757c51bb3c X11 menus - support pre-selected menu entries
X11 had been ignoring add_menu(..., MENU_SELECTED) to specify a
pre-selected menu entry.  This adds support for that.

Attempt to implement pre-selected entry for PICK_ONE menu sanely by
returning the pre-selected entry instead of toggling it off if the
user chooses it explicitly.   Inner workings of menus are convoluted
so I'm not sure it's 100% correct, although testing hasn't found any
problems.  (tty currently returns 0 for "nothing picked" when
explicitly picking a pre-selected entry in a PICK_ONE menu, and the
core jumps through hoops to handle it.  That can't be cleaned up until
all interfaces which support pre-selected entries achieve sanity.)

Make "random" be chosen for <return> or <enter> during role selection
and highlight it to reflect that.  (Role selection for X11 uses its
own code instead of nethack menus, so pre-selection isn't applicable.)

a309e076e0 X11: Attach translations also to menuform
Without this, the keyboard commands don't work in the extended
command window on Linux. If the translations are removed from
menuformview, then the keyboard commands don't work on Mac.

Having the translations in both doesn't seem to hurt.

0226c904fa X11 menus
Make the six buttons (ok, cancel, all, none, invert, search) on
menus for X11 all have the same width.

'ok' should probably be changed to 'okay' to be consistent with
X11_getlin().  (Another inconsistency:  the extended commands
menu uses 'dismiss' rather than 'cancel'.)

Two cosmetic changes for the X11 version of the getlin() routine:
1) Make the text entry box big enough to hold 60 characters before
   sliding the beginning input off the left edge, instead of just 13,
   so that user can see much more of what is being typed;
2) Make the cancel button be a little wider, and the okay button be
   the same width as the cancel button so they look a little nicer.

06aedee513 X11: Match new extcmd immediately if no match was found
When entering an extended command, allow the user just type
and match a new command immediately, if no match was found,
instead of needing to wait the 2.5 seconds.

6d53aaa6ff more new status - X11 'fancy' status
Update X11's status display to include the expanded set of status
conditions.  This time the order is
 Petrifying   <hunger>       Blind
 Slimed       <encumbrance>  Deaf
 Strangled    Levitating     Stunned
 Food Pois    Flying         Confused
 Term Ill     Riding         Hallucinating
with the application defaults file specifying red text for the first
column and black for the other two.  Previously it was all one column
with seven entries.  [Slimed was missing along with the six new ones
(deaf, stone, strngl, lev, fly, ride) and both types of sickness were
shown as 'FoodPois' or 'Ill' or 'FoodPois Ill' on one line.]

So now basic bot2, #if STATUS_VIA_WINDOWPORT genl_status_update, and
#if !STATUS_VIA_WINDOWPORT X11 fancy status have three different
orderings.  genl_status_update has hunger and encumbrance first
because all the other status conditions are grouped together as one
bitmask item.  bot2 has 'lev', 'fly', 'ride' last so that they're
the first things to be sacrificed if the string of status conditions
ends up being truncated.  (genl_status_update also has those last.)

In addition to updating status conditions, I reordered the Hp, Pw, &c
section too so that it's closer to tty in organization.

I didn't have SCORE_OR_BOTL set so haven't seen the last one, but

c5db7f57a3 X11 extended command menu
Restore the ability to select extended commands by keystroke.
The key translation stuff had gotten attached to the wrong widget.

When using keys to highlight an entry in the extended command menu,
don't reset the key-by-key handling so quickly.  (On second and
subsequent keystrokes, if you waited more than 0.5 second, the new
key started picking an extended command from scratch rather than
continuing the current one, making it pretty hard to disambiguate
commands which have the same initial letter.  Now the delay
threshold is 2.5 seconds.  In theory that should become a user-
preference resource but I don't think it's worth the effort.)

Display the help choice in response to '?'.

Clean up the formatting of the top two buttons (dismiss + help).

Start with a scroll bar if the menu is too big to fit on the screen.
Prior to this, on OSX, the full menu would be constructed but any
of it that was 'displayed' beneath the bottom of the screen was
inaccessible because it couldn't be dragged higher and couldn't be
resized to get a scroll bar (since the way to resize on OSX is by
dragging the bottom right corner--which was off the screen).

The problems I mentioned recently are still present:  when scroll
bar is present, I can click beneath it and it moves down, but
neither dragging it up nor clicking above it will move it back up.
Fortunately the recently implemented up and down arrows both work,
even after clicking/dragging starts failing.

There was a lot of trial and error involved here.  Most of it
eventually got phased out, but the mystery of 'defaultDistance'
(which is reported to be 0 but is actually 4) remains.  The screen
height stuff at the end ought to be fixed up if someone can figure
out how to get the width of a horizontal scroll bar or the height
of a title bar.  (I'm sure I used to know how to do the latter,
but that was 25 or so years ago, and in Fortran with Xlib rather
than Xt or Xaw....)

Update the unix Makefiles and the older OSX hints files to handle the
pile marker tile overlay.  I didn't touch hints/macosx10.10 and .11
since I think there's still a merge for them pending.

A couple of formatting tweaks for bemain.c are included, for no
compelling reason.  What are the odds that anyone will every build
that again?

07e2d6175f X11 icon version numbering
One of the steps in the pre-release checklist:  make sure the version
number in the X11 icons is up to date.  nh32icon and nh56icon both have
the version number (major and minor values only, not patchlevel).
Update it from 3.4 to 3.6 for both.  (nh72icon doesn't have any version
info in its design, so doesn't need any update.)

The X11 'bitmap' program strips out the header comments, so I modified
the image, saved it, used 'git diff --patch' to capture the changes,
'git checkout' to revert to the existing file, and edited in the diff
bands pertaining to the changed data.  No doubt this could have been
done in some easier fashion, but it was victory just to find the bitmap
utility and achieve results using a one-button mouse--worse, a clumsy
touchpad substituting for one--when it's designed for a three-button one.

5df350d548 separate option to toggle hilite_pile
Beta tester report.

The use of use_inverse meant that you couldn't selectively
choose to hilite pets but not piles. Add its own option.

print_glyph now takes a second parameter.

Tiles on tiled ports always looked odd on places like the plane of air
where the background color of the tile didn't match the general background
of the surrounding area.

3.6 made that even worse and more glaringly noticeable with the introduction
of darkened room tiles.

The code to actually send something useful through the new parameter
for window ports to take advantage if they want will follow.

97d6fade74 Reformat all C files.
I'll push a formatting guide at some point. There may still be
outstanding changes, but please feel free to resolve those as you arrive
a them.

To the best of my knowledge, there is no changes to the actual code
content, but the formatter does have the occasional bug. If you run into
an issue, please fix it!

Suppress close to 400 warnings generated by gcc on the win/X11/*.c code,
most due to -Wwrite-strings which makes string literals implicitly have
the 'const' attribute.  (Since modifying a string literal results in
undefined behavior, that is an appropriate check to have enabled, but
it can be troublesome since string literals have type 'char *' and code
that uses them that way is correct provided it avoids modifying them.)

 113  warning: initialization discards qualifiers from pointer target type

The nhStr() hack casts to 'char *', explicitly removing 'const', for
situations where it isn't feasible to make code directly honor const.
The vast marjority of uses are for the second parameter to XtSetArg(),
which is a macro that actually performs an assignment with the second
argument rather than passing it in a function.  It takes values like
'XtNtop', which doesn't need to be altered (although in many places I
changed that to nhStr(XtNtop) for uniformity with the surrounding code,
and 'XtNbottom', which does need to have the extra const stripping to
avoid a warning.  Go figure.

The nhUse() hack actually uses its argument in a meaningless way if the
code is compiled with FORCE_ARG_USAGE defined.  When GCC_WARN is defined,
FORCE_ARG_USAGE will be enabled if it hasn't been already.  Example:

The extra line will expand to ';' when FORCE_ARG_USAGE is not defined
or too
   nhUse_dummy += (unsigned)arg;
when it is.  I figured direct assignment might lead to a different
warning by some compilers in a situation like
   nhUse(arg);
   nhUse(otherarg);
where the first assignment would be clobbered by the second, and using
bitwise operations or safer '+= (arg != 0)' would most likely generate
more non-useful code.  Some tweaking might turn out to be necessary.

6386331148 'I' command support for BUCX
Allow the 'I' command to show inventory of known blessed items via
pseudo object classes B, C, U, and X.  That's instead of an showing
inventory of specific object class.  The two can't be combined
because 'I' operates on single character input.

I had to modify tty_yn_function to prevent it from forcing a BUCX
character into lower case (simply using lower case would cause a
conflict with 'u' and 'x' for inventory of shopping bill), and did
that by checking whether any of the acceptable response characters
are upper case.  Pretty straightforward and shouldn't impact any
other uses that don't specify upper case choices.

I did the same thing for X11.  Other interfaces most likely need
to do something similar.  If they don't, a response of 'B' or 'C'
(for menustyle:traditional or menustyle:combination) will simply
not work, without causing any problems, same as typing an invalid
choice, and 'U' or 'X' will give shop feedback instead of the
requested subset of inventory.

The Guidebook revisions are untested.

8b9ce73c31 revised menu searching
Convert search in tty menus from pmatch to case-insensitive pmatchi;
convert search in X11 menus from substring strstri to wildcard pmatchi.

tty bug:  if the menu is full screen, the search prompt and subsequent
user input clobbers the menu header.

d3205d98d6 X11 menu hack for ':'
Same functionality as was recently implemented for tty.  If a
character like ':' is an explicit menu selector and the player
types it, select that menu entry rather than treating it as a
search request.  (Same for other menu commands like '>', but
offhand I can't think of anything besides container looting's
': - look inside' that uses any non-letter selectors other
than '$', which isn't used as a menu meta command.)

1edadd1d48 Make REINCARNATION unconditional.
There is a lot of code affected by this, and Pat Rankin correctly
observes that it would be better to store roguelike as a level flag
rather than just using Is_rogue_level. A note for the future.

a871ad06e9 outrip() updating (trunk only)
Part II of the bones tracking patch.  Change umpteen different outrip()
routines to handle its new time_t argument, and use formatkiller() instead
of directly accessing killer.{format,name} and killed_by_prefix[].  The
latter is now static within formatkiller().

     The many sys/* and win/* changes are untested....

Remove date.h and patchlevel.h from win/tty/wintty.c, win/X11/winX.c,
and sys/share/pcmain.c (caveat: the latter two are untested) so that they
don't get recompiled every time any other source file changes and triggers
creation of a new date.h.  Only version.c needs to be recompiled in that
situation.  Also, Makefile.src was missing a reference to botl.h.

c119e8c3d9 add param to ini winsys routines
Provide a mechanism for cleanly moving between tentative window system
selections during startup.  Now, before a second (or later) system is selected,
the first will be notified that it is losing control.  See window.doc.

4e5e720334 display version and build info at startup (trunk only)
Tested on the unix port; I've updated as many other ports as I can figure
out but they're not tested.  See window.doc for info on the changed banner
lines.  Also adds the ability to override the generic "Unix" port - used now to get
"MacOSX" into the version line instead of "Unix" (so we don't scare people who don't
know what's going on).

f6e40b8bf8 have core ask windowport if suspend is ok
PORTS: Please make sure I've done the right thing for/to your code.
This patch adds a new winproc that lets the window port approve or cancel
the suspend request - this should take care of the Mac Qt lockup issue.
In addition, Unix suspend is restricted to accounts that can use the shell
if SYSCF is defined.

59e64a1d40 First pass at a hints-based build system to augment (not replace) the existing
build system.

Anyone who wants to do a build from sys/unix and doesn't want to figure this
out just needs to do:
	sh setup.sh hints/unix
instead of:
	sh setup.sh
and then continue on as usual.

New files:
sys/unix/NewInstall.unx - the new directions
sys/unix/hints/* - the hints files.  There will be more later.
sys/unix/mkmkfile.sh - helper for setup.sh

Summary of changes:
see NewInstall.unx for info on the new build system
introduction of various preprocessor symbols to turn options off that
 are defaulted on historically
comment out nethackrc (and similar) entries that still use the old symbol
 syntax.
commenting out of Makefile.* lines that now come from hints/unix
GAMEDIR is replaced with HACKDIR so the Makefiles and the C source agree.
  Note that I have NOT changed the docs and/or Makefiles for be, msdos, os2,
  vms, or winnt.  If port maintainers don't then I will, but I can't test
  those ports.
nethack.sh now handles the font path automatically

Explicitly truncate the query prompt string to QBUFSZ-1 characters.
For tty and Amiga, no longer include the choices and default within that
length limit; use a bigger buffer to hold them along with the prompt.

8fc01eb6b1 window port change - putmixed() (trunk only)
Add putmixed() to the window port. It allows map symbols to
be included in the string by encoding them in a unique fashion.
This was done because Unicode symbols, for instance, could be
longer than the size of a char.

The encoding of the map symbols in this patch is done by
prefixing a glyph value with \GXXXX, where XXXX is a
random value for the current game. The reason for the random
prefix is to minimize the possibility that a player can trigger
the escape sequence processing within text under their control
(dog names, etc.) the way they could if the sequence was fixed
in the source code. The random prefix remains the same throughout
the lifetime of a game because message window strings are
saved in the save file.

(There was actually a bug present because of the embedded
character even before the recent symbol changes, because if
someone was using a  different set of characters between games,
the saved messages would reflect the original characters, rather
than the current. That bug was introduced with the ability to
save messages to the savefile.)

A window port does not have to supply an XXX_putmixed() routine,
it can use genl_putmixed() which uses the old behavior of
embedding the sequence as a character within the string
and calling putstr(). genl_putmixed() takes care of the decoding
of the escape sequence.

This also #ifdef's out code in pager.c for converting a glyph
to a character, and uses mapglyph() to do that instead. Does
anyone see a problem with doing that through mapglyph instead
of repeating similar code within pager.c?

374e9fbbb4 more symbol stuff (trunk only)
- reduce the number of symbol tables for each graphics
set {PRIMARY, ROGUESET} from three {map, oc, mon}
tables for each of the display symbols, the loadable symbols,
and the rogue symbols, to one continguous table for
each:
showsyms: the current display symbols
l_syms: the loaded, alterable symbols
r_syms: the rogue symbols

- Modify mapglyph so that the index into the symbolt table is
available as a return value (it was a void function), rather than
just the char converted from the glyph.
- That makes it possible for a window port to use the same
index value to extract from another table (perhaps a unicode
table) for a different set of display symbols. The  index
is much more useful than trying to convert the character
into another type of symbol, as some contributed patches
have done.
- It is much easier to load a single alternative flat table to
make substitutions, since the corresponding value just
has to get placed into the same index offset in the
alternative table.

This also fixes a bug I found in botl.c, where you could
go to the rogue level, and the bottom line gold symbol
was not being updated with the new character as it should.
The reason was because the gold value had not changed,
only the field symbol used had changed.

This updates multiple ports to place a (void) cast on
the mapglyph call, now that it returns a value, so this
is going to generate a lot of diff e-mails.

From a bug report:  fix a typo for mouse
position handling in set_button_values().  I have no way to test this,
nor can I tell whether it could have ever impacted anyone.  The old code
clearly had a mistake and the fix is obvious.

a6bff50803 X11 map scrolling behavior [from Steve VanDevender]
This isn't really a bug, but I find it does make the map scrolling in
the generic X11 version a lot less distracting.  The original behavior
produces certain boundaries where, when the cursor moves back and forth
across that boundary, the map scrolls with each crossing.  This is
particularly annoying in places like Sokoban where the player makes that
kind of movement frequently causing large jumps of the map each time.
Changing the border and delta constants in winmap.c as below eliminates
that behavior, as well as making the cursor easier to track by tending
to recenter it whenever the map shifts.

4c9d161953 missing scrollbar in X11_display_file [from Steve VanDevender]
It appears that the Athena text widget in recent XFree86 distributions
does not properly honor the XawtextScrollWhenNeeded flag, so the text
widget created by X11_display_file() does not have a vertical scroll bar
when the text does not entirely fit in the window.  I have seen this bug
in XFree86 versions from 4.0.2 through 4.3.0.  Using XawtextScrollAlways
for the vertical scrollbar ensures it will always appear.

10480f4397 core support for status field highlighting (trunk only)
This provides the core support needed for status field highlighting.
This patch doesn't actually perform status field highlighting for any port,
but provides the core hooks for doing so.

The syntax is:
OPTIONS=hilite_status:{fieldname}/{threshold}/{below}/{above}
where {fieldname} is the name of a status field.
           {threshold} is the value used as the threshold to trigger a display
                             change.  It can also be set to "updown" to trigger
                             a display change whenever it rises or whenever it falls.
                             If you end the threshold value with %, then it signifies
                             that you want to trigger the display change based on the
                             percentage of maximum.
         {below}, {above}
                        are the color or display attribute that you want to use when
                        the field value is underneath the threshold. Supported display
                        fields are:  normal, inverse, bold, black, red, green,
                                         brown, blue, magenta, cyan, gray, orange,
                                         bright-green, yellow, bright-blue, bright-magenta,
                                         bright-cyan, or white.
Valid field names are:
        alignment, armor-class, carrying-capacity,
        charisma, condition, constitution, dexterity,
        dungeon-level, experience-level, experience,
        gold, HD, hitpoints-max, hitpoints, hunger,
        intelligence, power-max, power, score,
        strength, time, title, wisdom

Refer to window.doc for details. Guidebook updates to come later.
