Extend "killed by the touch of death inflicted by <monster>" to buzz().
"Killed by a bolt of cold" becomes "killed by a bolt of cold zapped by
<monster>" or "killed by a blast of cold" becomes "killed by a blast
of cold exhaled by <monster>" and so forth.
More work than expected; the zap code isn't passed enough context.
BZ_M_WAND() was producing the wrong value for wands zapped by monsters.

A preliminary implementation has been attempted for macsound to test
the interface on macOS. No tinkering of the voices has been done.
Use of the test implementation requires the following at build time with make.
WANT_SPEECH=1
That needs to be included on the make command line to enable the test code,
otherwise just the interface update is compiled in.
I don't know for certain when AVSpeechSynthesizer went into macOS, but older versions
likely don't support it, and would just leave off the WANT_SPEECH=1.
If built with WANT_SPEECH=1, the 'voices' NetHack option needs to be enabled.
It was a bit strange, when I first started up the test, to hear Asidonhopo,
the shopkeeper, talking to me as I entered his shop and interacted with him.
Reported by elunna: a monster trapped in a pit or web that was
adjacent to a polymorph trap could enter that trap to change shape.
It would remain flagged as trapped but there's no way to escape
from a polymorph trap so it would be stuck.
Fix supplied by entrez: when a monster is picking MUSE strategy,
don't allow it choose "enter polymorph trap" if it is currently
trapped.
I entered the changes from the diff manually and added a bunch of
minor formatting bits.

Insert the calls to trigger a number of potential soundeffects
into the core.
If no additional soundlib support is integrated into the
build, then the Soundeffect macro (sndprocs.h) expands to nothing:

That macro definition checks for the hero not being Deaf; it checks
to ensure that the active soundlib interface has a non-null
sound_soundeffect() function pointer; and it checks to ensure
that the active soundlib interface has declared that it supports
soundeffects by setting the SNDCAP_SOUNDEFFECTS bit in its sndcap
entry. That just means that the interface routines are prepared to
accept and deal with the calls from the core, whether or not it
actually produces the desired soundeffect.
The consolidation of global variables from scattered source
files into decl.c and declared in decl.h was begun in 3.7.0.
Their placement in common files was done for centralized
initialization and potential re-initialization during a
"play again" scenario.
It wasn't really necessary for all of them to be housed in a
single huge structure to meet the "play again" requirement,
and the single huge structure has been a little unwieldy when
it comes to maintenance.
Following this commit, instead of one single extremely large structure
named 'g' to house all of the relocated global variables, they
are distributed into several ga through gz.
To make things easy for the developer, each variable is placed
into the struct corresponding to the starting letter of the variable.
That way, no lookup is required in order to know which struct houses
a particular variable, it is a simple match to the starting letter
for all the centralized global variables.
A global variable named 'amulets', would be found in ga.

Issue reported by AndrioCelos: bullwhip using monster was able to
snatch hero's weapon when hero was engulfed.
Fix is trivial: when a monster is choosing an item to use, don't
pick bullwhip if hero is engulfed. Regular attack attempts already
skip engulfed hero.

Issue reported by Melon2007: when non-deaf hero heard an unseen
monster read a scroll, the monster's type was identified accurately
(unless distorted by hallucination). That was intentional but it
doesn't seem plausible for the hero's hearing to be that acute.
Change it to report the monster type accurately if not hallucinating
and monster is the same species as the hero (as the current form if
hero is poly'd), otherwise report it as "someone" when it's humanoid,
otherwise as "something".
Also, if the monster is heard at a spot that would be visible if
hero could see, draw a "remembered, unseen monster" glyph there.

Short for distu(mtmp->mx, mtmp->my) (i.e. the distance between the hero
and the specified monster), which is a very common use of distu(). The
idea is that this would be a convenient shorthand for it; I actually
thought it (or something very similar) existed already, but couldn't
find it when I tried to use it earlier. Based on the number of uses of
fully-spelled-out 'distu(mtmp->mx, mtmp->my)' replaced in this commit
I'm guessing I just imagined it.
The pull request included some changes that were neither accidental nor
unintentional, so only a subset of the changes from pull request #869
submitted by klorpa were manually applied.

If a monster cannot move, for example because it's being
blocked off by boulders or walls, it will try to escape by some
method - such as a wand or scroll of teleportation.
Previously monsters used wands of teleportation at hero, if hero was
standing on top of stairs, or on a scary thing (eg. Elbereth or
scroll of scare monster).
Allow monsters to recognize when hero is behind a chokepoint and
monster has friends with them, hopefully teleporting the hero
out of the chokepoint.
... using the same hack when zapping themselves: If the level is
no-teleport, the monster will learn of teleport traps, and if
it knows about them, won't try using teleportation again.
According to comments in the code, this feature was disabled
because it never triggered, making it useless. I enabled the code
again, and monsters demonstrated a willingness to zap the player
with wands of teleportation. I am not sure of what exactly changed,
but I think this feature could trigger some interesting situations,
and absolutely deserves to make a comeback.
When the hero zaps a wand of digging down in an undiggable level, it
creates a pit. When a fleeing monster did the same thing, it had no
effect. Bring this closer to the behavior experienced by the hero: if a
monster tries to use a wand of digging to create a hole in an undiggable
floor, a pit will be made (and the monster will fall into it, if not a
flyer).
Add macros to convert AD_foo, WAN_foo, and SPE_foo to relative values
for passing to BZ_U_foo and BZ_M_foo macros.
Change some return values in monster spellcasting function from
magic numbers to MM_MISS or MM_HIT.
Make buzzmu consider hero resistances - previously the
monster with innate zapping ray (Angels and Asmodeus) would
just keep doing that attack, but they will now just curse if
it saw the hero resist the attack.
Make monsters being created in Sokoban that are given a random
defensive item be less likely to receive a wand of digging. Should
result in fewer extra holes needing to be plugged.
Resurrected from an old stash entry. I have no recollection of why
I didn't consider it to be ready for prime time way back then.
This is a descendent of an earlier patch I wrote. The main idea is still
to clearly communicate to the player *what* something is turning into,
without the need to farlook afterwards, and give them the opportunity to
add MSGTYPE for when something jumps on a polymorph trap and becomes an
arch-lich. If it happens out of sight, the player also might get a whiff
of the monster's smell, giving a bit of advance warning.
There is one new case in here, in normal_shape(), which came about
because I noticed a weird message sequence: "The magic-absorbing blade
cancels the python! You kill the chameleon!" with no intervening
message indicating the python reverted to a chameleon.
trycall() is a short docall() wrapper that is a no-op if the item is
already identified or the player has called the object type already. For
some reason, many calls to docall() did those same exact checks
beforehand.
This commit eliminates that redundancy by converting those calls into
trycall(), which is now made extern rather than local to do.c. No
behavior should be changed by this commit; I've checked that none of the
affected places could take a different code path now that the
oc_name_known and oc_uname checks are removed.
Move some code that was used to decide whether to call distant_name
or doname into distant_name so that the places which were doing that
don't need to anymore and fewer places can care about whether an
artifact is being found. There were two or three instances of
distant_name maybe being called, based on distance from hero, and
yesterday's artifact livelog change added two or three more and made
all of them override the distance limit for artifacts.
After that change to distant_name, make sure that conditional calls
to it become unconditional--just not displayed for the cases where
!flags.verbose had been excluding them. That way distant_name can
decide whether an item is up close and arrange for xname to find it
if it as an artifact.
Also, implement an old TODO. Wearing the Eyes of the Overworld
extends the distance that an item can be from the hero and still be
considered near anough to be seen "up close" when monsters pick it
up or drop it. The explicit cases were using distu(x,y) <= 5, the
distance of a knight's jump. Each quadrant around the hero is a 2x2
square with the diagonal corner chopped off. The replacement code in
distant_name calculates a value of 6, which is functionally equivalent
since the next value of interest beyond 5 is 8. Wearing the Eyes
(deduced by having Xray vision) extends that threshold an extra step
in addition to overriding blindness and seeing through walls: 15,
a 3x3 square in each quadrant, still with the far diagonal corner (16)
treated as out of range.
If you want to declare a pointer which the address pointed to is constant,
you should declare it as like `static const char *const var = "...";`.
This commit supplies missing `const` and prevents some programming
error in the future.
djgpp cross-compiler was griping about several.
This also removes these lines from sys/unix/hints/include/compiler.370.

Always give a message when creating a detected monster
during gameplay (as opposed to during level creation).
To prevent the message, use the MM_NOMSG flag for makemon.
Most places already handled their own messaging, but there
were some, such as bag of tricks, create monster magic
and random monsters created during gameplay that didn't.
Now I've remembered why I didn't follow through with these back when
I originally laid the groundwork. New urgent messages:
having an item of armor be destroyed
having weapon be grabbed by a monster's bullwhip
becoming engulfed
being grabbed by an eel
subsequently being drowned by an eel
dying of petrification
turning into slime then dying due to genocide
dying due to fatal illness
There are lots more candidates.
Teleporting a monster only updated the map. Give a message
so blind players can get the same information.
Making a monster invisible gives the same message, if you
cannot detect invisible.
Several other places where monsters teleported themselves
now also give the same message.
I thought there were more places that checked for "it" and substituted
"someone" or "something". Perhaps there are and I'm just not finding
them now. Anyway, this extends x_monnam() and adds some_mon_nam() and
Some_Monnam() to do that during monster name formatting instead of
having various bits of code try fix it up after the fact. The fixups
could be fooled by monsters given the name "it" or "It"; x_monnam()
won't be.
Give feedback for "<Mon> jumps onto a polymorph trap" in more
circumstances. It used to give the message if the monster could
be seen, and it would map the trap if the monster's location could
be seen. That led to some confusion when an infra-visible monster
was at a spot in the dark so the trap was accurately described but
didn't get mapped.
Map the trap if either the monster's or the trap's location can be
seen. If it isn't already known and isn't becoming known (the
infravision case), say "hidden trap" instead of "polymorph trap"
in the message. Give the "jumps onto trap" message if either the
monster can be seen or the trap's spot can be seen. When monster
can't be seen, it would normally be described as "It"; switch to
"Someone" (when humanoid) or "Something" (non-humanoid) instead.
Minor unrelated bit: the use-container action was between the 2nd
and 3rd polymorph cases. Move it, after the third one.
It's redundant with g.moves, so there is no more need for it.
Way, way back, it looks like g.moves and g.monstermoves can and did
desync, where g.moves would track the amount of moves the player had
gotten (and would therefore increase faster if the player were hasted)
and g.monstermoves would track the amount of monster move cycles, aka
turns. But this has not been the case for a long time, and they both
increment together in the same location in allmain.c. There are no
longer any cases where they will not be the same value.
This is a save-breaking change because it changes struct

should cure sliming. Implement the suggestion that quaffing a
burning potion of oil while turning into green slime will cure the
latter.
It's somewhat iffy since the slime is on the outside moving in and
the burning oil ends up on the inside, but the message sequence is
|You burn your face.
|The slime that covers you is burned away!
and it could be that igniting part of the slime quickly spreads to
the rest.
Implemented for monsters as well as for the hero. They will light
and drink the oil in a single turn in the extremely rare situation
where they actually have a potion of oil and need to use it.
If monsters see you resist something, generally elemental or magical
attack, or if they see you reflect an attack, they learn that and
will adjust their attack accordingly.
Originally from SporkHack, but this version comes via EvilHack with
some minor changes.
Issue was about being asked what to call a previously seen potion
which has been picked up and thrown by an unseen monster. Hero
shouldn't remember what the item description was. This is a much
more general change than just fixing that. Any item picked up by
an unseen non-tame monster will have all its *known flags cleared
since the hero can't see what that monster does to it. Same if an
item is picked up while seen but then used when unseen.
Unseen pets are excluded from the pick up case--but not the use
case--because they pick up and drop stuff continually and players
would just slaughter them if they caused item information to be
forgotten.

If a monster read a scroll of earth and got killed in the process,
there would be an "dealloc_obj: obj not free" panic when trying to
use up the scroll. It was dropped to the ground with any other
possessions and no longer in the monster's inventory at the time
m_useup() was called. Use up the scroll before performing its
effects.
The patch does something similar for potion of polymorph, but if
newcham() can kill the monster then there are other problems
besides trying to use up the potion. I kept that in anyway.
