This is the third of a series of savefile-related changes.
This adds early-days experimental support for a completely optional
'sfctool' utility (savefile conversion tool), to be able to export
a savefile's contents into a more portable format. There are likely
to be bugs at this stage. In this initial first-attempt, the export
format is a very simple ascii output.
NetHack can be built entirely, without also building this tool.
NetHack has no dependencies on the tool.
Attempts were made to minimize duplication of existing NetHack code.
To achieve that, unfortunately, #ifdef SFCTOOL and #ifndef SFCTOOL
had to be sprinkled around through some of the existing NetHack
source code, so that it could be re-used for building the utility.
The process for building the sfctool typically recompiles the source
files with #define SFCTOOL and a distinct object file with SF- is
produced.
sfctool notes:
Universal ctags is used and required to produce the sfctool utility.
Some targets were added to the Unix and Windows Makefiles to
facilitate the build process.

That should build a copy in util.
Note: At present, the Unix Makefiles do not copy sfctool over to the
NetHack playground during 'make install' or 'make update'.
Until that gets resolved by someone, The tool will
have to be manually copied there by the builder/admin if
desired.

Also, a separate Visual Studio sfctool.sln solution was written and
placed in sys/windows/vs. That has has only very limited testing.
Usage:
i) To convert an existing savefile to an exportascii format
that co-resides with the savefile:
sfctool -c savefile
That *must* be executed on the same platform / architecture /
data model that produced the save file in the first place.
ii) To unconvert an existing exportascii format export file to a
historical format savefile that can then be used by NetHack:
sfctool -u savefile
That must be executed on the same target platform / architecture /
data model that was used to build the NetHack that will
utilize the save file that results.
A Windows example:

That should result in creation of Fred.NetHack-saved-game.exportascii
from existing savefile:

This is the second of a series of changes related to save/restore.
No EDITLEVEL bump has been included, because although the code
is changed extensively by this, the content of the savefiles have
not been changed.
Push the use of the structlevel bwrite() and mread() function use
out of the core and into sfstruct.c. This is groundwork for upcoming
changes.
In the core, replace the bwrite() and mread() calls with the
use of type-specific savefile output (Sfo) and savefile
input (Sfi) macros. The macros are defined in a new header file
savefile.h, which also contains the prototypes for the sfo_* and
sfi_* functions that the macros ultimately expand to. The functions
themselves are in src/sfbase.c.
On C99, each Sfo or Sfi macro expansion refers directly to the
corresponding type-specific sfo_* or sfi_* function.
If C23 or later is is use, the majority (all but 3 types) of the
macros refer to a single _Generic output routine sfo(nhfp, dt, tag),
and a single _Generic input routine sfi(nhfp, dt, tag), which handles
the dispatch of the type-specific underlying functions. This was
somewhat experimental, but turned out to be practical because the
compiler would gripe if the type for a variable was not included in
the _Generic when passed as an argument, so it could be fixed.
This alters the savefile verication process by having a common set
return values for the related functions such as uptodate(),
check_version(), etc. The new return values return more information
about savefile incompatibilities, beyond failure/sucess. The
additional information will be useful for an upcoming addition.

The callers in the core have been adjusted to deal with the expanded
return values.
Other miscellaneous inclusions:
- go.oracle_loc -> svo.oracle_loc.
- add a bit (1UL << 30) to called SFCTOOL_BIT as groundwork
for changes to follow.
This is the first of several savefile-related changes to
follow later. This one is groundwork for those later changes.
Remove internal compression schemes (RLECOMP and ZEROCOMP)
and discard the savefile_info struct that was primarily used to
convey which internal compression schemes had been in use.
Relocate some struct definitions into appropriate header files
for use by code to come in later changes.
Remove the two struct size-related fields from version_info and
from the nmakedefs_s. Instead, include a series of bytes near the
beginning of the savefile, representing the size of each
struct or base data type that impacts the historical savefile
content. Those are referred to as the "critical bytes".
(Related note: the "you" struct required two bytes, low and high,
due to its size).
Compare those critical bytes in a savefile against the NetHack
build that is reading the savefile. This allows mismatch detection
early in the savefile-reading process, and a clean exit, rather than
proceeding to read nonsensical values from the file. Include some
feedback on what the first mismatch was when encountering
one.
For arrays stored in the savefile, use loop-logic in the core
to write/read the array elements one at a time, rather than in
a single blob. This will be required for changes to follow later.

This also adds data model to the long version information.
This invalidates existing save and bones files due to the changes in
the information at the start of the file.

There was a transcription error in the comments in cstd.h for
the standard list of header files, where only the description
remained for <stdlib.h>, not the name of the file itself.
Remove several extraneous inclusions of the standard C99 headers.

The role, race, gender, and alignment string values are 3 letters
preceded by a dash. I was looking at "name-race-role-gend-algn"
and mistakenly treated them as 4 letters preceded by a dash.
Fixing that changes PL_NSIZ_PLUS and there is one item of that size
written into save files, so the fix invalidates existing save files.

when any game in the list wasn't saved during normal play. (Those
are sorted by character name; the playmode is just coincidence.)
The dash for 'normal' doesn't look great but -/X/D are codes used in
entries written to paniclog. The whole playmode prefix doesn't look
particularly good but I suspect that most players relying on restore
via menu won't see it.
It should work when the character name has dashes in it but that
hasn't been properly tested.
The gender and alignment suffices reflect their value at the time of
save rather than at the start of the game. That might be considered
a bug but it was easiest.
Increments EDITLEVEL; existing save and bones files are invalidated.

Also, this attempts to fulfill a wish-list item by paxed, to
allow naming colors in symbols file by name as an alternative
to using r-g-b values. The basic color names as well as html
color names are supported.
The old default allocation of space for 120 doors on a level seems
excessive. Reduce that to 20. Code for expanding the allocation
when needed is already in place.

This implements the mechanics to use the ctrl_nhwindow() interface
capability to pass down a setting change from the core to the active
window port, without resorting to accessing a core global variable
from within the window port, and without altering the interface..
The passed setting is honored in the tty and curses window ports.
X11 and mswin receive and store the values, but no implementation
to change the menu prompt style is there yet.
Qt does not store the values or have an implementation.
The setting change is done in allmain.c immediately after
creating the WIN_INVEN window.

Xarch.h has an #ifdef SVR4 block.
When the address sanitizer is in use for gcc, clang, or visual studio,
(-fsanitize=address) define the NetHack preprocessor symbol USING_ADDRESS_SANITIZER.
Also includes support by paxed for polearm targeting using the
frame color.
Also renames USE_TILES to TILES_IN_GLYPHMAP which is a more
accurate description.
Not all window interfaces have full support for the color framing
of the background square yet.
MS-DOS needs further work (to bring it to both VESA and VGA, with
and without tiles.
Windows GUI is missing support.
X11 and Qt have been started, but may require further refinement.
The consolidation of global variables from scattered source
files into decl.c and declared in decl.h was begun in 3.7.0.
Their placement in common files was done for centralized
initialization and potential re-initialization during a
"play again" scenario.
It wasn't really necessary for all of them to be housed in a
single huge structure to meet the "play again" requirement,
and the single huge structure has been a little unwieldy when
it comes to maintenance.
Following this commit, instead of one single extremely large structure
named 'g' to house all of the relocated global variables, they
are distributed into several ga through gz.
To make things easy for the developer, each variable is placed
into the struct corresponding to the starting letter of the variable.
That way, no lookup is required in order to know which struct houses
a particular variable, it is a simple match to the starting letter
for all the centralized global variables.

Write up a description of how the command line works on UNIX and put
that in new file dat/usagehlp. Add support for
|nethack --usage | --help | -? | ?
to display it and exit.
Also add a menu entry for nethack's help command to show it during
play. That can be suppressed by uncommenting new '#define HIDE_USAGE'
in config.h since it won't be useful on servers that don't give
players access to command lines.
New genl_display_file() just writes to stdout. opt_usage(), which
calls it, might need some suid/sgid handling to make sure the output
is done as the player rather than as nethack.
doc/nethack.6 is already out of date again.
Mark alloc()--also dupstr() and re_alloc()--for gcc and clang as
always returning non-Null. This should silence some of the static
analysis complaints.
Almost all the monster and object naming functions (anything that
returns an mbuf or an obuf) should be marked this way too but I'll
leave that for somebody else to deal with.
I didn't attempt to mark alloc() with the 'malloc' attribute because
macro definitions could end up causing trouble. Specifying its
deallocator would probably be useful but is at even bigger risk of
macro interference.
I'm not sure whether gcc 3 is really the right test for whether the
returns_nonnull attribute setting is available.
viz_array[][] is indexed by coordinates but the data it contains has
nothing to do with them so it shouldn't have been changed to coordxy.
'char' was sufficient; 'uchar' would have been better; this invents
'seenV' instead. This led to a cascade of required changes. The
result is warning free and seems to be working but my fingers are
crosssed....
One of the drivers of this change was that screen coordinates require a
type that can hold values greater than 127. Parameters to the window
port routines require a large type in order to be able to have values
a fair bit larger than COLNO and ROWNO passed to them, particularly for
their use to the right of the map window.
This splits the uses of xchar into 3 different situations, and adjusts
their type and size:

xint16: Same data size as coordxy, but for non-coordinate use (16-bits).
xint8: There are only a few use cases initially, where it was very
plain to see that the variable could remain as 8-bits, rather
than be bumped to 16-bits. There are probably more such cases
that could be changed after additional review.
Note: This first changed all xchar variables to coordxy. Some were
reviewed and got changed to xint16 or xint8 when it became apparent that
their usage was not for coordinates.
This increments EDITLEVEL in patchlevel.h
Add new routine 're_alloc()' that functions as MONITOR_HEAP-aware
libc realloc(). 'nhrealloc()' is the version that passes source
file and line info if built with MONITOR_HEAP enabled. The heaplog
data might now contain '<' (freed by realloc), '>' (replacement
allocation by realloc), and '*' (resized by realloc) entries in
addition to the previous '+' (allocated) and '-' (freed) entries.
heaputil has already been updated in the NHinternal repository.
Move FITSint_() and FITSuint_() from hacklib.c to alloc.c so that
they can be accessed by miscellaneous utility programs.
Remove three or four copies of FITSint_() that were duplicated in
utility programs like dlb and tile2bmp due to those not having
access to src/hacklib.o. They do have access to src/alloc.o (and
util/panic.o).
Change table format to handle functions never to be included.
Clean up bit masks and tables of functions.
Remove some old comments and out-of-date code.
This is enough to prevent abuse by denying access to functions and
denial of service (RAM and instruction step limits), but not enough
to allow restricted use of things that require finer control (e.g.
filesystem access).
If something goes wrong, the whole thing can be turned off, for
now, in config.h (see NHL_SANDBOX).
None of the current functionality requires changes to build systems;
some of the possible future functionality may require some #defines
- TBD. There is lots of dead code (#ifdef notyet) for bits of that
additional functionality; we can rip it out if we don't want those
additions or we can complete (parts of) it depending on our needs.
All current uses of Lua are connected to sandboxes and guarded with
nhl_pcall (sandbox and lua_pcall wrapper); options and limits can
be set at the callsites in the passed nhl_sandbox_info. Some of
the error handling may be wrong - panic() vs. impossible() vs
silence.
Memory and instruction step limits should be tuned prior to release;
there's no point tuning them now.
Requested by k21971 (hardfought admin): classify the gameover event
as something other than achievement so that live-logging can exclude
it in order to use the xlogfile end-of-game entry instead.
It had been classified as an achievement because that was the only
category being treated as 'major' so written to final dumplog. Give
is a new classification 'dump' which is distinct from achievement
and intended to explicitly request that an event go into dumplog.
The gameover event is the only one in that category, at least for now.
Add a bunch of other classifications besides achievement and dump to
be treated as 'major' for dumplog. The new list is
wish, achieve, umonst (death of unique monster), divinegift,
lifesave (via amulet, not explore-/wizard-mode decline to die),
artifact, genocide, dump
and may still need further tuning. Currently excluded are
conduct (first violation of any conduct), killedpet, alignment
(changed, either via helmet or conversion), minorac (minor
achievement such as level gain or entering the mines), and spoiler
(currently only applies to finding Mines' End luckstone which is
also 'achieve' so will be in dumplog).
This doesn't remove the reference to unimplemented LLC_TURNS that is
mentioned in the template sysconf.

Reported by k21971, the dumplog section labeled "major events" showed
all logged events rather than just the ones classified as major.
Filter out the non-major ones when writing dumplog.
At the moment only a couple of ones other than achievements are major.
Probably various other types should be too.
The #chronicle command still lists all logged events unless they're
flagged as 'spoiler'. So far the mines' end luckstone is the only
one flagged that way. Unfortunately a player with access to live
logging could still learn whether or not the gray stone that has just
been picked up on the last mines level is the target luckstone by
viewing the log from outside of the game.
The #chronicle command would be more useful if it gathered all the
categories of events present and put up a menu allowing the player to
choose which ones to view. I haven't attempted to implement that.

Log game events, such as entering a new dungeon level, breaking
a conduct, or killing a unique monster, in a new "Major events"
chronicle. The entries record the turn when the event happened.
The log can be viewed with #chronicle -command, and the entries
also show up in the end-of-game dump, if that is available.
This feature is on by default, but can be disabled by
defining NO_CHRONICLE compile-time option.
This also contains "live logging", writing the events as they
happen into a single livelog-file. This is mostly useful for
public servers. The livelog is off by default, and must be
compiled in with LIVELOG, and then turned on in sysconf.
Mostly this a version of livelogging from the Hardfought server,
with some changes.
The tilemap change provides three variables that used to be
uppercase compile macros in the past, and Amiga (and other ports?) used
them.
The other change just uncomments the header file include.
Move the help text for the 'O' command from the code into its own file
and allow that to be accessed from the '?' menu as well as by choosing
entry '?' in the 'O' menu.
sys/unix/Makefile.top has been updated to handle new 'optmenu', others
need to catch up. The game will still build and run without the file
but asking for options menu help won't work until they do.
Solve the uneven distribution situation that has been present for
picking random rumors for a long time and for random engravings,
epitaphs, and hallucinatory monster names since 3.6.0. This relies
on the previous partial solution where short lines have been padded
to a longer length. When that length is N and random seek lands in
a long line of length L, retry if the position is in the first L-N
characters. Put differently, it if takes more than N characters to
reach the next newline, reject that random seek and try again. This
effectively makes long lines behave as if they had the same length
of N as the short lines have been padded to and when all lines are
the same length, all entries have the same chance to be chosen.
The walls for the mines, gehennom, knox, and sokoban had been
changed at the "tile"-level, with no awareness of the core game,
or non-tile interfaces.
- Expand the glyphs to include a set of walls for the main level
as well as each of those mentioned above.
Altars had been adjusted at the map_glyphinfo() level to substitute
some color variations on-the-fly for unaligned, chaotic, neutral,
lawful altars, and shrines. The tile interface had no awareness of
the feature.
- Expand the glyphs to include each of the altar variations that
had been implemented in the display code for tty-only. This required
the addition of four placeholder tiles in other.txt. Someone with
artistic skill will hopefully alter the additional tiles to better
reflect their intended purpose.
Explosions had unique tiles in the tile window port, and the display
code for tty tinkered with the colors, but the game had very little
awareness of the different types of explosions.
- Expand the glyphs to include each of the explosion types: dark,
noxious, muddy, wet, magical, fiery and frosty.
Pile-markers to represent a pile had been introduced at the
display-level, without little to no awareness by the core game.
- Expand the glyphs to include piletops, including objects,
bodys, and statues.
Recently male and female variations of tiles and monsters had been
had been introduced, but the mechanics had been mostly done at the
display-level through a marker flag. The window port interface then
had to increment the tile mapped to the glyph to get the female version
of the tile.
- Expand the glyphs to include the male and female versions of the
monsters, and their corresponding pet versions, ridden, detected
versions and statues of them.
Direct references to GLYPH_BODY_OFF and GLYPH_STATUE_OFF
in object_from_map() in pager.c were getting incomplete results.
- Add macros glyph_to_body_corpsenm(glyph) and
glyph_to_statue_corpsenm(glyph) macros for obtaining the corpsenm
value after passing the glyph_is_body() or glyph_is_statue() test.
Other relevant notes:
- The tile ordering in the win/share/*.txt tile files has been altered,
other.txt in particular.
- tilemap.c has had a lot of alterations to accommodate the expanded
glyphs. Output that is useful for troubleshooting will end up in
tilemappings.lst if OBTAIN_TILEMAP is defined during build.
It lists all of the glyphs and which tile it gets mapped to, and also
lists each tile and some of the references to it by various glyphs.
- An array glyphmap[MAXGLYPH] is now used. It has an entry for each
glyph, ordered by glyph, and once reset_glyphs(glyph) has been run, it
contains the mapped symindex, default color, glyphflags, and tile
index.
If USE_TILES is defined during build, the tile.c produced from the
tilemap utility populates the tileidx field of each array element with
a glyph-to-tile mapping for the glyph. Later on, when reset_glyphmap()
is run, the other fields of each element will get populated.
- The glyph-to-tile mapping is an added field available to a window
port via the glyphinfo struct passed in the documented interface. The
old glyph2tile[] array is gone. The various active window ports that
had been using glyph2tile[] have been updated to use the new interface
mechanism. Disclaimer: There may be some bug fixing or tidying
required in the window port code.
- reset_glyphmap() is called after config file options parsing
has finished, because some config file settings can impact the results
produced by reset_glyphmap().
- Everything that passes the glyph_is_cmap(glyph) test must
return a valid cmap value from glyph_to_cmap(glyph).
- An 'extern glyph_info glyphmap[MAX_GLYPH];' is inserted into the
top of only the files which need awareness of it, not inserted into
display.h. Presently, the only files that actually need to directly
reference the glyphmap[] array are display.c, o_init.c (for shuffling
the tiles), and the generated tile.c (if USE_TILES is defined).
- Added an MG_MALE glyphflag to complement the MG_FEMALE glyphflag.
- Provide an array for wall colorizations. reset_glyphmap() will draw
the colors from this array: int array wallcolors[sokoban_walls + 1];
The indices of the wallcolors array are main_walls (0), mines_walls
(1), gehennom_walls (2), knox_walls (3), and sokoban_walls (4).
In future, a config file option for adjusting the wall colors and/or
an 'O' option menu to do the same could be added. Right now, the
initializaton of the wallcolors[] array entries in display.c leaves the
walls at CLR_GRAY, matching the defsym color.
- Most of the display-level kludges for some of the on-the-fly
interface features have been removed from map_glyphinfo() as they
aren't needed any longer. These glyph expansions adhere more closely to
the original glyph mechanics of the game.
- Because the glyphs are re-ordered and expanded, an update to
editlevel will be required upon merge of these changes.
This evolves and hopefully eases the game-build requirements by
removing game-compile dependencies on any header files generated
by the makedefs utility, including:
date.h dependency and its inclusion is removed and comparable functionality
is produced at runtime via new file src/date.c.
pm.h dependency and its inclusion is removed and comparable functionality is
produced by moving the monster definitions from monst.c into new header
file called monsters.h and altering them slightly. The former pm.h header
file #define PM_ values are now replaced with appropriate emitted enum
entries during the compiler preprocessing.
onames.h dependency and its inclusion is removed and comparable functionality
is produced by moving the object definitions from objects.c into new header
file called objects.h and altering them slightly. The former onames.h header

artilist.h has been slightly altered, and the former onames.h artifact-related
header file #define ART_ values are now replaced with appropriate emitted enum
entries during the compiler preprocessing.
makedefs can still produce date.h (makedefs -v), pm.h (makedefs -p), and
onames.h (makedefs -o) for reference purposes. They won't be used during
the compiler.
The other uses for makedefs remain. They are used to prepare external
file content that the game utilizes, not prerequisite code for the
compile:
makedefs -d (database)
makedefs -r (rumors)
makedefs -h (oracles)
makedefs -s (epitaphs, engravings, bogusmons)
date.c
Pull the code for date/time stamping from mdlib.c into date.c.
Set date.o to be dependent on source files, header files, and .o files
so that date.o is rebuilt from date.c when any of those changes, thus
ensuring an accurate date/time stamp. It also includes git sha
functionality formerly done by makedefs writing #define directives
into include/date.h. For unix it passes the git info on
the compile line for date.c (via sys/unix/hints/linux.2020, macOS.2020)
nethack --dumpenums (optional, but on by default)
Allow developer to obtain some internal enum values from NetHack
without having to resort to an external utility such as
makedefs.
Uncomment #define NODUMPENUMS in config.h to disable this.
The updates to sys/windows/Makefile.gcc have not been tested yet.
