Those tests were only checking the permonst mflags2 field
so anytime those tests were used in the code, they came
up false for things like an elven ranger. An elven ranger
should return true for an is_elf() test, as an example.
That happens because the profession monsters in monst.c
are defined with M2_HUMAN.
This augments those is_*() race tests to also check for a
matching player race as well.
Generally, fish should lay their eggs in the water and
not on land, but the game was only allowing the opposite.
Eels are catadromous and lay their eggs in the Sargasso Sea,
not in the dungeon.

The monst struct has 'mintrinsics' field which attempts to handle
both mon->data->mresists and extrinsics supplied by worn armor, but
polymorph/shape-change was clobbering the extrinsics side of things.
Potentially fixing that by changing newcham() to use set_mon_data(...,1)
instead of (...,0) solved that but exposed two other bugs. Intrinsics
from the old form carried over to the new form along with extrinsics
from worn armor, and update_mon_intrinsics() for armor being destroyed
or dropped only worked as intended if the armor->owornmask was cleared
beforehand--some places were clearing it after, so extrinsics from worn
gear could persist even after that gear was gone.
So, fixing the set_mon_data() call in newcham() was a no go. This
fixes update_mon_intrinsics() and adopts the suggested code from
github pull request #177 to have mon->mintrinsics only handle worn
gear instead of trying to overload innate intrinsics with that. This
is a superset of that; the flag argument to set_mon_data() is gone
and mon->mintrinsics has been renamed mon->mextrinsics. (The routine
update_mon_intrinsics() ought to be renamed too, but I didn't do that.)
I did much of this quite some time ago, as prequisite for a different
bug report about monsters vs shades, then set it aside. It ended up
being more complicated than I anticipated.
When deciding whether various non-weapon attacks might hit a shade,
hmonas() was not checking for blessed or silver armor that should have
been applicable. It did check boots when kicking, but not gloves or
rings (when no gloves) when touching, or outermost of cloak/suit/shirt
when hugging, or helmet when head-butting. (The last one is actually
moot because nothing with a head-butt attack is able to wear a helm.)
The problem was more general than just whether attacks might hit and
hurt shades. Various undead and/or demons are also affected by blessed
and/or silver attack but weren't for non-weapon attacks by poly'd hero.
At least two unrelated bugs are fixed: a rope golem's AT_HUGS attack
gives feedback about choking but was fully effective against monsters
which fail the can_be_strangled() test. And it was possible to hug a
long worm's tail, rendering the entire worm immobile.
The report also suggested that all artifacts be able to hit shades for
full effect, but by the time shades are encountered everyone has an
artifact so that would nullify a shade's most interesting ability.
TODO: monster against hero and monster against other monster need to
have similar changes.
Take a first step towards making the mons[] array be readonly.
The only other place that updates it is when changing succubus and
incubus AD_SSEX attacks to AD_SEDU ones and that can be handled
via existing getmattk(), but so far has proven to be trickier than
anticipated.
The original report complained that gremlins seemed impervious to
Sunsword's light yet a flash from a camera caused them to cry out in pain
despite "The long sword named Sunsword begins to shine brilliantly!"
This commit does two things:
1. A dmg bonus is applied against gremlins using a lit Sunsword.
2. Gremlins will generally avoid the light emitted by Sunsword.
There's a few minor flavor bits thrown in also.
It is understood that this effectively makes Sunsword provide
"gremlin-proofing", but the gremlin myth and Sunsword's characteristic
feature pretty much demand it.
bug 42
When a monster killed a paper golem with a fire attack, the player was
told that the golem "burns completely" yet it might still leave some
blank scrolls as 'corpse'. The fix for that was one-line, but several
other death-by-fire situations which didn't report "burns completely"
were also leaving scrolls: fireball spell or scroll of fire or other
fire explosions (if any), also wand of fire. Fire trap and poly'd
hero with fire attack were already suppressing 'corpse'.
It seems to me that the reaction to "you feel dead inside" when you're
polymorphed into an undead creature at the time would be "so what else
is new?". Vary the "dead" when current form is something which gets
reported as "destroyed" rather than "killed" when killed. That happens
for things flagged as non-living. Now undead "feel condemned inside"
and golems "feel empty inside". Neither of those are ideal but they're
more interesting than "feel dead inside".
After becoming dead inside, give a reminder about that during
enlightenment and if you restore a saved game in that condition. It
was the latter that set this in motion: I wanted to confirm that
restoring with u.uhp == -1 didn't give "you aren't healthy enough to
survive restoration" when polymorphed. (It doesn't; the game resumes
and you'll die if/when you rehumanize.)
My old monkey patch was a bit more extensive than Pasi's, although
it didn't originally include letting apes be tameable with bananas.
No sense in throwing it away:
1) Make monkeys and apes be omnivores instead of carnivores.
2) Make bananas be preferred food for herbivore/omnivore subset
of Y-class, so excludes carniverous ape, owlbear, and yeti.
[Sasquatch remain omnivorous but aren't tameable with bananas.]
3) While updating befriend_with_food(), make horses be affected
only by food they might eat, not by meat and corpses and tins.
So they'll be somewhat harder to cope with for characters not
strong enough to kill them. [Dogs and cats are unchanged.]
Not included (not even implemented...):
0) Allow archeologists to choose monkey for starting pet.
[The one in "Raiders of the Lost Ark" didn't actually belong
to Indiana Jones but spent a lot of time accompanying him.]
Bananas are quite rare, and none of the simians are very strong,
so this won't be in any way overpowered - just a bit of flavor.
I think this was originally Derek's change from Sporkhack, but
similar ones have been done in the community multiple times
in the past.

I did my best to exempt some of the bigger aligned blocks from the reformatting
using the /* clang-format off */ and /* clang-format on */ tags. Probably some
that shouldn't have been formatted were anyway; if you encounter them, please
fix.
The clang-format tags were left in on the basis that it's much easier to prune
those out later than to put them back in, and it means that, modulo my custom
version of clang-format, I should be able to run clang-format on the source tree
again without changing anything, now that Pat has fixed the VA_DECL issues.
New macro slimeproof() to decide whether something is susceptible
to turning into green slime. Most of this is just making use of existing
cached permonst values in damageum() and mdamagem() and shouldn't affect
anything. I wanted to avoid mixing that in with the actual slime changes
which are coming.
Simplify is_lminion(); as a result, several source files no longer
need access to epri.h. (mondata.c already could have lived without it;
eshk.h as well.)

This is a foundation patch for patches to follow.
- use a full short index for mon->cham field.
- The current system of providing CHAM_XXX values
was limited to the 3 bits allocated in the bitfield and invalidated
save/bones if the field was expanded.
- The current system didn't provide an easy backwards change
if multiple monster types wanted to use the bit, there was a one
to one mapping: For instance, if you wanted a CHAM_VAMPIRE,
and you wanted vampires, vampire lords, and Vlad to use it, you
would have to have CHAM_VAMPIRE, CHAM_VAMPIRE_LORD,
and CHAM_VLAD defined to achieve that with the one-to-one backward
mapping.
- This new way just uses the mon[] index in the mon->cham field and
eliminates the need for CHAM_XXX (CHAM_ORDINARY is still used).
- no longer requires the cham_to_pm mappings
Try to address the problem From a bug report: turning the Wizard
of Yendor to stone preserves monster information with his statue and
presence of that information overrides the statue animation check
intended to prevent players from creating the Wizard (or other unique
monsters). That's ok for the current game--the monster had to have been
in play in order to be turned to stone--but is a problem if the statue
is found in a bones file. The report was for placing such a statue at
the location of an untriggered statue trap by a player who leaves bones,
but stone-to-flesh by the player who loads bones is a simpler way to
trigger this. (Aside from getting unique monsters earlier than usual
under some degree of player control they won't have their starting
inventory so special items like the Candelabrum might not get created.)
Using undead turning to revive corpses found in bones was another way to
get into the same trouble (I thought corpses of special monsters were
already excluded from bones?).
It looks like it's also possible to get strange quest behavior if
a corpse or statue of the leader or nemesis is brought into the dungeon,
left in bones, then revived by the second player, but I didn't attempt
to reproduce it. More work is probably needed; this tightens up leader
handling a bit but doesn't do anything about the nemesis. This patch
has already been spreading tentacles and I've got to cut it off....
The patch discards saved monster traits for corpses and statues of
unique monsters while saving bones; reviving or reanimating them will
produce doppelgangers instead of the original monsters, same as stone-to-
flesh on wished-for statues behaves. It also discards saved traits for
shopkeepers (also temple priests and vault guards--their traits weren't
saved in 3.4.2 though). That info might be useable when the corpse or
statue is on the same level as the monster started (ie, where its special
room is located), but that's a complication I'm going to bypass. This
patch also adds chameleon handling for statue activation--it wouldn't
have mattered in 3.4.2 since shapechangers didn't get their traits saved;
it does matter now but was omitted when trait-saving was extended to all
statues a while back. (It adds chameleon handling to corpse revival too,
but they still don't get their traits saved with corpses so that's just
protection in case of future modifications.)
Other bits: `cant_create()' is renamed to `cant_revive()' since
the latter is a more signicant use than wizard mode <ctrl/G> handling.
Now save traits with nymph corses so that cancellation can be propagated
if they're revived; that doesn't matter much but matches statue handling
(where it was more important since it dealt with succubi as well as with
nymphs). Explicitly initialize the shape-changer field of all monsters
instead of relying on implicit initialization to 0 (CHAM_ORDINARY).
There'll be a *much* shorter patch for 3.4.3 which will have to get
by with most of these obscure problems--fortunately they're unlikely to
impact many (any?) players.
For now, the code is conditional on BARGETHROUGH
being defined, while it gets tested further. While behavior is
different with and without BARGETHROUGH defined, savefiles
are the same either way.
After this patch is applied, only the riders have the M3_DISPLACES
bit set, but the Wizard and Vlad probably should too. Any others?
This change adds a new flaming() macro and uses it in several places
where the list of flaming monsters was tested. on_fire() didn't list
salamanders as already being on fire, but should have. A couple other
cases were not updated to include flaming sphere.
Nethack's manes are based on AD&D manes which are in turn based on the
manes of Roman legend. They are supposed to be spirits of the dead.
To that end, added them to the nonliving() macro. The biggest behavioral
change is that death spells no longer effect them, which does technically
make them a bit tougher but also makes sense. Also, they're so wimpy, it's
hard to believe anyone would use a death/disintegration on them anyway.
Some recent newsgroup discussion claiming that a pet ki-rin was
wearing a helmet (I think poster was hallucinating) caused me to look
at some of the hat handling code. There were a couple of noticeable
problems and one latent one in code added for 3.4.1. Polymorphing
into a minotaur pushes hard helmets off hero's head, but nothing
prevented you from putting one right back on. Helmet wearing monsters
who polymorphed into minotaurs weren't affected at all. And message
handling always assumed multiple horns even though we have some singled
horned monsters, but since all those have no hands they can't wear any
armor and that potential pluralization issue wasn't noticeable.
When Angels were introduced, they were always lawful. Somewhere along the
line, non-lawful angels were added, but is_lminion and uses of it was never
updated to address this change. Among other things, this resulted in
non-lawful angels delivering messages via #chat that are only appropriate
for lawful angels. That is addressed simply by changing the definition of
is_lminion, which must take a struct monst, not a permonst, to return valid
results. Also, non-lawful angels should summon appropriate monsters, not
lawful minions.
Polymorphing into creature with horns such as a minotaur,
will cause your helmet to fall off if it is made of a hard material.
Only minotaurs pass the has_horns() test in include/mondata.h
because the complaint specifically referred to them, but that
should perhaps be reviewed at some point by someone who is
certain which creatures have horns growing from their
head (some demons?)
