5f56440956 instead of BETA or not, have devel states of release, wip, beta
Now that development sources are made public prior to
BETA testing, it is useful to have a work-in-progress
state prior to BETA.

a08c0ed2ab VMS update
Long overdue. Install.vms ought to be rewritten from scratch but that
will probably never happen.

6c114640f5 some system-specific adjustments for RNG routines
move some system-specific seed-related stuff from hacklib.c to
a system-specific source file and #define SYS_RANDOM_SEED to
utilize it during build.

Windows changes for random seed generation using
crypto next gen (CNG) api routines.

Corresponding vms changes due to disentangling of VMS and
unix when the unix seed bits got moved (untested).

4ee6b13033 vmsbuild.com update
A copyright header inserted last spring uses the wrong format for a
DCL comment and triggers a couple of warnings about invalid commands.

Some linker hackery added a long time ago draws complaints from the
linker on IA64. This was noticed during the release cycle for 3.6.0
but then went unaddressed.

6839ad3faa more vms (vmsbuild.com vs monstr.c)
Apparently I exited emacs without saving and the revised vmsbuild.com
ended up as a backup file that 'git nhadd' wouldn't see. This was
supposed to be included in the patch committed several hours ago....

6ecf97f6e3 vms build/install update
New-ish files 'engrave', 'epitaph', and 'bogusmon' added for 3.6.0
were not handled by playground setup. NetHack runs without them so
limited testing didn't notice.

Add 'makedefs -s' to build them and include them in installed files.

Also, remove 'makedefs -m' and obsolete monstr.c.

687902d3ff fix #H4240 - linking on VAX/VMS
First reported two years ago, then again this week by someone else
who didn't go through the web contact page (so no new #H number or
bugzilla entry). Using vmsbuild.com to build on VAX complains about
not being able to resolve a bunch of functions--it's basically
trying to build the full program using only the code supplied by
sys/vms/vmsmain.c. The original report mentioned a workaround and
was also dealing with a second issue (already fixed post-3.6.0) that
I incorrectly guessed was responsible for the linking problem. This
report had the correct linker magic to fix the linking issue.

I'm still not sure whether the order of /Library and /Include after
the name of an object library file on a LINK command line matters.
In a linker options file, which vmsbuild.com constructs and uses,
/Include needs to come first so that the contents of the library are
searched after the explicitly included object modules are processed.

Building with the Makefiles (using DEC's MMS or some versions of
freeware MMK) doesn't collect the object files into a library so was
never affected by this. And the linker options ordering issue is
apparently specific to the VAX/VMS linker; vmsbuild.com run on Alpha
and on IA64 linked 3.6.0 successfully without this fix.

1eca824321 Add sysconf BONES_POOLS to allow more bones-files per level
Reduce the chance of a player playing on a public server encountering
their own bones, by implementing separate bones pools. The pool a player
belongs to is determined at game start, and only bones in that pool
are used. The sysconf BONES_POOLS allows the sysadmin to define how
many pools there are.

9c6e5a0563 dat/keyhelp for vms
Update vms/install.com (rather than Makefile.top) to install the new
data file for the 'whatdoes' command.

Also, the 3.6.0 distribution puts version number 3.5.0 into vms
binaries (all the programs, not just nethack itself). It's something
observable with native tools without running the program, nothing to
do with nethack's 'v' command which gets its version number from
patchlevel.h via makedefs.

928be29dd1 Makefile.utl dependency bug for dlb.o
For make install or update, dlb.o was being recompiled unnecessarily
when building util/dlb because the dependency in Makefile.utl listed
hack.h instead of config.h for it. Then attempting to run nethack
under debugger control could cause debugger complaints about dlb.o
being newer than nethack.

Updated for unix and vms.

ebdfafb42d sys/vms/*.c - mostly reformatting
I'm not sure whether basic formatting cleanup belongs in 3.6.1, but
there are also a couple of strings that got split and require the
implicit concatenation of adjacent string literals introduced with
C89/C90. The code itself compiles with pre-ANSI compilers, or at
least used to--most of it was developed with one....

Much of it is tabs in comments. But there was one substantive item:
an obsolete reference to "use 'Q' to Quit" after however many years....

544315eaac add missing sys/vms/sysconf
SYSCF is enabled by default, but nethack won't run without the required
sysconf file. sys/vms/install.com expects to find a template one in
sys/vms/sysconf so create that.

Since the tarball will need repackaging, fix a comment typo (dyslexic
spelling of "nymph") in sys/unix/sysconf. Also, move DEBUGFILES to the
bottom so that more useful entries move up. And expand the comment for
the PANICTRACE options.

918ed61d9f From KevinS: sys/vms/Install.vms
This could use a bit of reformatting. I stripped off trailing spaces
from a handful of lines but otherwise have kept it as is since the
formatting issue is minor.

493027cbc8 sysconf update
Add missing 'sysconf' to sys/unix/ and sys/winnt/ sections of Files.

Update sys/unix/sysconf; I started out just to remove the duplicate
DEBUGFILES entry but ended up expanding several of the comments too.

Also, fix a typo in the vms build/install instructions.

ef2a6e6f1b make depend
dungeon.o depending on lev.h is the only change found by 'make depend'.
(I'm a bit suspicious about that.)

I haven't attempted to reconcile the vms Makefiles with the Unix ones,
just put in this one new dependency. I know vms/Makefile.src lacks
handling for sys/share/*regex.c and vms/Makefile.top and install.com
both lack handling for 'sysconf'.

aa729ca956 README and dat/history update
README - add VMS back as a tested platform; thanks KevinS!
dat/history - add VMS update, remove trailing whitespace, two spaces;
  instead of just one (recently added stuff) for sentence separation;
sys/vms/Install.vms - minimal update;
Files - reformat the win32 project section to fit within 80 columns.

27efe608d7 VMS update from KevinS (2 of 2: sys/vms)
Update the command procedure that can be used to compile and link
everything. The sys/vms Makefiles still need updating.

I added 'tribute' to the command procedure used to create and populate
the plaground directory but am not able to test it.

8b57d96fd2 Reformat .h files.
I did my best to exempt some of the bigger aligned blocks from the reformatting
using the /* clang-format off */ and /* clang-format on */ tags. Probably some
that shouldn't have been formatted were anyway; if you encounter them, please
fix.

The clang-format tags were left in on the basis that it's much easier to prune
those out later than to put them back in, and it means that, modulo my custom
version of clang-format, I should be able to run clang-format on the source tree
again without changing anything, now that Pat has fixed the VA_DECL issues.
