Michael Meyer 92d931f190 Refresh worm segments when (un)taming
Because newsym() would be called only on the head position of the worm,
if hilite_pet was on, the segments and head of a long worm would have
mismatched highlighting in the immediate aftermath of taming or
untaming.

Michael Meyer b363b702d7 Make pets unwilling to eat all polyfood() corpses
The previous is_shapeshifter() test meant that pets were still perfectly
willing to eat genetic engineer corpses and be polymorphed. Use
polyfood() instead.

Fixes #1183.

Michael Meyer d09a5beab3 Rename polyfodder() to polyfood()
'Polyfodder' is already a term frequently used by players to describe
items which are useful to hang on to specifically to zap polymorph at
(for example, extra unicorn horns, which can be turned into magic
markers). Using it as the name of a macro which tests whether a food
item will polymorph the creature consuming it is somewhat confusing, and
I think 'polyfood' is a lot clearer.

Michael Meyer 4ac8241917 Use a macro for all foo_RES to MR_foo conversions
This makes it easier to understand what is happening in each of those
places, and also much easier to find the places that conversion between
hero and monster resistances happens (since you can now just grep for
"res_to_mr"). I think I got all the instances where the macro should be
used but I'm not 100% sure since there wasn't a single unique term to
search for to find them all.

I replaced the modifications to give_u_to_m_resistances made in the
previous commit, so that it now uses the same macro as other
conversions, since otherwise it would be much harder to find the
complete list of places where conversions between hero and monster
properties happen.

Michael Meyer a71866d7d9 Refactor (very slightly) give_u_to_m_resistances
I think that using two arrays in tandem like give_u_to_m_resistances
originally did is frequently considered a bad idea, because one can
easily be added to or subtracted from without modifying the other --
that could obviously cause problems. Combining the arrays like this
avoids that potential problem.

Michael Meyer b662134eba Fix: bill_dummy_obj billed excessively for stacks
Add a way to request that unpaid_cost() produce the cost for a single
item, which is necessary for the price adjustment made in
bill_dummy_object. Another option would be to simply divide by quan in
bill_dummy_object, but this might be more future-proof in case
unpaid_cost ever involves more than simple multiplication by quan
(e.g. the use of alternate units vs the base price, as are used for
globs).

Michael Meyer 3025e05579 Copyedit PYEC encyclopedia entry
I initially went in here to change the description of "unreadable" text
on the card, since it has been possible to read it in-game since commit
870b124 in 2015. Then I also ended up making some edits to stylistic
issues I noticed, primarily varying vocabulary to eliminate the
repetition/reuse of words in phrases like "an /ancient/ artifact...
inscribed with /ancient/ runes" and "when /carried/, it grants the one
who /carries/ it ESP, and reduces all spell damage done to the
/carrier/". The result is a little bit tighter and I think reads
somehwat better.

Michael Meyer a3e8d8eacb Clean up trapeffect code a little bit
Some minor cleanup of artifacts from the splitting up of trap effects
into the various trapeffect_foo functions: consolidate redundant
variables in trapeffect_pit (tt vs ttype), and simplify the definition
of 'inescapable' traps a couple functions (since the functions are now
specialized to a particular trap, it's unnecessary to check ttype
there in determining whether it's an inescapable Sokoban pit or hole).

Michael Meyer 10a1befcf9 Teleport-control monsters resist being teleported
This makes sense to me, and further increases the challenge of erinyes
being summoned on astral after donning a helm of opposite alignment (if
the player has abused his alignment to the extent that erinyes have
teleport control), since they wouldn't be able to be banished across the
map simply by breaking a wand of teleport control.

Michael Meyer 6d29efcf04 Require a clear head to #offer
This will increase the potential challenge involved in donning a helm of
opposite alignment on Astral, now that it confuses the hero -- it means
that you must spend at least a turn after putting on the helm clearing
the confusion. Since putting on the helm of opposite alignment may also
summon erinyes, this hopefully turns it from a situation where it's a
no-brainer to immediately ditch them by #offering the Amulet of Yendor
into one where the player must actually stop and think a little bit.

Michael Meyer 0c9e34832c Make HoOA confuse the hero, summon erinyes
A helmet psychically reaching inside your head and twiddling knobs in
your brain must be a confusing experience. And the instant rejection of
your god (not to mention the vow that you made to find the amulet for
them), perhaps on the very cusp of their ascendance over the other gods,
is sort of the ultimate oathbreaking, so it interests the erinyes.

Michael Meyer f930a12fba Make erinyes scale with alignment abuse
Consistent with their mythological role of punishing those who had
violated societal taboos -- oathbreakers, hosts who attacked their
guests, etc -- erinyes scale with the cumulative amount of alignment
abuse the hero has committed over the course of the game. This is
tracked separately from the alignment record, and cannot be cleared by
the hero improving her favor with her god via "good deeds" as the normal
alignment record can. Erinyes will gain abilities, levels, and attacks
as the hero's alignment abuse worsens. They will also aggravate
monsters when near the hero.

Michael Meyer cad800337d Add rumors related to sink, hand-washing changes
These can hint at some of the changes that make it possible to dip
potions in sinks to potentially get a hint to their identity, and wash
your hands in sinks, pools, and fountains. I also mentioned rings in
the potion/sink rumor since there didn't seem to be a rumor about the
sink ring ID mechanic already (though there may be one in coded language
that my grepping didn't catch). The false rumor about hand-washing felt
to me like a good spot for a Macbeth reference.

WANT_SOURCE_INSTALL=1 can be specified when compiling to build NetHack

Michael Meyer 56d5bf50e5 Ignore loot/multidrop 'A' if no filter specified
The 'A' option in the #loot or 'D'rop menu selecting every selectable
item when used on its own has been the cause of many bag of holding
explosions and other typo-related frustration. Now that it operates on
other filters rather than overriding them, actually require some other
filter be selected for it to have any effect. This means that 'A' on
its own will do nothing, but 'A'+'a' will still act like 'A' alone
previously did. I think this will reduce the rate of serious typo
accidents in games, without being intrusive and while still maintaining
'A' as a useful option (which I think it is, in it's 3.7 incarnation --
I use it all the time in combination with other filters, especially
justpicked).

"Grand poohbah" is a common term while "high poohbah" is not, and it
seems appropriate for hallucinogen-distorted high priests. (It seems to
most commonly be spelled "grand poobah" but I left that alone; "poohbah"
seems like a decent compromise between that and the spelling of the

Add pickup_stolen option to autopick items stolen from you by a nymph or
monkey, even if they don't match your normal autopickup settings.
Replace was_dropped, was_thrown with a 2-bit bitfield that can contain
values LOST_DROPPED, LOST_THROWN, and LOST_STOLEN (or 0), since they
should all be mutually exclusive anyway as they track the most recent
way the item left the hero's inventory.

Michael Meyer d7d1c1476d Add option to exclude dropped items from autopick
This is based on a feature in UnNetHack (and I think some other variants
as well). If the hero intentionally drops an item with 'pickup_dropped'
disabled, don't autopick it back up when walking over that square again.

Typically when the player drops an item, it's because she doesn't want
it in her inventory any more, and this option stops autopickup from
defeating that goal (especially useful for tasks like stash management
without a container). Players have come up with workarounds to this
problem like toggling autopickup when approaching their stash pile or
adding name-based autopickup exceptions to allow them to exclude
individual items from autopickup, but this behavior should reduce the
need for those things.

I think 'pickup_dropped' is a little unfortunate because it suggests
equivalence to 'pickup_thrown' (i.e. any dropped items will be
automatically picked up regardless of autopickup exceptions). Calling
it something like 'nopick_dropped' might be better, but as far as I can
tell options cannot start with the word 'no' because it's interpreted as
a negation of the rest of the option name.

Michael Meyer a15d517326 Refine ice fumbling effects vs mounted hero
Fumbling makes the hero fall from the saddle, but the justification was
weak if the only fumbling source is riding over ice (the messages were
things like "you drop the reins" which made more sense from magical
fumbling). Make all fumbling from ice alone go into the ice-specific
"slip on the ice" block and add a chance to fall from your mount there.
If fumbling from another source while riding on ice, the hero will
always fall from his steed, since that's what happens on normal floor --
ice had actually been reducing this chance.

Michael Meyer 05f9950c99 Fix: fumbling vs losing footing in earthquake
Fumbling was apparently meant to make it harder to keep your footing
when an earthquake created a pit under you, requiring a 1/5 roll to
stay upright, but because it was added as an additional OR it actually
just gave the hero an additional (albeit unlikely) chance to retain her
footing. Make it actually have a negative impact on the hero's ability
to retain his footing rather than a minor boost.

Michael Meyer 03801773a8 Allow #dipping bare hands from pickinv menu
This wasn't being provided as an option because apparently all actions
which allow hands needed to be explicitly added to the list in getobj().
Add a fallback default 'hands' entry for any action which permits hands,
which both allows #dipping your hands and means that future additions of
hands as a target to other actions will work with OPTIONS=force_invmenu
without needing to remember this.

I made it so that hands will only be presented in the pickinv menu if
they are actually one of the suggested/likely items, which was a little
tricky because pickinv was only looking at actual inventory to determine
whether some items were excluded and the "show everything" option should
be presented. I had to add a parameter to inform it that hands are
allowed so it would know to display that option if they were allowed but
no 'hands' entry was passed in xtra_choice. Not sure if there was a
better way to let it figure that out...

Michael Meyer abafc849e9 Rust gauntlets when washing hands even if Glib
Make it so that washing your gloved hands in a fountain, pool, or sink
can still rust your gauntlets even if it successfully removes the grease
from your fingers. There wasn't much logic behind the two effects being
mutually exclusive, since the oily fingers of the Glib effect don't
normally protect against water damage like the item being 'greased'
does, and this introduces a possible tradeoff that could make whether or
not to clear Glib by washing your hands a more interesting tactical
decision.

Michael Meyer fe8710532e Fix: latent bug with finish_meating on catchup
Some players of 3.6 recently noticed that sometimes, mimics in shops
seemed to have moved around even before the player had entered the shop
or done anything to uncloak them. I found that this was because
finish_meating was being called for all non-eating monsters when
restoring a level (monsters that weren't eating anything would have
meating == 0 so always pass the 'imv > meating' check). This would
uncloak mimics -- but not all the time, because the 'mappearance != 0'
test meant mimics disguised as strange objects weren't uncloaked. I
think that was meant to be an additional check to confirm the monster
really did have a disguise, but in reality it meant that M_AP_OBJECT
"strange object", M_AP_MONSTER "giant ant", etc disguises wouldn't be
removed by finish_meating.

As it turns out, this was mostly fixed by coincidence in 221e4a7, which
fixed the "exclude actual mimics" check in finish_meating. So at this
point in 3.7 it's largely a latent bug, but it still had the potential
to improperly uncloak non-mimics who can disguise themselves (like the
Wizard of Yendor, maybe?), and could cause other problems if
finish_meating were updated to have additional effects, or if some
monster types were made to disguise themselves as a strange object when
eating a mimic.

Michael Meyer 79cdcff7e4 Fix: msg_window:combination and TTY getlin() ^P
The ability to use ^P from within a TTY getlin prompt didn't work with
msg_window:combination: it's a combination (unsurprisingly) of 'full'
and 'single', but hooked_tty_getlin() was treating it like 'full': i.e.
expecting everything to be displayed at once, with doprev_message()
returning only once the user was finished reading. I didn't even know
^P was supposed to be accessible from a getlin prompt until Pat's recent
commit 5120764, because I have always used msg_window:combination -- I
had come up with a system where I'd name a potion thrown at me "xx",
check the previous messages with ^P, and then rename it from the

Michael Meyer d42564bacd Better align drop_throw with hero ammo breakage
There is a comment above the function indicating that it should be
aligned with hero ammo breakage, but this wasn't the case. One big
difference is that any monster-thrown or -shot object would be deleted
unconditionally if it hit another monster trapped in a pit. I don't
know why that was in there, but it's not present in hero ammo breakage
chances, and it meant that a monster could sling the Mines luckstone at
the hero, hit a monster in the pit, and permanently lock the hero out of
getting the luckstone (as just happened to a player during the current
tournament). This pulls the hero breakage rules out into their own
function and uses that for monster breakage as well, to make sure they
are aligned. I also refactored drop_throw a bit to reduce the number of
separate variables tracking whether the object was deleted (was create,
objgone, and retvalu), and changed its (and ohitmon's) type to boolean.

Michael Meyer a69ff06e85 Make mstate flag checks more mutually consistent
Various places checking for whether a monster was on the map based on
mstate flags were inconsistent about which ones they checked (and then
place_monster() was additionally inconsistent with all of them about
which bits were cleared when placing a monster onto the map). I think
some places were also more convoluted than is now necessary because they
date back to mstate being an alias for mspare1, which it shared with
migflags before those became two separate dedicated fields (MSTATE_MASK
also dates back to this and is no longer used, so I removed it).

I tried to go through all the MON_foo mstate bits, understand when/why
they are set, and make the various functions I noticed more consistent
(with each other, and with my understanding of how the bits work) about
how they are treated. I don't know for a fact that I understood
everything right -- some diagnostic bits that aren't used for much of
anything, like MON_OBLITERATE, had me mystified until I read the 5ee78c5

check or otherwise) with the fuzzer in my testing so far. All the same,
it could probably use review by someone who has a good sense of what the
mstate bits mean.

Michael Meyer b993edca74 Follow-ups on EXPLORERS authorization
I realized that failed explore-mode authorization on a special-mode
saved game cannot downgrade the game mode further down to a normal game,
because this would dump the player back into a state where she has
completed some part of the game in explore mode but is eligible for the
topten list. This is even more true when the game was formerly a
wizard-mode game. Unforunately, that was the state my previous commits
left the game in.

Instead, if restoring an explore-mode or wizard-mode savegame, and the
player is authorized via sysconf for neither of those modes, fail
restoration entirely and start a new game instead. That's sort of
clunky and there could probably be more explanation provided, but it
should be an exceedingly rare occurance and I'm not sure what
alternative exists that would still honor the EXPLORERS and WIZARDS
restrictions. This shouldn't affect the way they default 'down a mode'
in other circumstances, i.e. the overwhelming majority of situations in
which EXPLORERS authorization is needed/checked.

For the same reason, I realized that the player can't be prompted
whether or not to enter explore mode, if being downgraded from a
no-longer-authorized wizmode save while explore mode is authorized. The
change from wizard mode to explore mode must be mandatory. I have also
switched that up so that it will force the change -- unfortunately, this
has the side effect of allowing the preservation of the save, but it's
more important to make sure a wizard mode game doesn't get reverted to

Michael Meyer 1e237e4b8f Fix: shunt to explore mode after wizmode auth fail
If an unauthorized player requests the game launch in wizard mode, it
will try to put her in explore mode instead. If this happened during
restoration of a previous (normal) saved game, the setting of discover
in wd_message() would bypass iflags.deferred_X, allowing the player to
select to keep the non-explore-mode save file. [Actually, when I tested
it I always got an error when answering yes to the "keep the save file?"
prompt, but that's a problem too...] Because deferred_X was still 1
after this, the pline "You are already in explore mode" would also be
printed following the prompt (when moveloop_preamble() attempted to set
explore mode).

Fix this so that loading a normal game with -D, then failing the
authorization, boots into explore mode via iflags.deferred_X and the
"really enter explore mode?" prompt, as it would have if -X were
specified on the command line to begin with.

Michael Meyer 98d2b0ecb3 Follow up on disturbing buried zombies
Change 852f8e4 by requiring a minimum impact before a buried zombie
nearby will be disturbed: light, but still excluding things like
scrolls, if it's a violent impact (dropped while levitating, thrown, or
kicked), and fairly heavy if the hero is just placing the item on the
ground normally.

Moving the call out of flooreffects meant it no longer applied to
pushing boulders around, so have moverock disturb nearby zombies. I
additionally had wake_nearby do the same thing.

Finally, I renamed check_buried_zombies (which doesn't really reflect
what it does) to disturb_buried_zombies.

Michael Meyer fa1f1134c8 Disambiguate b_trapped null bodypart value
b_trapped was treating 0 as a null value for its bodypart parameter, but
0 is actually the value of ARM, so b_trapped(..., ARM) would be treated
as intending no A_CON abuse. Add NO_PART = -1 to the bodypart_types
enum, and use that instead of 0 as the "no body part" value in
b_trapped, so that ARM can be passed to it without any ambiguity.

aosdict identified this issue in xNetHack and handled it differently; he
added NO_PART with a value of 0, incremented the existing bodypart_types
values, and padded the body part arrays so the actual body parts would
start at index 1. I think using NO_PART = -1 is simpler, but that's an
alternative approach that can be used instead -- it is advantageous in
that it automatically fixes any other places where 0 is assumed to be a
non-body-part value that I may have overlooked.

The other suggestion from Pat about potential extensions to bda0b3b. I

If the hero throws an unidentified fake Amulet of Yendor at the quest

This was one of Pat's suggestions for continuing in the same key as
bda0b3b; I think this makes a lot of sense, especially now that people
may be encouraged to throw things called "Amulet of Yendor" at the quest
leader. Arguable about whether a _known_ fake Amulet should still anger
the leader and quest helpers; as I have it in this commit, it will, but
I'm somewhat ambivalent about what makes more sense.

Michael Meyer bda0b3b807 Allow quest leader to catch and return unique item
It's been possible for a while to throw your quest artifact to your
quest leader, completing the quest (he will then throw the object back
to you). The quest leader will also react to being brought the Amulet
of Yendor (i.e. having it in inventory when you approach or #chat), but
tossing it over like the quest artifact was treated as a hostile act and
would cause the quest leader and guardians to become hostile and attack
the hero.

Make throwing the Amulet of Yendor at the quest leader work like
throwing the quest artifact, and treat the invocation items similarly
just in case people try throwing those (maybe because they are lost,
unsure what to do, and have already seen their quest leader catch and
react to the quest artifact -- regardless of the reason, throwing over
the Book of the Dead is almost certainly not intended to be an attack).
Doing so for invocation items will ID them but not do much more than
that. The Amulet of Yendor triggers the existing quest pager message.

Michael Meyer 9d7378ec57 Fix: undoing monsters' permablindness by accident
Monsters can become permanently blind (in very narrow circumstances -- I
think limited only to a very short-range camera flash), in which case
they have both mon->mblinded and mon->mcansee set to 0. Such
permanently blinded monsters can counterintuitively regain their sight
by being blinded a second time from a different source: for example, by
being hit with a cream pie. That second blinding will increase
mon->mblinded (which functions as a blindness timeout) by some amount,
and when it runs out the monster will regain its sight. Try to make
sure that doesn't happen by skipping any blinding attacks if the monster
has already been permanently blinded.

Michael Meyer 1dab134fce Fix: rising from the grave as a zombie
When the hero is killed by a zombie, she is supposed to arise from the
grave as a zombie of a type matching her race. Commit 580c5a6 broke
this inadvertently -- done_in_by was passing gy.youmonst.data to
zombie_form() and relying on the old behavior where it attempted to
include the hero's race in is_elf, is_orc, etc if the permonst matched
the hero's role. Because this no longer works, zombie_form was only
returning PM_HUMAN_ZOMBIE when passed the role permonst of an
unpolymorphed hero. Use gu.urace.zombienum instead. This would have to
be a little more sophisticated (falling back to zombie_form() if Upolyd)
if a polymorphed hero with unchanging could die via done_in_by but
that's not currently possible as far as I can tell.

Michael Meyer 38cda5ad52 Adjust seenres on visible gear removal
If a monster sees you remove some piece of gear that grants a
resistance, it will remove that resistance from its list of remembered
resistances and be willing to try attacking you with that adtyp again.
This avoids the situation where you put on a ring of cold, get hit with
one cold attack, and then can remove it because all the monsters nearby
will permanently remember you as being cold resistant (but even after
this change a wily hero could still step into a niche and do it without
any monsters seeing, so trick them into thinking she's still cold
resistant...). The hero could still be resistant if there were multiple
sources to begin with, of course, but the monsters will test it and
learn that again if necessary.

It's a little weird that the monsters can recognize the intrinsic
granted by the item being removed, but they display knowledge of
unidentified (by the hero) objects in many other circumstances too, so I
hope it's forgivable in the pursuit of having them act more cleverly
about resuming previously-resisted attacks like this. Another approach
that avoids the gear recognition, blanking seenres on any gear change,
can result in odd situations like orcs treating their own cloaks as
potential sources of many different resistances, which also seems silly.

Michael Meyer 9a5b6e8e77 Fix: name confusion after MB cancels shapeshifter
The cancellation effect of Magicbane can cause shapeshifters to change
to their base forms. Since the name of the monster being attacked is
cached earlier, the name used for subsequent messages from Mb_hit would
be outdated after this happened. For example, as encountered in a

Insert the new name into hittee[] if cancellation caused the targeted
monster to change form.

Some further application of e43ec0c logic, which was intended to fix odd
messages produced by obufs clobbered by inventory updates (like "the

lurking around because sortloot(), via sortloot_cmp(), was continuing to
call for obufs via loot_xname() without releasing them immediately. It
was going through the entire inventory doing that, much like
display_pickinv() was prior to Pat's fix in e43ec0ce, so could cause
the contents of obufs to still be clobbered by perm_invent updates.
This changes sortloot_cmp() to releases the obufs it calls for as soon
as possible so that won't happen any more.

Michael Meyer ab37888b36 Restore altar destruction from magical digging
Especially powerful magic is meant to be able to destroy altars
(breaking a wand of digging or using a drum of earthquake), but it was
being blocked by a check added to maketrap() in a7f6460 designed to
prevent wizard-mode trap wishing from overwriting stairs. The check was
refined in 6a3d82c to add an exception for digging up graves, but
continued to prevent the destruction of other types of
previously-destructible terrain.

Since this block was a side effect of an attempt to add some guard rails
to wizmode terrain wishes, and the code to explicitly permit the
destruction of other furniture with especially powerful magic is still
present, it doesn't seem like it was actually intended. Open up terrain
destruction by digging magic a bit more by excluding only
non-destructible terrain, not all furniture other than graves, from
being overwritten by pits and holes.

Also, use AM_SANCTUM to more precisely identify non-destructible high
altars in dig_check() rather than checking whether the hero is on the
Astral or Sanctum levels.

Michael Meyer 95b410ee94 Provide escape item in water-surrounded vaults
Water vaults are one of the few places that can/will generate completely
sealed off in a normal level. Other such spots are designed to provide
a guaranteed means of escape (vault guard, scrolls of teleportation in
niches, etc) -- water vaults were an exception that didn't do this, so a

where she had no choice but to wait to starve to death or #quit. Provide

Michael Meyer 2bb73b8fd8 Prevent curses 'More' (>>) from overwriting msg
In some scenarios where a message prompted a 'more' (in curses shown as
'>>'), the '>>' could overwrite the last one or two characters of the
message.

This could happen if a single message on its own was the length of the
message space minus 2 (e.g. for an 80 character terminal, "h - a concave
amulet named this is an amulet name, it is very long, and so on."), or
if an addition to an existing line brought it to the length of the
message space minus 1 or 2 (e.g. "You materialize on a different level!
You remember this level as testlevlname."). The two scenarios had
slightly different causes.

I think this fixes both of those scenarios. I believe this is the

Michael Meyer 3890491ef0 Fix: message when pet moves from water to eat
The <x,y> params of dog_eat are the pet's starting position that turn,
not necessarily the position of the object being eaten. If the pet is
doing a combined move-and-eat action, <x,y> will be its original spot,
but it will have already moved to <mtmp->mx,mtmp->my>, where the food
object also is.

The attempt to check whether the eating was happening out-of-sight
underwater (to suppress the message in that case) was checking the pet's
starting location, not its new location/the location of the food object.
So if a pet moved from water to land to eat something, the chowing-down
message would be improperly suppressed (and presumably the message for a
pet moving from land to water to eat would be improperly left
_un_suppressed, though I didn't actually try to reproduce that).

Michael Meyer 891a20f569 Fix: underwater vision update frequency
Underwater vision was updated only once per turn, so if the hero had
more than one move per turn it could cause some spots to be left behind
on the map. For example, after moving around underwater while very fast
for a while:

            }
          }}}
          }}}}
       }  }}@}
      }    }}}

Not only does the radius of vision appear to "smear" temporarily, but if
the hero moves fast enough, isolated spots can be left entirely behind
(since the normal underwater vision update only clears nearby spots, not
the entire map). Both these effects are visible in the example above.

The fix in this commit is to update the frequency of underwater vision
updates to "once-per-time-taken" rather than "once-per-turn", so that it
updates with every move. I'm not sure if it needs to happen more
frequently than that (i.e. in the "once-per-input" section) but I might
be overlooking something.

Also add missing punctuation to the message for applying a lamp
underwater.

Michael Meyer f38a40fafd Tweaks to chatting with mute shopkeeper
A mute shopkeeper shouldn't be able to verbally tell you the prices of
objects. For normal chatting, on the other hand, shk_chat can handle a
mute shopkeeper (by changing from speech to "indications" -- hand signs,
body language, etc), so allow execution to reach that even if the
shopkeeper is mute (in a silent polyform).

Also more generally allow a shopkeeper to continue chatting with normal
shopkeeper responses if polymorphed into another creature, since they
apparently retain their minds (are able to tell you prices, can
transact, etc).

This is mostly inspired by the fact shk_chat has extensive handling for
mute shopkeepers, but it was unreachable as far as I can tell. It is
also funny to think of a newt or something wriggling around to indicate
it's been making a lot of money lately.

Michael Meyer 15274fcca1 Make paralysis intefere with seduction attempts
tinklebear on IRC noticed that a hero paralyzed by a floating eye was
still "charmed" and capable of "removing her armor" as part of a nymph's
theft attack. The same thing was true of foocubus seduction: a
paralyzed hero was still able to respond to the questions about whether
particular pieces of armor should be removed (and also do whatever else
may be involved in a successful attack...).

I think paralysis should prevent both those things. Nymph theft will
still work, unless she needs the hero's active cooperation in removing a
bulky piece of armor. Foocubus attacks will be prevented entirely by
paralysis, making it interfere like unconsciousness already does.

Apply a similar constraint to hero vs monster seduction, as well.

Michael Meyer 05117fa84f Fix: billing shop boulder pushed thru shared wall
I realized that the "move the boulder billing to 'used-up items'" part
of 20392a6 didn't properly handle boulder movement from one shop to
another via a gap in a shared wall, becuase it wasn't looking at the
complete in_rooms() array (plus, it only triggered if the new spot
wasn't in any shops at all). When I tried to fix that, I realized that
stolen_value() was similarly not working reliably when passed a location
shared between two shops, and for the same reason: it was only using the
first character of the in_rooms() array.

I think this patch fixes both those things, but it would be worth
examining the change to stolen_value() carefully, to ensure getting the
roomno via the shkp won't change anything about its normal functioning.
I'm not totally sure about that -- I didn't notice any problems in some
brief tests of typical stolen_value() uses, but it seems like it
probably has some tricky edge cases.

At the very least, passing a boulder fully through a shared wall between
two shops one way, then back the other way, no longer triggers an unpaid
obj sanity check in my testing.

Michael Meyer eff2cba10d Use foo_simple_name for armor types in xname
This will distinguish between a hat and a helmet, shoes and boots, etc,
so that a "conical hat" doesn't turn into a "helmet called dunce" after
type-naming it, and so on. Instead, more specific names will be used
for the base type, consistent with the terms used in various messages
(so "a hat called dunce").

Some of these don't seem like necessary distinctions to make, and some
of them probably don't make a difference at all (e.g. gloves vs
gauntlets, since "gauntlets" only shows up once you've IDed the item so
the user-assigned typename isn't visible), but it probably makes sense
to be consistent in using these functions if it's done for any armor
type.

were accessed to see whether the "Brrooaa" message should be printed.
It also doesn't make much sense to print that message by the time you've
already fallen through a portal, trapdoor, etc, onto another level, so I
think moving it before the spoteffects() call kills two birds with one
stone.

[1] The highly specific circumstances: you must die due to illness or
some other timeout (or generally die on your own turn rather than the
monsters' turn, since this ensures the level change isn't deferred until
the end of the turn), while engulfed above a level teleporter [or maybe
another similar trap -- I tested with a level teleporter], and be
lifesaved, while positioned such that the engulfer can't follow you
through the levelport after expulsion (e.g. surrounded by other
monsters). It may happen under some other conditions too, but even if
so it's pretty rare and was tough to reproduce.

Michael Meyer 75ff2fa5fc Fix: use-after-free when fountain dipping
A potion of acid could be destroyed and freed by dipping into a
fountain, then dereferenced after the fact -- both when checking its
type immediately after the water_damage() call (as was noticed by
hackemslashem and amateurhour on IRC), and also in the later switch/case
a few lines further down in dipfountain().

I basically reversed the original 'er != ER_DESTROYED' test here: as it
was before this, I think the only thing that could hit it was a greased
potion of acid, which would survive the initial dip due to the grease.
Such a potion would be silently deleted. Potions of acid which were
actually destroyed by water_damage, on the other hand, could be allowed
to continue down to the switch/case of further effects (and associated
dereferences). I think this makes more sense in reverse, with potions
that were protected by grease actually being protected and producing
normal dip effects, and potions of acid which exploded causing an early
return with no further effects. This effectively prevents the various
use-after-free scenarios that were possible, too.

Michael Meyer 263e48c6f7 Tell player when water damage removes grease
This was totally silent, which -- at least for me -- has led to quite a
few cases of believing my bag or cloak is still greased when it actually
wore off the last time I took a dip. I think telling the player that
the grease has worn off would be helpful, and is consistent with other
types of water damage.

The message is printed even if you are blind, since that seems to be
true of all the other messages in water_damage(). I am not sure if that
makes complete sense (especially for ones like a scroll fading -- some
like water getting into a bag could be sensed by touch) but I didn't
change anything there.

Michael Meyer db4785b27f Don't leak ID of magic tools in charging prompt
The getobj prompt for charging was presenting any chargeable tool in the
hero's inventory as a suggested charging target, even tools which were
unidentified and undistinguishable from their mundane counterparts
(e.g. bag of tricks, magic harp, horn of plenty...). This leaked
information about the identity of these items and made it possible to
determine whether a generic 'harp' was magic or not.

When suggesting chargeable tools, include only those which are actually
known to be chargeable (unidentified or unseen chargeable tools can
still be selected, they just won't be suggested targets). Basically the
same as what's done for a potion of oil in the apply prompt.
