Make it so that washing your gloved hands in a fountain, pool, or sink
can still rust your gauntlets even if it successfully removes the grease
from your fingers. There wasn't much logic behind the two effects being
mutually exclusive, since the oily fingers of the Glib effect don't
normally protect against water damage like the item being 'greased'
does, and this introduces a possible tradeoff that could make whether or
not to clear Glib by washing your hands a more interesting tactical
decision.
cg.zeroobj was originally added (under its previous unprefixed name)
for providing a one-line way to zero out the fields of a struct obj.

More recently, the address of cg.zeroobj began to be used as a return
flag to indicate some things, but the 'const struct obj zeroobj' wasn't
an ideal fit for the purpose and required a number of casts, including
casting away const.
Provide a better fitting variable (gi.invalid_obj) and eliminate a
number of casts.
Suggestion from entrez: If dipping something in a sink while hands
are slippery happens to cause that sink to break, only remind player
about still being Glib if the item was '-' or uarmg.
Redo one of the fixes entries: dipping a potion into a sink does not
dilute it. The potion is used up and gives a hint about what it does
so player might discover it.
If hero has slippery hands, include '-' among likely candidates for
item to #dip when dipping at a pool, fountain, or sink location.
When dipping an item (including hands), have a modest chance for the
sink to be destroyed--which turns it into a fountain--each time so
that it can't be used to blank scrolls an unlimited number of items.
(Pools can already be used for that, but you need to obtain water
walking ability or else drop most of your stuff and enter the water;
sinks weren't imposing any such requirements or risks.)
This is largely taken from xNetHack with a few minor changes. Dipping a
potion into a sink can help with item identification by producing the
potionbreathe effect (or a sink-specific effect, for a couple potions).
Dipping other items will just run water over them. I also added the
capability to wash your hands at a sink.
Dipping hands (with '-') or currently-worn gloves in a fountain or pool
will cause the hero to wash her hands, washing away any oil and clearing
the Glib intrinsic timeout. This does mean bare hands can be used to
fish for fountain effects, without having to pick up a stray arrow and
carry it around as a dipping item, but having your hands be the only
thing that does not activate those effects felt weird. If that would be
too unbalancing this could be scrapped.
'Fix' fountain.c:598:18: warning: check of 'otmp' for NULL after
already dereferencing it [-Wanalyzer-deref-before-check]
The original code was ok. Either the analyzer has a bug or NONNULL
in extern.h's 'extern struct obj *mkobj(int, boolean) NONNULL;' is
not expanding to the expected value.
This replacement code should be easier to comprehend and with any
luck be simpler to analyze.
This replaces most of commit 0ca2af4d8b
from a couple of days ago with something more robust. That change
actually introduced redundant code that caused fountain and/or sink
count to be off instead of preventing it.
Revise set_levltyp() to update level.flags.nfountains and
level.flags.nsinks if setting the type to or from fountain or sink.
A bunch of places that were setting levl[x][y].typ directly needed
to be revised to use set_levltyp() instead. set_levltyp() itself
hadn't been updated to handle LAVAWALL (to force such to be lit).
Insert the calls to trigger a number of potential soundeffects
into the core.
If no additional soundlib support is integrated into the
build, then the Soundeffect macro (sndprocs.h) expands to nothing:

That macro definition checks for the hero not being Deaf; it checks
to ensure that the active soundlib interface has a non-null
sound_soundeffect() function pointer; and it checks to ensure
that the active soundlib interface has declared that it supports
soundeffects by setting the SNDCAP_SOUNDEFFECTS bit in its sndcap
entry. That just means that the interface routines are prepared to
accept and deal with the calls from the core, whether or not it
actually produces the desired soundeffect.
A number of C compiler suites have a math.h library that includes a yn()
function name that conflicts with NetHack's yn() macro:
"The y0(), y1(), and yn() functions are Bessel functions of the second kind,
for orders 0, 1, and n, respectively. The argument x must be positive. The
argument n should be greater than or equal to zero. If n is less than zero,
there will be a negative exponent in the result."
At one point, isaac64.h included math.h, although that has since been removed.
Some libraries used in NetHack (Qt for one) do include math.h and that required
build work-arounds to avoid the conflict.
Rename the NetHack macro from yn() to y_n() and avoid the math.h conflict
altogether, eliminating the need for that particular work-around.
A potion of acid could be destroyed and freed by dipping into a
fountain, then dereferenced after the fact -- both when checking its
type immediately after the water_damage() call (as was noticed by
hackemslashem and amateurhour on IRC), and also in the later switch/case
a few lines further down in dipfountain().
I basically reversed the original 'er != ER_DESTROYED' test here: as it
was before this, I think the only thing that could hit it was a greased
potion of acid, which would survive the initial dip due to the grease.
Such a potion would be silently deleted. Potions of acid which were
actually destroyed by water_damage, on the other hand, could be allowed
to continue down to the switch/case of further effects (and associated
dereferences). I think this makes more sense in reverse, with potions
that were protected by grease actually being protected and producing
normal dip effects, and potions of acid which exploded causing an early
return with no further effects. This effectively prevents the various
use-after-free scenarios that were possible, too.
The consolidation of global variables from scattered source
files into decl.c and declared in decl.h was begun in 3.7.0.
Their placement in common files was done for centralized
initialization and potential re-initialization during a
"play again" scenario.
It wasn't really necessary for all of them to be housed in a
single huge structure to meet the "play again" requirement,
and the single huge structure has been a little unwieldy when
it comes to maintenance.
Following this commit, instead of one single extremely large structure
named 'g' to house all of the relocated global variables, they
are distributed into several ga through gz.
To make things easy for the developer, each variable is placed
into the struct corresponding to the starting letter of the variable.
That way, no lookup is required in order to know which struct houses
a particular variable, it is a simple match to the starting letter
for all the centralized global variables.

Since losestr and losehp calls go together most of the time, this feels
like it probably makes more sense than repeating the killer name/format
twice in a row all over the place.
Remove callers' responsibility to deal with possible hero death when
calling losestr. This is less fragile and error-prone than leaving it
in the caller's hands, but it means that death from the monster spell
'weaken target' no longer goes through done_in_by, and the death reason
is no longer "killed by <monster name>".
... unless there's some other form that would override the choice,
such as a worn dragon armor, lycanthropy, or vampirism.
The polymorph will be in effect for 10-24 turns.
One of the drivers of this change was that screen coordinates require a
type that can hold values greater than 127. Parameters to the window
port routines require a large type in order to be able to have values
a fair bit larger than COLNO and ROWNO passed to them, particularly for
their use to the right of the map window.
This splits the uses of xchar into 3 different situations, and adjusts
their type and size:

This increments EDITLEVEL in patchlevel.h
Add some basic functions to iterate through the monster list,
ignoring dead monsters. Mainly just to allow splitting up code
into discrete functions.
Not quite happy with the get_iter_mons_xy - should probably have
a pointer to iterator data struct, which gets passed through instead,
but this works for now.
When the fountain quaffing monster detection effect was triggered on a
level without any monsters, no message would be printed. I think this
was the only scenario where drinking from a fountain wouldn't print
anything, so it stood out as unusual.
Print a messsage in the case monster detection fails, to make it
consistent with other fountain effects and ensure it's clear the hero
did still drink from the fountain on that turn. I used "the water
tastes like nothing" for the (sort of tenuous) connection to there being
nothing living on the level, but there might be a better message to put
in there.
Redo the recent artifact creation stuff by replacing several nearly
identical routines with one more general one. Also adds a tracking
bit for one or two more creation methods. That changed artiexist[]
from an array of structs holding 8 or less bits to one holding 9, so
bump EDITLEVEL in case the total size changed.
This should have been broken up into multiple pieces but they're
all lumped together. I did ultimately throw away a fourth change.
Implement artiexist[].bones and artiexist[].rndm artifact creation
tracking bits that were added recently. Doesn't need to increment
EDITLEVEL this time.
Add a new wizard mode feature: if you use `a to show discovered
artifacts, it will prompt about whether to show the tracking bits
for all artifacts instead. If not using menustyle traditional,
you need at least one artifact to have been discovered in order to
have 'a' choice available when selecting what class of discovered
objects to show for the '`' command.
artifact_gift(), aritfact_wish(), and so forth return a value that
none of the existing callers use, so cast their calls to (void).
Since the struct used for elements of artiexist[] has a lot of unused
bits, add some new ones to extend it to indicate how artifacts have
been created. It had

Some of the feedback when receiving an artifact or spellbook has been
revised.
When artiexist[] was changed from an array of booleans to an array of
structs a couple of days ago, EDITLEVEL should have been incremented
but I overlooked that at the time. This commit does so now.
Lay groundwork for generating a log event when finding an artifact
on the floor or carried by a monster. This part should not produce
any change in behavior.
Move g.artidisco[] and g.artiexist[] out of the instance_globals
struct back to local within artifact.c. They are both initialized
at the start of a game (and only used in that file) so don't need
to be part of any bulk reinitialization if restart-instead-of-exit
ever gets implemented.
Convert artiexist[] from an array of booleans to an array of structs
containing a pair of bitfields. artiexist[].exists is a direct
replacement for the boolean; artiexist[].found is new but not put to
any significant use yet. If will be used to suppress the future
found-an-artifact event for cases where a more specific event (like
crowning or divine gift as #offer reward) is already produced.
Remove g.via_naming altogether and add an extra argument to oname()
calls to replace it.
Add an extra argument to artifact_exists() calls.
Log game events, such as entering a new dungeon level, breaking
a conduct, or killing a unique monster, in a new "Major events"
chronicle. The entries record the turn when the event happened.
The log can be viewed with #chronicle -command, and the entries
also show up in the end-of-game dump, if that is available.
This feature is on by default, but can be disabled by
defining NO_CHRONICLE compile-time option.
This also contains "live logging", writing the events as they
happen into a single livelog-file. This is mostly useful for
public servers. The livelog is off by default, and must be
compiled in with LIVELOG, and then turned on in sysconf.
Mostly this a version of livelogging from the Hardfought server,
with some changes.
djgpp cross-compiler was griping about several.
This also removes these lines from sys/unix/hints/include/compiler.370.

Always give a message when creating a detected monster
during gameplay (as opposed to during level creation).
To prevent the message, use the MM_NOMSG flag for makemon.
Most places already handled their own messaging, but there
were some, such as bag of tricks, create monster magic
and random monsters created during gameplay that didn't.
If monsters see you resist something, generally elemental or magical

some minor changes.
This adds a superset of the code from github pull request #328
to create a short-lived cloud of steam when fire hits a pool or
fountain. The original code required C99; this doesn't. It also
allowed vapor clouds on the Plane of Water where they don't work
sanely becaure regions don't understand air bubble movement and/or
vice versa. This inhibits the clouds there [the same ought to be
done for scrolls of stinking cloud]. It also left as-is the code
that reported when fountains got used up even though conceptually
the steam should interfere with being able to see that. This adds
a glyph-check hack to augment cansee() so that fountains that boil
away entirely are hidden at the time.
Regions that block line of slight should be calling block_point()
when created and unblock_point() when removed but a naive attempt
to introduce that didn't work as expected so I'm giving up on.

From a reddit thread. Quaffing from a fountain can curse some of
hero's inventory, but when doing so it wasn't updating the persistent
inventory window if that was enabled.
It could also set the cursed flag on goid pieces; so could dipping.
When GOLDOBJ was activated unconditionally, several texts started referencing
"money" instead of "gold".
As we don't have the intention to introduce a complex coin system with
different denominations, change it back and also some other places that
reference "money".
struct rm.flags in overloaded for a bunch of rm.typ -dependent things
(doormask, altarmask, throne/fountain/sink looted, a few others) and
wasn't being reset for various cases where rm.typ gets changed.
I've changed a lot, some no doubt unnecessarily, and probably missed
plenty. This compiles but has not been thoroughly tested.
