Surviving a gas spore's explosion (via hit points, not from life-saving)
left "gas spore's explosion" as stale killer.name. Being killed by
opening a drawbridge (but not by closing or breaking one) only assigned
killer.name if it didn't already have a value, so the stale reason got
used: crushed to death by a gas spore's explosion.
This fixes it two ways: clear the stale value after surviving the
explosion, and assign a specific reason when opening the drawbridge.
This also removes stale reason for death set up by various drawbridge
activity. For the usual case, the hero only survives by life-saving
which does its own clearing of killer.name. But there might have been
cases where it was being set for the hero when operating on a monster,
so no life-saving involved. The drawbridge code is not the easiest
code to navigate....
Do it properly, using the arguments to xkilled() instead of reversing
the conduct counter after the fact.
The xkilled() flag value of '1' has been reversed. It used to mean
'display message' but now means 'suppress message' since both of the
other flag bits are for suppression. All callers have been updated
to specify either XKILL_GIVEMSG or XKILL_NOMSG so the underlying
number remains transparent.
With DEBUG suppressed, I started getting
16 warning: empty body in an if-statement
and 2 warning: empty body in an else-statement
from gcc.
Using braces for an empty block instead of just ';' avoids the warning:

is bad,
if (bar) {
debugpline("bar");
}
is good. ;-)
The changes to lint.h are just precautionary.

I'll push a formatting guide at some point. There may still be
outstanding changes, but please feel free to resolve those as you arrive
a them.
To the best of my knowledge, there is no changes to the actual code
content, but the formatter does have the occasional bug. If you run into
an issue, please fix it!
* Replace variadic debugpline() with fixed argument debugpline0(str),
debugpline1(fmt,arg), and so on so that C99 support isn't required;
* showdebug() becomes a function rather than a macro and handles a
bit more;
* two debugpline() calls in light.c have been changed to impossible();
* DEBUGFILES macro (in sys.c) can substitute for SYSCF's DEBUGFILES
setting in !SYSCF configuration (I hope that's temporary).
Move debugging output into couple preprocessor defines, which
are no-op without DEBUG. To show debugging output from a
certain source files, use sysconf:
DEBUGFILES=dungeon.c questpgr.c
Also fix couple debug lines which did not compile.
This also includes fixes due to Derek Ray to depugpline to work better
on other platforms.

While looking at fixing the mfrozen issue for monsters (there's no
way to tell whether it's been caused by sleep or paralysis, necessitating
that some messages be vague or suppressed when actions impact monsters
who can't move), I noticed a drawbridge bug for the hero. It was using
the misleadingly named Sleeping intrinsic incorrectly. When that is
nonzero, the hero is prone to falling asleep at random intervals, not
necessarily asleep right now. I've always intended to rename it to
something that's not misleading, but hadn't ever gotten around to doing
so, until now: change the SLEEPING property to SLEEPY and the Sleeping
intrinsic/attribute to Sleepy.
This may be moot for the drawbridge. I can't remember any hero ever
jumping to safety instead of being crushed by either the bridge or its
portcullis, and I'm sure sleepiness hasn't been a factor. So I haven't
included any fixes entry about misusing Sleeping when it meant u.usleep
(or better yet, unconscious(); or even better, Unaware [a post-3.4.3
pseudo-property that tests both unconscious() and fainted() when checking
whether hero is incapacitated]).
From a bug report: you could end up
standing on water/lava if you survived being on an open drawbridge while
it was destroyed. This fixes the bridge destruction case; opening and
closing are handled differently and I left them alone.

An engraving written on a lowered drawbridge would be transfered to the
underlying terrain when the bridge was raised. The coverse was also true;
if you plugged the moat and then engraved on the ground, that engraving
would remain visible--and touchable if blind--when the bridge was lowered
to cover its spot. Rather than try to handle two different engravings at
the same coordinates (with one of those two changing locations when the
bridge is raised or lowered), this just wipes out any engraving at both
span and portcullis locations whenever the bridge state changes, like is
done for traps.
From a bug report: playing mastermind
with the castle drawbridge yields a sequence of "you hear tumblers click and
gears turn" messages when the notes are partly right, but no sound when all
notes are right and you succeed in opening the bridge. Blinded hero won't
know that it has opened and could reasonably expect to have heard 5 gears
turning. This gives a general gears turning message (for any bridge changed
by any means, not just castle's tune) when it opens or closes out of view of
the hero. So, you get a message about seeing it open when that is the case,
or about hearing gears if you can hear but not see, or no feedback if you
can't see it or hear it (You_hear() is a no-op when you're deaf).
Also, scatter some iron chains when a drawbridge gets destroyed. Iron
chain seems to be the only really suitable item available for bridge debris.
I think being asleep or unconscious ought to override vision the way
that being blinded does, but that's a more ambitious change than I care to
tackle. This replaces You("see ...") with You_see("..."), comparable to
You_hear(). It catches the reported door case and several variations of
light sources burning out while on the floor rather than in inventory, but
it probably misses some other cases. zap_over_floor() in particular is
highly suspect.
From a bug report, it is possible for the hero to
appear embedded in the wall after destroying the drawbridge. This is because
The variable "lev1", which was the entity's location, was being referenced
after e_died, but e_died can change the entity's location. So, as <Someone>
suggested, refer to the current location directly.
If a long worm's head is on the drawbridge and a tail segment is at the
portcullis and you raise the drawbridge, bad monster handling occurs
because of some recursion that occurs before set_entity is called again.
Not sure when this last worked; it's broken in 3.4.2 as well. Modified
e_died to ensure both entity objects for the same monster get cleaned up
so subsequent e_at calls behave as expected.
Introduce a new set of functions to manage delayed killers in the trunk, used
in addressing the various reports of delayed killer confusion. Since existing
delayed killers are related to player properties, the delayed killers are
keyed by uprop indexes. I did this to avoid adding yet another set of
similar identifiers.
- the new delayed_killer() is used for stoning, sliming, sickness, and
delayed self-genocide while polymorphed. Some other timed events don't
use it (and didn't use the old delayed_killer variable) because they
use a fixed message when the timeout occurs.
- A new data structure, struct kinfo, is used to track both delayed and
immediate killers. This encapsulates all the info involved with
identifying a killer. The structure contains a buffer, which subsumes the
old killer_buf and several other buffers that didn't/couldn't use killer_buf.
- the killer list is saved and restored as part of the game state.
- the special case of usick_cause was removed and a delayed killer list
entry is now used in its place
- common code dealing with (un)sliming is moved to a new make_slimed function
- attempted to update all make dependencies for new end.c -> lev.h

+ Deafness is now handled as a full-fledged attribute.
+ Check for deafness in You_hear(), rather than caller.
+ Check for deafness in caller, rather than verbalize(),
because gods can speak to characters in spite of deafness.
+ Since changes are being made to prop.h, reorder it to the
same order as youprop.h and enlightenment.
There are still some extraneous checks and missing checks
for deafness, which will be followed up in a future patch.
Because of the size of this patch and its savefile incompatibilities,
it is only being applied to the trunk code. Portions of this patch
were written by Michael Allison.

This patch:
- collects all context/tracking related fields from flags
into a new structure called "context."
It also adds the following to the new structure:
- stethoscope turn support
- victual support
- tin support
Fixing some iron ball/teleds stuff:
-- If the player can pass through walls, ignore all checks for walls, or else
things will behave weirdly.
-- Instead of using the kludge "if the distance is >2 it must be a teleport",
pass a parameter indicating whether they crawled or teleported onto the new
space. This fixes a special case, where the player moved one space and the
ball didn't move, but the chain moved through solid rock. This is acceptable
if teleporting and unacceptable if dragging.
This also required some rearrangement of teleds() so that u.ux,u.uy
are set after placing the ball, not before. I'm still not sure the pit
filling line is in the right place; anyone know?
