This is reproducible with shorter character name "wizard" by being
"nominally neutral" or "nominally chaotic". I had a 2 digit level
but didn't notice that my AC took up only 1 digit and ended up
using 125ish blessed potions of full healing to get 4 digits of hit
points in order to get the line to wrap between "very" and "fast".

The key was "Message History", indicating msg_window:full or other
setting which causes ^P to bypass the top line message window and
use a general text window to deliver all history lines at once.
The original feedback splits the line by replacing the space
between "very" and "fast" with a newline, which topline handling
notices and processes as special, but then leaves in place.
msg_window:full results in tty_putstr() case NHW_TEXT, which treats
newline as an ordinary character since it doesn't expect to see
that in text. Squeezing out three doubled spaces made room for
"very\nfast," on the top line. process_text_window() attempted to
write it there, but putchar() wrote up through "very," on one line,
then output the newline which resulted in "fast," on the next line.
Then explicit cursor positioning set things up to put "invisible"
at the start of that line, overwriting "fast," so making it appear
to be missing.
Add MG_BW_LAVA to mapglyph() instead of hijacking MG_DETECT. Used
to display lava in inverse video if color is disabled and lava is
using the same display character as water (which is the default).
(The use_inverse option must be enabled for tty to honor it. X11's
text mode doesn't care. Win32 does care but probably shouldn't--it's
not a case like tty where the hardware might not support it.)
This implements both MG_DETECT and MG_BW_LAVA for X11, but only if
the program is built with TEXTCOLOR enabled. Those should work even
when color is not supported, but I suspect that configuration is
unlikely to ever be used so didn't want to spend the time to figure
out how to do it. (The relevant data is overloaded on the color
data, so not available when TEXTCOLOR is disabled.)
The win32 revision is untested.
When --More-- was written to leftmost column of line 2 while the
hero was swallowed, after player acknowledged it and the top line
was cleared, the cursor ended up in the wrong place. I still
don't understand what in the world is going on here, but adding
'flush_screen(0)' after 'swallowed(1)' in docorner() makes the
problem go away. Why is the behavior different when --More-- is
in the first column than when it's anywhere else?
After that fix, I commented the whole thing out. The swallowed
optimization is just not significant enough to justify peeking at
core internals.
Core bit: prior to those two changes, I tried inserting 'bot()'
into swallowed(). It moved the mis-positioned cursor from the
end of the second status line to on the map just right of the
bottom right corner of the swallowed display. That didn't fix
anything, but I've left it in place. bot() to update status is
needed following cls(); now it happens before redrawing the map
instead of at some point after.
Start coloring after the space which follows the selection indicator
instead of on that space. The difference isn't noticeable when the
highlighting is just a color, but it is if that highlighting includes
inverse video or underline which visibly apply to spaces. So for
a - entry A
the old code produced
a -########
and this revised code produces
a - #######
where '#" indicates characters subject to menu coloring.
This reverts commit 2ff96797a8.
Since this pull request was made to the DevTeam, a commit has appeared
in the official repo's NetHack-3.6.0 branch which effectively does the
same thing: NetHack commit 98b5f58 (tty menu coloring) by PatR.
There was a report during beta testing that menu lines which were
displayed in color showed the whole line in color, unless/until an
item was selected or unselected, in which case the '-', '+', or '#'
was rendered in monochrome. The suggestion then was to redraw the
selection character in color, but I went the other way. Menu
entries will render the selector letter and selection indicator in
monochrome all the time, and only the text of the menu entry will
honor menucolors.
Report states that using OSX Xcode IDE results in use of 'clang
Modules', whatever those are, and role.c's 'filter' struct ends up
conflicting with a function declared by <curses.h> (or possibly
<ncurses.h> since one includes the other). src/role.c does not
include <curses.h>, so this smacks of the problems caused by using
precompiled headers on pre-OSX Mac.
Instead of trying to import nethack into Xcode, I temporarily
inserted '#include <curses.h>' at the end of unixconf.h. gcc did
complain about 'filter' in role.c (but not in invent.c, despite
-Wshadow), and then complained about termcap.c using TRUE when it
wasn't defined (after in had been #undef'd, where there's a comment
stating that it won't be used in the rest of that file), and also
complained about static function winch() in wintty.c conflicting
with external winch() in curses.
This renames 'filter' and 'winch()' to things that won't conflict.
Also, our winch() is a signal handler but had the wrong signature
for one. And the troublesome use of TRUE was in code that was
supposed to be dealing with int rather than boolean.
Instead of just using 'random' as the default choice if the user hits
<return> when picking role, race, gender, or alignment, flag it as
pre-selected in the menu so that it can be seen to be the default.
Someday somebody is going to have to fix up the interaction between
PICK_ONE menu and pre-selected choice....
Adding deafness to the status line spurred me on to something I've
wanted to do for a long time. This adds 'Stone' and 'Strngl' as
new status conditions, and moves the five fatal ones: "Stone Slime
Strngl FoodPois TermIll" to the front of the status list since
information about them is more important than any of the others.
"Ill" has been renamed "TermIll"; "Df" has been renamed "Deaf";
"Lev", "Fly", and "Ride" are three additional new conditions, with
Lev and Fly being mutually exclusive. After the fatal ones, the
order of the rest is now
<hunger> <encumbrance> Blind Deaf Stun Conf Hallu Lev Fly Ride
To handle the longer potential status line, the basic bot2() is now
smarter. If the line is wider than the map, 'T:moves' is moved from
the middle to the end. If the line without time is still wider than
the map, then experience (HD if polyd, Xp:M/nnnnnn is showexp is on,
or Exp:M) is moved in front of time at the end. If the line without
experience and time is still wider than the map, dungeon level plus
gold is moved from the beginning to be in front of experience. The
fields are just reordered, not truncated, so if the interface code
can display lines wider than the map they'll retain the extra info.
The gist is than health and associated fields (Hp, Pw, Ac) get first
priority, status conditions get second priority, then the rest. In
the usual case where there aren't many conditions, status display is
the same as it has been in the past.
STATUS_VIA_WINDOWPORT has been updated too, and it builds for tty
and X11. But the bot2() revision to reorder sections has not been
implemented for that.
win/win32/mswproc.c has been updated but not tested.
STATUS_VIA_WINDOWPORT without STATUS_HILITES had several compile
problems; now fixed for core and tty. STATUS_VIA_WINDOWPORT with
STATUS_HILITES has not been tested.
Several people have asked if 3.6.0 supports playing with tiles on
a public server. Because there's no way for the user's end to know
what that white @ is, this adds special console escape codes for
tile hinting.
The idea was originally a patch called TelnetTiles by Justin Hiltscher,
but this expanded version comes via NAO, where it's been in use for years.
This is basically an interim hack, which should go away when/if
we support actual client-server model.
This was a request from a blind player. It's hard to find
the left edge of the menu when it's drawn on the map, so
clear the screen and align menus to the left edge of the screen
when this option is turned off.
Originally this was called the window edge patch.

During role selection, the final 'is this ok?' menu has 'yes'
preselected so accepted <return> or <enter> to answer yes. The
pick-role, pick-race, &c menus prior to getting to that stage didn't
have a default, so using <enter> meant nothing was chosen, and choosing
nothing was treated as a request to quit. This changes that so it's a
request for 'random' instead.
'Provisional fix' because it ought to do this by making 'random' be a
pre-selected menu entry so that the default choice is visible. But
that takes more effort than I'm inclined to expend on this.
If player specified all four facets of role: role, race, gender, and
alignment, via command line or option settings, the tty interface still
asked the player to confirm whether the character's role/&c was ok?
Skip that confirmation when all four things have already been chosen.
Like the just fixed naming for discoveries list, there are several
other add_menu() calls which specify <space> instead of 0 as a useless
selector on separator lines. These others are all for role selection,
where menus don't get big enough to need next-page.
I don't know what I was thinking at the time, although it must have
seemed like a good idea for some reason....
Keep window bookkeeping up to date when tty interface is shuting down.
The other interfaces should do something similar when they make windows
known to the core become unavailable.
Use casts to try to suppress a couple of assignments of long to short
that Michael's compiler warns about. 'cw->maxrow' might have a value
that's too big for 'short' (when dealing with really big menus), but
'cw->maxcol' never will (unless someone comes up with a terminal or
emulator that's wider that 32K-1 characters...).
Release some dynamically allocated memory prior to exit. These were
previously left alone due to assumed complexity (at least by me...),
but dealing with them turned out to be straightforward.

These are the last things that 'heaputil' always reported as not freed
for the basic Unix+tty configuration. (I've observed other things not
being freed; those are post-3.4.3 bugs that need to be found and fixed.)
Plus a modest amount (really!) of reformatting.
Also got rid of 'copy_of()' since dupstr() does the same thing [except
for the 'treat Null as ""' part; when needed, that can be done in the
call: dupstr(!str ? "" : str)].
Error reported in display.c in current master code is gone,
but the menucolors stuff generated the following warnings when TEXTCOLOR wasn't defined.

Add MG_OBJPILE flag, which windowports can use to check if a location
has more than one object stack. If use_inverse is on, TTY will use
inverse to show such piles. If a boulder is the topmost item on a pile,
then the object pile flag is not used; mainly because boulders are "solid",
boulders dropped by monsters are nearly always over other objects, and so
that special levels such a Sokoban can "hide" items under the boulders.
TODO: a "pilemark", analogous to "petmark", perhaps a green plus sign,
which can be used by windowports with tiles.

print_glyph now takes a second parameter.
Tiles on tiled ports always looked odd on places like the plane of air
where the background color of the tile didn't match the general background
of the surrounding area.
3.6 made that even worse and more glaringly noticeable with the introduction
of darkened room tiles.
The code to actually send something useful through the new parameter
for window ports to take advantage if they want will follow.
Honor things like OPTIONS:role=!tourist and NETHACKOPTIONS='race=!orc'
when performing interactive role selection. I don't think it was
completely correct when players let the program choose, but it must
have been close enough because we haven't gotten any complaints.
The post-3.4.3 interactive selection was ignoring options-base filtering
entirely and did get complaints for the pre-beta.
Role selection has a ton of code which bloats the program without doing
anything useful for actual game play. It ought to be split off into a
separate front end.

Move the windowport stuff out of botl.c and into windows.c

Suppress some mostly longstanding "unused parameter" warnings where
the usage was generally conditional.
restlevl() had a conditional closing brace that confused the recent
reformat, resulting in some code inside a funciton ending up flush
against the left border (first column, that is, as if outside of the
function).
I'll push a formatting guide at some point. There may still be
outstanding changes, but please feel free to resolve those as you arrive
a them.
To the best of my knowledge, there is no changes to the actual code
content, but the formatter does have the occasional bug. If you run into
an issue, please fix it!
Allow the 'I' command to show inventory of known blessed items via
pseudo object classes B, C, U, and X. That's instead of an showing
inventory of specific object class. The two can't be combined
because 'I' operates on single character input.
I had to modify tty_yn_function to prevent it from forcing a BUCX
character into lower case (simply using lower case would cause a
conflict with 'u' and 'x' for inventory of shopping bill), and did
that by checking whether any of the acceptable response characters
are upper case. Pretty straightforward and shouldn't impact any
other uses that don't specify upper case choices.
I did the same thing for X11. Other interfaces most likely need
to do something similar. If they don't, a response of 'B' or 'C'
(for menustyle:traditional or menustyle:combination) will simply
not work, without causing any problems, same as typing an invalid
choice, and 'U' or 'X' will give shop feedback instead of the
requested subset of inventory.
The Guidebook revisions are untested.

Adjust the code and the command line Makefile so that
you no longer have to choose whether to build the tty
version NetHack.exe, or the gui version NetHackW.exe.
Both will now be built in a single 'nmake install' pass.
