount of moves the player had
gotten (and would therefore increase faster if the player were hasted)
and g.monstermoves would track the amount of monster move cycles, aka
turns. But this has not been the case for a long time, and they both
increment together in the same location in allmain.c. There are no
longer any cases where they will not be the same value.

This is a save-breaking change because it changes struct
instance_globals, but I have not updated the editlevel in this commit.

e67f45fc5c fix #K3422 - mimic remains as 'strange object'
even when protection from shape changers is in effect. I'm not sure
why mimicking other things doesn't trigger the same sanity check
warning. This fix works for the strange object case and I assume
that it doesn't break the more general case.

When investigating, I noticed that save and restore (even leaving
the level and then returning) causes cancelled shape changers to be
uncancelled. Treat being cancelled similarly to having to having
protection from shape changers in effect: shape changer is forced
to revert to its innate form and not allowed to change shape.

Dead monsters that had traits saved with the corpse would revive as
the same gender, but ordinary corpses revived with random gender so

Since corpses of monsters lacked gender, those for monsters with

This is a fairly big change for a fairly minor problem and needs a

6b60618e0e Exploding spheres cause real explosions
Despite active explosion attacks being called explosions in-game,
they only affected a single target, and were handled differently
from actual explosions. Make them do an actual explosion instead.
This should make spheres more interesting and inspire different
tactics handling them.

Because spheres deal more damage on average and can destroy items
in their explosions, their difficulty has been increased slightly.

Polyselfed hero exploding won't cause elemental damage to their
own gear.

changed (uncomitted)
  char *ns = 0;

I'm a bit surprised that the intermediate form without any
parentheses around 'ns = "bar"' compiles at all. C99? I don't
think that it would have if it had been processed as C90 or pre-ANSI.
