underneath gets boiled away
Pull request by disperse: when a water walking hero zaps a wand of
fire downward and it boils away the water, hero should fall into the
resulting pit.
The PR commit didn't handle monsters (who don't zap wands downward
but could be on/in water that's boiled out from under them). And
while testing it I noticed that the existing code had message
sequencing issues (being enveloped in a cloud of steam before seeing
the water evaporate). This ended up redoing the fix rather than
using the commit.

If any part of a long worm is within a posion gas cloud region,
include it just once no matter how many segments are inside. The
tail will take harm from poison gas, but only once rather than for
repeated for every segment inside the region.
Unlike with detection, show long worm tail if hero is adjacent to
it in a gas cloud region and would see that tail segment if the
region wasn't inhibiting visibility.
Reported directly to dev-team: vapor cloud dissipation didn't always
update vision properly.
Region removal affecting visibility needs to make two passes, the
first unblocking all no longer blocked spots, then the second deciding
whether spots are visible.
Attempting to do that in one pass was doing

and the cansee <x1,y1> test wasn't accurate if <x2,y2> blocked it and
hadn't been unblocked yet.
Testing with steam didn't seem to trigger the problem but with poison
vapor trail from green dragon breath did. The order of evaporation
mattered too; sometimes the single pass unblocking plus vision-testing
worked ok by coincidence.
I was working on this at the time 3.6.0 was released and set it aside
until later. Later has finally arrived. Redo the Blind, Blinded,
Blindfolded,&c macros to make more complete use of intrinsic property
handling. Blinded was being treated as a number which could be added
to or subtracted from; now that has to be done via TIMEOUT mask
because it has FROMOUTSIDE (OPTIONS:blind) and FROMFORM (poly'd into
!haseyes() form) bits included. Object definitions for blindfold and
towel now specify the BLINDED property; overriding blindness via the
Eyes of the Overworld is accomplished via props[BLINDED].blocked.
Code generated for the scores of Blind and !Blind tests throughout
the program should be smaller.
One bug that has been fixed is that putting on the Eyes of the
Overworld cured permanent blindness (from OPTIONS:blind). The
u.uroleplay.blind flag was cleared and stayed so after taking them
off. Putting the Eyes on still breaks blind-from-birth conduct but
now blindness will resume when they are removed.
This was untested at the time it was set aside and is only lightly
tested now. A large number of the changes here are just to switch
from Blinded to BlindedTimeout for current timed value and to call
set_itimeout() for setting a new value.
The consolidation of global variables from scattered source
files into decl.c and declared in decl.h was begun in 3.7.0.
Their placement in common files was done for centralized
initialization and potential re-initialization during a
"play again" scenario.
It wasn't really necessary for all of them to be housed in a
single huge structure to meet the "play again" requirement,
and the single huge structure has been a little unwieldy when
it comes to maintenance.
Following this commit, instead of one single extremely large structure
named 'g' to house all of the relocated global variables, they
are distributed into several ga through gz.
To make things easy for the developer, each variable is placed
into the struct corresponding to the starting letter of the variable.
That way, no lookup is required in order to know which struct houses
a particular variable, it is a simple match to the starting letter
for all the centralized global variables.
A global variable named 'amulets', would be found in ga.

You can create steam clouds that are gray and deal 0 damage when zapping
fire at or over water sources. If you happen to be in the cloud, it
produced the "You are enveloped in a cloud of noxious gas!" line, and
steam isn't noxious.
Other uses of "gas cloud" could have potentially been changed, but I
left them alone.
One of the drivers of this change was that screen coordinates require a
type that can hold values greater than 127. Parameters to the window
port routines require a large type in order to be able to have values
a fair bit larger than COLNO and ROWNO passed to them, particularly for
their use to the right of the map window.
This splits the uses of xchar into 3 different situations, and adjusts
their type and size:

coordxy: Actual x or y coordinates for various things (moved to 16-bits).
xint16: Same data size as coordxy, but for non-coordinate use (16-bits).
xint8: There are only a few use cases initially, where it was very
plain to see that the variable could remain as 8-bits, rather
than be bumped to 16-bits. There are probably more such cases
that could be changed after additional review.
Note: This first changed all xchar variables to coordxy. Some were
reviewed and got changed to xint16 or xint8 when it became apparent that
their usage was not for coordinates.
This increments EDITLEVEL in patchlevel.h
... you will also get a message when a seen stinking cloud
or the one surrounding the hero dissipates.

When shortening/splitting wide lines I noticed that the save and
restore code for regions had a bunch of those and they could be
shortened by using an intermediate variable. Easier to read too.
Also, change several 'unsigned int' to just 'unsigned' as is used in
most of the rest of the code.
At one point I omitted a (genericptr_t) cast (which should no longer
be necessary...) and discovered that bwrite() wasn't declaring the
input buffer it never modifies as 'const'.
Indent all labels one space. Having uniform placement makes spotting
them much easier. (Having no indent at all would impact the change
bars of 'git diff'. Those display the last unindented line--which
doesn't start with punctuation--occuring before each band of changes,
so usually the name of the function being changed now that we no
longer have unindented K&R-style function argument declarations.)
While in there, shorten or split various wide lines and replace a few
tabs with spaces.
The gas will expand from its chosen center point via breadth-first
search instead of hardcoding a diagonal shape. The search is performed
with a randomized list of directions, and has 50% chance of not spreading
to a space it otherwise would have spread to. This has the effect of fuzzing
the cloud edges in open areas, helping the clouds on, for instance,
the Plane of Fire not be big rhombuses.

If monsters see you resist something, generally elemental or magical
attack, or if they see you reflect an attack, they learn that and
will adjust their attack accordingly.

This adds a superset of the code from github pull request #328
to create a short-lived cloud of steam when fire hits a pool or
fountain. The original code required C99; this doesn't. It also
allowed vapor clouds on the Plane of Water where they don't work
sanely becaure regions don't understand air bubble movement and/or
vice versa. This inhibits the clouds there [the same ought to be
done for scrolls of stinking cloud]. It also left as-is the code
that reported when fountains got used up even though conceptually
the steam should interfere with being able to see that. This adds
a glyph-check hack to augment cansee() so that fountains that boil
away entirely are hidden at the time.
Regions that block line of slight should be calling block_point()
when created and unblock_point() when removed but a naive attempt
to introduce that didn't work as expected so I'm giving up on.

Make wearing a wet towel confer new attribute Half_gas_damage in
addition to the usual blindness. It reduces damage from being inside
a gas cloud region and from being hit by poison gas breath attack.
It also fully blocks breathing of potion vapors.
Might make the Plane of Fire easier although overcoming its blindness
with telepathy won't reveal elementals. Definitely has the potential
to make blind-from-birth conduct easier which wasn't the intent and
probably isn't significant.
remove_region() calls newsym() when removing gas clouds, but when
newsym() checked whether it was updating a gas cloud location it
always got a false 'yes' because the region hadn't been removed yet.
Fixing this didn't seem to make any observable difference so it must
be followed fairly rapidly by a full vision recalc.
Region processing does a lot of looping--when there are actually
regions present--and calls functions in those loops which do more
looping of their own. This moves some of the simpler tests so that
they get done sooner and can avoid some of those function calls.
I was hoping that it would speed up the turn cycle on the Plane of
Fire where the spontaneous irregularly shaped fumaroles are composed
of a lot of small regions but I don't think there's any noticeable
difference.
In process of doing that, I discovered a bug (no doubt copy+paste
which escaped an intended update) with monster handling. The check
for whether a monster is entering a region depends upon whether the
hero is in that same region rather than whether the monster is
already inside. So a monster can enter a region--or have a moving
one enclose it--with impunity if the hero is already in that region.
Once the hero moves out of it, the monster will finally enter it.
Make some progress on a couple of next minor release checklist
items, hopefully without introducing too many new bugs. This
is just the initial commit, and work continues.
Checklist items:
Savefiles compatible between Windows versions, whether 64-bit
or 32-bit in little-endian field format.
Selection of file formats:
historical (structlevel saves),
lendian (little-endian, fieldlevel saves),
and just for proof-of-concept, ascii fieldlevel saves
(the ascii is huge! 10x bigger than little-endian).
For the fieldlevel save, all complex data structures recursively
get broken down until until it is one of the simple types that
can't be broken down any further, and that gets when it gets
written to the output file.
New files needed for this build:

This is just one approach. I'm sure there are countless others
and they have different pros and cons.
For producing the auto-coded files a utility called
universal-ctags, that is actively maintained and evolving,
was used to do all the heavy-lifting of parsing the
NetHack C sources to tabulate the data fields, and store
them in an intermediate file called util/nethack.tags
(not required for building NetHack if you already have a
generated include/sfproto.h and src/sfdata.c)
util/readtags (also not required for building NetHack
itself) will decipher the nethack.tags file and produce
the functions that can deal with the NetHack struct data
fields.

The combination universal-ctags + util/readtags has been
tried and tested under both Windows and Linux, so it is
not tied to a particular platform.
Note: util/readtags will work only with universal-ctags
output, so other ctags are unlikely to work as-is.
Universal-ctags can be build from source very easily
under Linux, or under Windows using visual studio.
