9d71c8e1f4 Sunsword #invoke, directed at self
Give a resistance animation if you #invoke Sunsword while it's
wielded and direct its blinding ray at yourself.  Flashing a camera
at a monster who is wielding it will also produce the animation.

eb22a81088 Refactor, unify, and nerf item destruction
Note: Original change is from xNetHack by copperwater <aosdict@gmail.com>,
      but this commit comes from HACKEM-MUCHE by Erik Lunna, with
      some minor code formatting.

From xNetHack commit a0a6103bea:

'The original goal: nerf item destruction using a method I initially
 proposed for SpliceHack, in which the number of items subject to
 damage from any single source is limited by the amount of damage the
 effect caused. The intent was to be more fair all around and prevent
 aggravating situations where, for instance, a chest shock trap zaps
 you for 4 damage and immediately ten of your rings and wands blow up.

 Problem 1: no easy way to limit the items destroyed without biasing
 heavily towards the start of the invent chain. The old code was able
 to get away without bias by just indiscriminately destroying
 everything eligible with a 1/3 chance. Here, I had to introduce
 reservoir sampling in a somewhat more complex form than I've applied
 it elsewhere, since there are a pool of potential items.

 Problem 2: destroy_item no longer worked remotely like destroy_mitem,
 which still destroyed 1/3 of items indiscriminately. Commence the
 process of squishing them into one function that handles both the
 player and monsters. (Which required making a lot of adjustments to
 destroy_one_item, now named maybe_destroy_item, on nits such as
 messaging and when to negate damage. An annoying consequence of the
 merge is that in the player case, their HP is deducted and they can
 be killed directly, but for monsters they need to add up the
 destruction damage and return it.)

 Unifying destroy_item and destroy_mitem has some advantages: in
 addition to the obvious code duplication removal, it ensures monsters
 now take the same damage as players for destruction (previously they
 took a piddly 1 damage per destroyed item). Now when you hit
 something with Mjollnir and their coveted wand of death breaks apart
 and explodes, you at least get the satisfaction of knowing they took
 the standard amount of damage from it.  Monsters also now get
 symmetry with players in having extrinsic elemental resistance
 protect them from item destruction, and damage negation from item
 destruction if they were appropriately resistant.

 Problem 3: a lot of callers didn't preserve the "amount of incoming
 damage" that this refactor relies on. E.g. if the defender resisted
 that element, the local dmg variable would be set to 0. So I had to
 do some wrangling with callers to save that original damage
 value. The rule of thumb is: all *incoming* damage counts. So that
 includes the player's spellcasting bonus if applicable, but not
 things like half damage, negation due to resistance, or extra damage
 due to being vulnerable to cold/fire.

 Then I figured, while I'm here let's get rid of all those silly cases
 where destroy_items is called multiple times for various different
 object classes, and cut the object class parameter out of it. This
 has a few minor effects:

 - Places where different object classes previously rolled
   independently for destruction to happen at all now roll
   once. (Which, by my calculation, generally means less incidences of
   destruction - a fire attack now won't have three separate chances
   to hit your scrolls, potions, and spellbooks. On the flip side, a
   lucky roll will no longer save an entire object class in your
   inventory.)

 - Callers can no longer specify different probabilities for
   destroying different object classes. The only place this was really
   used was to call destroy_item with a slightly lower probability on
   SPBOOK_CLASS.  With the nerf in this commit, less of them ought to
   be destroyed anyway.

 - A very edge case of where explosion-vs-monster damage was totted up
   differently for golems, which could result in differences of a hit
   point here or there.

 - All object classes being processed in one go means that less items
   are destroyed than would be if they were still processed
   independently.  This is not really visible compared to the old
   baseline of just destroying 33% of everything, but would be a
   marked difference versus a copy of the game that still called
   destroy_items separately for different object classes. To
   compensate, I adjusted my planned damage-to-destruction-limit
   scaling factor down from 8 to 5.

 Not done: merging in ignite_items(), though that would probably be
 really easy now.'

Notes from porting from xNetHack:

- It might be necessary to reexamine at all the conditional checks for
calling destroy_items. Because item destruction is much more
restrained and uses the actual damage from an effect, we might now
need to check 'if (!rn2(3))' and similar in all the places item
destruction occurs.

6b8079a16f secondary damage for monster spell attacks
Have monster spells
| "shower of missiles" (AT_MAGC+AD_MAGM: Angels, Yeenoghu)
scuff an engraving at the hero's spot if there is one,
| "frost" (AT_MAGC+AD_COLD: only Asmodeus)
freeze water and lava terrain,
| "flames" (AT_MAGC+AD_FIRE: moot, no monster has this attack)
burn items on the floor at the hero's spot and melt ice terrain,
| "pillar of flame" (AT_MAGC+AD_CLRC+randomly chosen clerical spell)
which already burns floor items, melt ice too, and
| "lightning" (same casters as pillar of flame)
give a tiny chance of destroying iron bars.  The chance to hit bars
is low and the hero has to be targeted while located on an iron bars
spot so probably won't happen before the sun burns out, but only
needed one extra line of code.

Only the first two have been thoroughly tested.

dc8d9d6cd0 Accessibility: Add location info to messages
Adds a new boolean option, accessiblemsg.  If on, some game messages
are prefixed with direction or location information, for example:

   (west): The newt bites!
   (northwest): You find a hidden door.

I added the info to the most common messages, but several are
still missing it.

8fa53d6ac5 Adjust seenres when observed attack succeeds
If a monster sees an elemental attack succeed from some other creature
or environmental danger, it will be willing to try those attacks again.

b5a43a60f2 Asmodeus' cold magic attack when hero is resistant
Asmodeus kept using the cold magic attack when hero was cold resistant.
The distance magic attack already considered hero resistances, so
use the same logic for the close-up magic attack.

4021a63bcf wand/spell/breath killer reason
Extend "killed by the touch of death inflicted by <monster>" to buzz().
"Killed by a bolt of cold" becomes "killed by a bolt of cold zapped by
<monster>" or "killed by a blast of cold" becomes "killed by a blast
of cold exhaled by <monster>" and so forth.

More work than expected; the zap code isn't passed enough context.

BZ_M_WAND() was producing the wrong value for wands zapped by monsters.

b3d5158e64 git issue #994 - killed by a touch of death
Issue reported by vultur-cadens:  cause of death reason for touch
of death and death due to loss of strength only showed the cause,
not the monster spellcaster who was responsible.

This changes
|Killed by a touch of death.
to
|Killed by the touch of death inflicted by the Wizard of Yendor.
and
|Killed by terminal fraility.
to
|Killed by strength loss inflicted by a chameleon imitating an arch-lich.
(The 'imitating' part doesn't fit on the tombstone but will be present
in logfile/xlogfile.)

Noticed while implemented this:  touch of death was modifying u.uhpmax
and basing death vs damage on that even when hero was polymorphed.
It now rehumanizes the hero in that situation.

fbd9a7bae8 another update to the soundlib interface
sound_verbal(char *text, int32_t gender, int32_t tone, int32_t vol,
             int32_t moreinfo);
    -- NetHack will call this function when it wants to pass text of
       spoken language by a character or creature within the game.
    -- text is a transcript of what has been spoken.
    -- gender indicates MALE or FEMALE sounding voice.
    -- tone indicates the tone of the voice.
    -- vol is the volume (1% - 100%) for the sound.
    -- moreinfo is used to provide additional information to the soundlib.
    -- there may be some accessibility uses for this function.

It may be useful for accessibility purposes too.

A preliminary implementation has been attempted for macsound to test
the interface on macOS. No tinkering of the voices has been done.

Use of the test implementation requires the following at build time with make.
    WANT_SPEECH=1
That needs to be included on the make command line to enable the test code,
otherwise just the interface update is compiled in.

I don't know for certain when AVSpeechSynthesizer went into macOS, but older versions
likely don't support it, and would just leave off the WANT_SPEECH=1.

If built with WANT_SPEECH=1, the 'voices' NetHack option needs to be enabled.

It was a bit strange, when I first started up the test, to hear Asidonhopo,
the shopkeeper, talking to me as I entered his shop and interacted with him.

8bbe9282aa add soundeffects hooks to core
Insert the calls to trigger a number of potential soundeffects
into the core.

If no additional soundlib support is integrated into the
build, then the Soundeffect macro (sndprocs.h) expands to nothing:

into the build, then the Soundeffect macro gets defined as this
in sndprocs.h:

That macro definition checks for the hero not being Deaf; it checks
to ensure that the active soundlib interface has a non-null
sound_soundeffect() function pointer; and it checks to ensure
that the active soundlib interface has declared that it supports
soundeffects by setting the SNDCAP_SOUNDEFFECTS bit in its sndcap
entry. That just means that the interface routines are prepared to
accept and deal with the calls from the core, whether or not it
actually produces the desired soundeffect.

02a48aa8cf split g into multiple structures
The consolidation of global variables from scattered source
files into decl.c and declared in decl.h was begun in 3.7.0.
Their placement in common files was done for centralized
initialization and potential re-initialization during a
"play again" scenario.

It wasn't really necessary for all of them to be housed in a
single huge structure to meet the "play again" requirement,
and the single huge structure has been a little unwieldy when
it comes to maintenance.

Following this commit, instead of one single extremely large structure
named 'g' to house all of the relocated global variables, they
are distributed into several ga through gz.

To make things easy for the developer, each variable is placed
into the struct corresponding to the starting letter of the variable.
That way, no lookup is required in order to know which struct houses
a particular variable, it is a simple match to the starting letter
for all the centralized global variables.

A global variable named 'amulets', would be found in ga.
    ga.amulets
     ^ ^
A global varable named 'move', would be found in gm.
    gm.moves
     ^ ^
A global variable named 'val_for_n_or_more' would be found in gv.
    gv.val_for_n_or_more

b01fd1b849 PR #862 - try XLII
When strength loss is so big as to cause HP damage, but reduce
strength if the damage causes hero to revert to normal form.  There's
no point in adjusting strength before rehumanization and not fair to
do so afterward.

Also, validate strength and its intended adjustment before doing
anything else.  (Just paranoia; there's no reason to suspect that any
bad data ever gets passed in.)

70fe2ce5cd Don't make callers responsible for losestr death
Remove callers' responsibility to deal with possible hero death when
calling losestr.  This is less fragile and error-prone than leaving it
in the caller's hands, but it means that death from the monster spell
'weaken target' no longer goes through done_in_by, and the death reason
is no longer "killed by <monster name>".

...could leave hero in creature form with negative u.mh

losestr can subtract HP, but doesn't directly kill its target.  The
caller is responsible for possibly killing the hero if losestr reduces
her HP to 0 or lower; most callers do this by combining losestr with a
losehp call, which can kill off the hero if necessary.

MGC_WEAKEN_YOU calls done_in_by if u.uhp < 1 after losestr, but didn't
handle the Upolyd u.mh case, so could leave a polymorphed hero with
negative health.  Add a rehumanize call in that case.

This could also be done by changing losestr to call losehp itself for
the HP loss it deals out, but this would interfere with
cast_wizard_spell's use of done_in_by to generate the death reason:
either all strength loss is described one way ("terminal frailty" or
something -- not great) or else losestr must be passed a death reason
and is described a different way than other attack spells (because it
wouldn't go through done_in_by).

If the summon nasties spell creates a single monster, the feedback
changes from "Monsters appear" to "A monster appears" but if you
were invisible or displaced it still said "around".  Avoid
| A monster appears around a spot near you!
or

d713c1826b Buzz macros and related stuff
Add macros to convert AD_foo, WAN_foo, and SPE_foo to relative values
for passing to BZ_U_foo and BZ_M_foo macros.

Change some return values in monster spellcasting function from
magic numbers to MM_MISS or MM_HIT.

Make buzzmu consider hero resistances - previously the
monster with innate zapping ray (Angels and Asmodeus) would
just keep doing that attack, but they will now just curse if
it saw the hero resist the attack.

122634ec9e Hallucinatory rays
When hallucinating, use nonsensical names for the rays
(wands, spells, and breath weapons), and random ray glyphs.

e4e65c4b8b whitelist several non-literal format strings
djgpp cross-compiler was griping about several.

This also removes these lines from sys/unix/hints/include/compiler.370.
    CFLAGS+=-Wno-format-nonliteral
    CCXXFLAGS+=-Wno-format-nonliteral

-Wformat-nonliteral should not be incompatible with the printf
argument-checking capabilities on literal format strings and there

48bca11d67 Accessibility: give message for created monsters
Always give a message when creating a detected monster
during gameplay (as opposed to during level creation).
To prevent the message, use the MM_NOMSG flag for makemon.

Most places already handled their own messaging, but there
were some, such as bag of tricks, create monster magic
and random monsters created during gameplay that didn't.

16105ad0d5 Change touch of death from instadeath to maxhp reduction and damage
Touch of death will now do 50 + 8d6 damage, and drain max HP for half
of that. If the drain is equal or greater than your max HP, then it
will kill you instantly.

If monsters see you resist something, generally elemental or magical
attack, or if they see you reflect an attack, they learn that and
will adjust their attack accordingly.

6a35a84c56 Fire sources can ignite candles, lamps, and potions of oil
... on the floor, in monster inventory, and in hero's inventory.

Items in your inventory being ignited produce a message even if you're
blind - you can see the lit-state by viewing inventory anyway, so just
give player the message.

8a91a22df9 fix issue #351 - summoned critters while Hallu
If a monster uses the 'summon insects' spell (which will resort to
snakes if all 'a' class critters are genocided or extinct) while the
hero is hallucinating, report the summoning of something unusual
rather than of insects or snakes.  I bypassed "random creature"
direct to "hallucinatory creature" for the something unusual.

Fixes #351

2ebbe61f53 fix github issue #285 - spellcasting monster
After casting a spell, a monster got a chance to make a regular attack
despite the apparent attempt to set up a return value indicating that
it wouldn't move.

When looking over the return value situation, I noticed 'wormhitu()'
for the first time.  It gives worms additional attacks when the hero
is adjacent to some of the tail, that only works if the head is within
reach of a melee attack.  The hidden tail segment at head's location
always met that criterium so gave an extra attack that didn't make
sense; change wormhitu() to skip that segment.

Do some formatting in mcastu.c; no change in actual code there.

8cf70f7771 fix github issue 217 - monster spellcasting feedback
Fixes #217

Feedback when spellcasting monster aimed at the wrong spot due to not
being able to see an invisible hero only gave the intended message if
hero couldn't see self.  The code was using 'if (Invisible)' which
checks whether the hero is invisible and can't see invisible, when it
should have been using 'if (Invis)' which just tests whether the hero
is invisible.

It wouldn't surprise if the same problem occurs elsewhere.  Those
macros are rather error prone.

The issue report mentions that one of the affected messages might be
unreachable.  I didn't investigate that.
