02d784f039 fix U242 - bug with monks
Monks get a big penalty to hit when wearing a suit; otherwise they
get a bonus when not wielding a weapon. But as reported, that lets them
have their martial arts bonus even while wearing a shield which does seem
rather unexpected. This change makes them only get their to-hit bonus
while shieldless as well as weaponless. Impact on play balance is likely
to be quite small; late game characters hardly ever miss due to high luck
bonus and very early game ones won't have found a shield yet.

Shouldn't the "your armor is cumbersome" message be ``if (verbose)''?

bd0541679a Using 'P' to put on armour or 'W' to wear a ring
resulted in "That is a silly thing to [put on | wear]".

But those two cases really aren't so "silly", so adjust
the messages to better explain why the game objected
to the action and point new players at the appropriate
command.

Also adds a cmdassist message for the case where
'R' or 'T' have no appropriate items to point
new players to the correct command. (That can be
turned off with !cmdassist, of course.)

Also adds a const to a recent shade patch by request.

6bb53178eb fix B17006 - stacked boomerang handling
Breaking a boomerang while bashing with it didn't work right when
there was a stack of more than one involved. The message given had a
grammar buglet and the remaining boomerangs became unwielded. (This
issue wasn't present in 3.4.0 because the boomerang bashing code never
got called there.)

3c49f7a941 fix B15007 - boomerangs used hand-to-hand
Hitting with a wielded boomerang was supposed to have a chance to
break it, but the code was located in a spot that would never be reached
when bashing with a missile weapon. Also, its rnl() usage would have
made the bad effect--losing your weapon--be more likely to occur when
you had good luck and less likely when you had bad luck. And it wasn't
setting `unweapon', so you wouldn't have gotten a bashing with barehands
message on the next attack after the weapon had been destroyed.

4fb26adf87 fix B16006 - cancelled monster-monster attacks
Various damage types which wouldn't work when a cancelled monster
attacks the player were working when it attacked other monsters instead.
Besides attempting to fix that, this also makes cloaks and other magic
blocking armor ("magic cancellation factor") work for monsters similar
to the way it works for the player.

Most types of damage appear to revert to physical damage when the
attacker is cancelled; I'm not sure that's appropriate in many of the
instances. The leg-pricking case was clearly wrong, since it gives
messages about the attack failing yet still hurt the character.

This really needs a lot more testing than I have energy for. I've
tried to clean up various inconsistencies and may have made some typos
in the process.

b9f66bb4c2 fix B15006 - breaking lances with jousting
Post 3.4.0 bug: "Your a lance (weapon in hand) shatters on impact!"
Use xname() instead of doname() to get "lance" instead of "a lance" here.
It also wasn't giving "you start bashing with your bare/gloved hands" on
the next attack after losing the weapon.

Shouldn't fire vortices and fire elementals also yield "already

b57bc61a80 jousting
Part I: it's possible to use two-weapon combat while wielding a
lance (which seems odd to me); the second weapon would hit even if the
the first delivered a lance jousting blow that knocked the target away.

Part II: always getting the joust knockback effect when hitting
with a lance while mounted was too powerful; implement a suggestion
from the newsgroup that it be a random chance based on skill level.

Related: it's now possible to break your lance when hitting; when
adding that, I noticed that it was theoretically possible (didn't try
to reproduce) for a shattered boomerang or mirror to yield the stagger
bonus sometimes given for unarmed attacks.

Forwarded from the newsgroup: when a monster gets hit by wand or

f13035aa48 B09001 - mhp > mhpmax after life drain
A monster hit by Stormbringer could take less damage to current
HP than it took to max HP if attacker had sufficient penalties, so
end up being healthier than its new maximum. This only applies to

modifiers that can trigger it.

35914ed186 R919 - applying lances
Fixes 2 bugs:
1) an impossible() could occur if you applied a lance against a long worm
because the code uses thitmonst to do the hitting, but didn't set bhitpos,
which is required before calling thitmonst.
Add the missing assignment.
2) applying a lance would never mark a knight as a caitiff. Added a new
check_caitiff function and called it from the 2 existing checks and in
the lance code.

40c4800613 B01016 - misplaced "you steal" message after being blasted by an artifact
I saw no straight-forward way to insert the message earlier in the
sequence, so... I reasoned that you might not yet have a good grasp and
not be able to continue holding the object when reverting form. So, I made
this into a drop case and made the drop message a rare past tense message.
Past tense is still OK for the other drop cases.
While testing this, I noticed you'd keep stealing even after reverting
form. Added code to stop this. Finally, there was a missing MON_NOWEP
call in the stealing code, added it.

d3078778eb waking waiting monsters after non-damaging attacks
- From a bug report, there are ways to, for example, steal items
from Medusa without waking her, by clever use of Conflict.
Avoid this by removing STRAT_WAITFORU when such an attack succeeds
- it was theoretically possible to use a similar approach to steal from a
STRAT_WAITFORU monster without it noticing while polymorphed and very fast,
so bulletproof this case as well. Simpler because failed attacks wake too.

a0ba9d1421 R739 - dead migrating monster
- It was possible for hmon_hitmon to call mhurtle to move a monster into a
hole or other trap, causing it to migrate. Then, hmon_hitmon would
subtract hp, and could mark the monster as dead. Later, dmonsfree would
notice the monster wasn't on the level anymore, causing the impossible.
Avoid the problem by just not hurtling the monster if it's going to die.
It's possible it will get lifesaved after not hurtling. Technically, if it
does die, the corpse should be hurtled, but won't be.
- treat jousting similarly

Strengthen Death by making his "drains your life force"
result take away some max HPs to augment the ordinary damage
it does. The chance for that effect is reduced from 80% to
75% though. Weaken Famine, Pestilence, and Demogorgon by
preventing them from hitting with both of their disease or
hunger attacks on the same turn. When their first attack
hits, the second now gets treated as a stun attack, but if
the first one misses then the second is unchanged and yields
another chance to deliver the disease or hunger effect.
