Michael Meyer 51d568319b Use const char * for read_simplemail 'mbox' param
Nothing about read_simplemail is incompatible with using const, and the
lack of const required some contortions (copying ADMIN_SERVER_MSG to
another buffer with nonconst() to prevent a compiler warning).

This was the last place nonconst() was used, so I removed it.

Michael Meyer b18d768b26 Some minor read_simplemail improvements
Make admin message use urgent_pline so it's less likely to be skipped
and inadvertently missed, make ending punctuation conditional on message
itself not containing any (similar to what's done for T-shirt messages
in read.c), guard against printing an empty message (from a line like
"name:\n"; it does mean that subsequent messages in a single batch will
be discarded, but that's true of the existing guard against malformed
lines as well, and it should make the overwriting of characters past the
'msg' ptr safer).

Michael Meyer 93842fbb1b Fix: overwriting stairs in movement tests
Like some of the other coordinates in testmove.lua (addressed in
70008fc), the attempt to overwrite the stairs was targeting a spot
one space to the left of the actual position of the stairs, causing it
to have no effect (discussion suggested this may have been a result of
99715e0). Update it so the stairs are properly erased and won't
interfere with movement tests by stopping a running/rushing hero early.

Michael Meyer a345fc8dfb Fix: levelport by name to unconnected branch
(unconnected to the current dungeon branch, that is)

Level teleporting allows you to type in the name of a level instead of
its number. This normally only works for levels within your current
dungeon branch (main dungeon <-> Gehennom levelports are the exception):
entering "medusa" as a destination won't work while the hero is in the
Gnomish Mines, but it will work fine to get to the Medusa level from
elsewhere in the main dungeon.

Teleporting to a particular branch entrance didn't apply the same
restriction. The teleport would still happen even if the destination
branch was unreachable from the current branch, and in such a case the
game would just try to get the hero to the depth of the branch entrance,
within the current branch. For example, entering "quest" as a
destination within the Gnomish Mines would bring the hero to Mines' End,
since that's the closest depth-wise it's possible to get to the quest
portal level. Apply the same rules to branch entrances as exist for
named levels, excluding destinations that are unreachable from the
current branch.

Michael Meyer fe04b4a632 Move 'major events' section in dumplog
The sections of the dumplog can be broadly organized into two
categories: 'current state' and 'game overview'. Current state includes
information about what exactly was happening when the game ended: the
map, recent messages, current inventory, and current attributes. Game
overview is more like a history of the game up to that point: vanquished
monsters, extinct species, conducts, and dungeon overview.

All the current state sections are listed first, followed by the game
overview sections -- I'm not sure if this was a deliberate move to break
the dumplog into two distinct 'chapters', but it's convenient for
readers who may only want to know the circumstances of a death without
seeing the nitty-gritty details of the entire game up to that point.

The one section that wasn't ordered with its category was major events,
which was positioned near the top of the 'current state' group, above
the inventory listing. This commit moves it into the 'game overview'
group. I put it at the top, since it can serve as a sort of summary of
the game for those who are interested but don't care about some of the
details of monsters killed, etc.

Michael Meyer e05f326d1c Add makesingular to test_src
There are already pretty solid tests of makeplural, so add some in the
other direction, since it's similarly complicated and has to implement
many of the same special cases and exceptions in the other direction. I
originally tried just running the makeplural tests backwards to this
end, but several of them are tests to guarantee already-plural words
aren't further pluralized, so are not reversible.

Michael Meyer 3f3f530e43 Fix: test_src -eaux plurals
These plurals (e.g. "gateau" -> "gateaux") were added to makeplural and
makesingular in 0c0262e, so the test was outdated and failed. I also
added another test for "Federal Bureau of Investigation", since 'bureau'
is an exception to the -eau rule (pluralizes as 'bureaus') and the
exception was originally implemented in a way that would have caused the
"Federal Bureau of Investigation" test to fail -- so it seems like a
good pitfall to test for.

Michael Meyer 70008fc684 Fix: movement tests
Movement tests weren't working because terrain was being positioned one
square to the left of where it was expected, and the error message
printed something other than the expected coordinates.

I wasn't able to figure out why they were like this in the first place
(referring to one spot to the left of the hero with <u.ux-2, u.uy>), so
it's quite possible that I am missing some context here, but the test
failed consistently for me before making these changes, and now works.

Michael Meyer 719a85f37c Allow lua test files to call error()
Enable 'debugging' function calls, including error(), from the lua files
called by the wizard-mode #wizloadlua command. Without enabling them,
calling error() still produces an error but with a message like
"attempt to call a nil value (global 'error')" instead of the one
specified in the lua file.

I think this is the right way to do this without just enabling
everything across the board (which I assume would contradict the goals
of NHL_SANDBOX), but I will admit to being a little confused by trying
to understand exactly how the sandbox permissions work, so it's possible
this isn't the right solution.

Incidentally, I am probably misunderstanding this, but considering a lua
error still occurs when error() is called, just with a different error
message, is the function really "disabled" successfully by NHL_SANDBOX?

Michael Meyer cee6c9a919 Fix: engulf/digest intrinsic granting
Engulfing pets were getting a double chance to get an intrinsic from a
digestion attack, because they got the mon_givit call in mhitm_ad_dgst
and then also the one in mdamagem.

There is a bit of inconsistency here, in that mhitm_ad_dgst requires
corpse creation to grant nutrition, but the non-nutrition effects of
eating a corpse like polymorph, extra health, etc, in mdamagem don't
have any such requirement. As a result, one of the mon_givit calls
required a corpse to be "created" before granting an intrinsic, and the
other didn't. In choosing which one to remove, I figured intrinsic
granting is probably closer to those special effects than providing
nutrition (and also putting it in mhitm_ad_dgst is not ideal w/r/t
message ordering: it causes the 'intrinsic granted' message to appear
before the monster kill message).

Michael Meyer 66e98e1344 Don't describe sleep explosion as a "ray"
When breaking a wand of sleep, don't print the message "the sleep ray
hits you!" since it produces an area effect/explosion rather than a ray.
For a couple other wands, !ordinary (wand breakage) effects don't
produce a message (I assume because the do_break_wand feedback is
considered sufficient), but I put in an alternative message for the
explosion since I think it's important to inform the player the hero has
fallen asleep.

Michael Meyer 8a549b0a60 Shopkeepers hold a grudge against past thieves
When you steal from a shop, its shopkeeper will remember you as a thief
and charge you higher prices in the future (as well as be more curt and
less polite in interactions with you, though not outright hostile) even
if you pacify them, or die on the level and revisit it later as a bones
file. This was an idea aosdict had, and I think it makes sense that a
shopkeeper doesn't forgive and forget, immediately returning to treating
you exactly like anyone else, just because you were terrorized into
paying her back. Paying a shopkeeper off may cause her to stop actively
attacking you, but it feels like she'd have her eye on you as a known
thief going forward (and maybe would hang up a sign with your picture,
saying something like "DO NOT ACCEPT CHECKS FROM THIS HERO").

This surchage already existed, but since it was tied to active anger
(which typically causes a shopkeeper to quickly abandon their shop to
follow you) it was somewhat rare to see it in action.

I did not implement it here, but one possible further tweak might be to
clear the surcharge if the shopkeeper is pacified via taming magic
(which more-or-less magically brainwashes the target to feel positively
towards the hero) but not if you simply pay your debts.

Michael Meyer 94e8141c01 Fix: lookaround trap detection
Whether a trap exists is independent on the underlying terrain type, so
putting a check for traps in a block structured like

| if (IS_ROCK(levl[x][y].typ) || levl[x][y].typ == ROOM)
| ; /* do nothing */
| else if (levl[x][y].typ == CORR)
|     do_corridor();
| else if ((trap = t_at(x, y)))
|     avoid_trap(trap);

would mean that the check for traps only happens on terrain other than
normal room and corridor spots. As a result, it wasn't being evaluated
in most places where traps might actually occur.

Move the test for traps outside of the terrain type evaluation if/else
series, so that it happens independent of terrain (and remove the
'continue' so it doesn't preclue evaluation of the terrain).

Once the rule actually started coming into play, it became clear the
avoid_moving_on_trap message was being printed in cases where the hero
didn't actually stop (i.e. shift-dir runmode, the "if you must" case),
so I also modified the value for that parameter so it will match the
situations where the hero stops running.

Michael Meyer ce0107aff9 Restore old behavior for running onto trap
The refactor of domove made it impossible to run onto a trap (or water,
if blind), even in the shift-dir mode where the hero is meant to stop
only upon "hitting a wall or running into something". I use this
runmode to sprint large distances across the map, and the change to this
behavior meant that it was no longer possible to press shift-dir again
to continue past the trap. This restores the old behavior of allowing
shift-dir running to carry you onto a trap (though the hero will still
stop before hitting a trap in less breakneck runmodes).

Michael Meyer 9d28a8dc76 Update lit corridor display if dark_room toggled
The dark_room option determines whether remembered but unseen waslit
corridor spaces are displayed with S_litcorr or not. When it is
disabled, a remembered permanently-lit corridor spot will be shown
as "lit corridor" when out of sight. When it is enabled,
corridors are only shown as lit if they are currently in view.

Toggling this option was not immediately refreshing how corridors on the
map were displayed: an unseen spot shown as a lit corridor because
dark_room was disabled would continue to be shown as a lit corridor
when it was toggled on, until the hero's memory was refreshed by
visiting the spot and then leaving.

Slightly extend the existing function for updating how room spaces are
displayed when dark_room is toggled so that it will update the glyph
used for unseen lit corridors in a similar way.

Michael Meyer c2393344b7 Don't show corridors as lit in #terrain
Because back_to_glyph assumes the hero can directly see the spot, when
used for #terrain (e.g. when a spot was covered by a remembered object)
it would display corridors as lit if lit_corridor was enabled. Instead
of trying to suppress back_to_glyph's S_litcorr result only under
circumstances where it would be unusual, just show all corridor spots
with S_corr, so that none of them appear as "lit corridor". This
is consistent with what is already done for room spots for #terrain
(S_darkroom is forced to the basic S_room across the board).

Michael Meyer ddce73502e Improve feedback for trying to bribe the watch
Members of the watch can never be bribed, no matter how much gold is
thrown at them, but when a bribe was attempted they would say "that's
not enough" (implying incorrectly some higher amount would be enough to
pacify them). Also, an already-peaceful mercenary would take on an
unusually aggressive tone when given any amount of gold, giving the
player the same message to "beat it" as when a bribe succeeds in
pacifying them.

Adjust the mercenary bribery code a bit so that a more friendly message
is given if the monster is already peaceful, and so that unbribeable
monsters don't imply they are just not being given enough gold. I think
the actual effects of bribery shouldn't be affected by this commit, just
the messages/feedback.

Michael Meyer 9c9a8ff797 Fix: m-prefix looting a container
Using #loot with the 'm' prefix would claim there was nothing to loot
even if the hero was standing on a box, as long as there was no adjacent
monster. 'm' prefix is an explicit request to select a direction so
make it work regardless of whether a monster is there. Once I did that
I noticed that it was providing no feedback for using '.' or '>' as the
direction if no container was available, so adjust that to give the
"there is nothing here to loot" feedback.

Michael Meyer 2b51a22c6c Fix: command counts greater than 2
Entering a count to repeat an action stopped working for counts greater
than 2 after 93db2a8: the unconditional call to reset_cmd_vars at the
top of rhack was resetting many more variables than had previously been
cleared at that point, including g.multi (which in this context tracks
how many more times the requested action should be repeated). As a
result any count would perform the requested action twice at most.
Reduce the list of variables zeroed out at the start of rhack back to
what it was before 93db2a8.

Michael Meyer 76d9d65884 Fix: get_count and altmeta
M-<key> shortcuts with altmeta enabled weren't working when preceded by
a count (e.g. 2 M-j for "jump twice"): g.program_state.getting_a_command
determined whether <esc> should be read as staring a potential meta key
combination, and was being reset by readchar on the first digit entered
without being reactivated for subsequent input. As a result, by the
time the player entered the actual command to be modified by the count,
readchar wasn't bothering to look for M-<key> sequences.

Michael Meyer a18859ddb5 Let fleeing monsters dig pits in undiggable floor
When the hero zaps a wand of digging down in an undiggable level, it
creates a pit. When a fleeing monster did the same thing, it had no
effect. Bring this closer to the behavior experienced by the hero: if a
monster tries to use a wand of digging to create a hole in an undiggable
floor, a pit will be made (and the monster will fall into it, if not a
flyer).

Michael Meyer 8fe02be5ae Fix: getpos cmap vs typ/glyph confusion
When some parts of getpos were rearranged in 7404597, tests of terrain
types and glyphs were moved to a loop which iterated through the defsyms
array without being updated to handle cmap values instead. Consequently
they weren't excluding certain terrain types from being 'jumped to' as
intended. (Though it seems as though they actually worked by chance to
some extent, just because there's some overlap between terrain types and
defsyms in terms of where the 'walls/doors' blocks start and end.)

I also noticed that cmap_to_type was missing S_darkroom (it fell through
to the default case so that the function returned STONE), so I added it.

Michael Meyer ac0d6a98ce Prevent amorphous mon from carrying hero into door
An amorphous engulfer like a fog cloud could engulf the hero, then carry
him into a closed door. If it was killed or decided to spit out the
hero, he would be left occupying the same spot as a closed/locked door.
Make an amorphous monster unable to move into a door if currently
engulfing the hero.

Something more complicated could be done along the lines of allowing the
move if the hero is himself in an amorphous polyform, but that verges on
being a little too silly, maybe.

I also included fixes to a couple miscellaneous, unrelated formatting
issues that I noticed recently.

Stair dlevels weren't being restored with the correct values when

Michael Meyer 3e38c720ad Don't describe 'more info' prompt in #glance help
When using #glance, the player is never prompted about whether she wants
'more info' about something on the map, even if flags.help is true and
she has pressed '.' -- the 'more info' prompt is exclusive to #whatis.
getpos_help already changed its description of '.' based on whether
'help' was on or off; adjust those criteria so that the description of
the 'more info' prompt is only included for #whatis, where it is
actually relevant.

I recently looked at the help while using #glance and got confused
about why the 'more info' prompt was never appearing, so hopefully this
should help forestall that sort of thing. #glance also prompts only
once, so there's some other information about "moving to another spot"
in the help text which is not relevant -- that could definitely be
addressed as well but I think it's less likely to be confusing, so I
didn't bother with it in this commit.

Michael Meyer 59cf69085a Fix: non-swimming pets eating underwater food
Commit 32234b1d in 2003 mentioned in its commit message that pet dragons
shouldn't be able to eat underwater food items. This was mostly true:
non-swimming pets wouldn't select underwater food as a goal, and
wouldn't spend an action eating something unreachable on their current
position. But the "combined eat and move" case in dog_move didn't check
could_reach_item, so if a non-swimming pet happened to move to a spot
with underwater food for some reason, they could eat it on that turn
anyway. This commit should close this loophole and prevent non-swimming
monsters from eating underwater food (or other unreachable food) even if
they happen to fly over its position.

Michael Meyer d5232c7693 allow_category: honor 'goldX' more consistently
A comment in allow_category states that if gold is explicitly selected
as a category, it should be included in the results regardless of what
other BUCX filters may have also been applied. That makes sense to me:
there's only one thing in the gold category, and it always has the same
BUCX status, so it's pointless to try to "filter" the gold category with
a BUCX filter. Considering it a "also add gold, on top of the filtered
results" category adds utility.

However, other categories which may include gold (specifically
justpicked; unpaid is in the code too, but that can't actually happen
in-game) were treated the same way: if the category included gold, no
filter could exclude it. As a result, if the hero had just picked up
gold, 'P'+'C', 'P'+'U', 'P'+'X', and 'P'+'B' all showed the just-picked
gold pieces -- there was no way to filter justpicked to exclude gold
the BUCX categories. This approach made less sense to me: justpicked as
a category may include gold, but filtering by BUCX actually has utility
there, and selecting it doesn't carry a "show me gold in addition to the
other filtered items" implication.

Maintain the same special treatment of selecting the coins category, but
drop it for justpicked and unpaid. In those cases whether gold is
listed in the justpicked result will depend on it not being filtered out
by the selected BUCX categories (and which one it belongs to, in turn,
depends on the 'goldX' option).

Just-picked-up gold was included in the list of items in the just-picked

handling of gold for 'I'/#inventtype (to accomodate the 'goldX' option)
caused it to be excluded from consideration as a just-picked item.

inventory, consist with other category-menu-based actions.

Michael Meyer 1ee9e6ae3d wizmgender: include corpstat gender in object name
Add another use to wizmgender: when it is enabled, include the gender
specified in corpstat flags in the name of a statue, corpse, or
figurine, since it can influence various things but otherwise remains
invisible (for monsters without gendered names). A little while ago
lichen corpses weren't stacking because, despite being a neuter monster,
the corpses they produced were being flagged as female or male; this
could be useful for debugging issues along those lines.

The wizard-mode option to highlight female monsters stopped having any
in-game effect after cb0c21e. Formerly it caused female monsters to be
highlighted with a red background (red color + inverse); this commit
uses inverse video only without overriding their color. Ensuring the
color override works consistently with the ENHANCED_SYMBOLS 24-bit color
doesn't seem worth it for what is a very niche debugging option, and I
think inverse video should probably suffice.

It also used to be a TTY-only option, but this enables it in curses as
well.

Michael Meyer ee002ee91e Don't prompt to continue eating with one bite left
There was already handling in place to prevent showing the "continue
eating?" prompt for one-gulp food (like a wraith corpse), since the hero
would finish eating the food on that turn regardless of what the player
answered to the prompt. Resuming an interrupted multi-bite meal with
only a single bite remaining had the same problem, but wasn't accounted
for in the special "one gulp" handling. Modify the condition so it
checks for the number of bites remaining in the food, not the number of
bites total, and show the prompt only when there's more than one bite
left.

Michael Meyer 6d222e88b0 Allow travel on water with IDed water walking
If you have a known source of water walking (i.e. are wearing formally
IDed water walking boots), allow travel to path you over water and allow
running over water. A transition from land to water will still cause
the hero to stop in modes other than the shift+dir "move until you hit
something" running mode, so that you don't careen across the entire
level unless you really want to.

Also, fix running over water when levitation or flying is equipped.
This stopped working after f88dce6970, only allowing the hero to move
one square at a time. And prevent travel from pathing the hero into a
wall of water even if flying or levitation is equipped, since they don't
allow you to bypass that terrain.

Michael Meyer 141b568944 Make monsters trigger landmines based on weight
The 1/3 likelihood of a monster setting off a landmine seemed a little
arbitrary to me, especially in that it applied equally to all monsters,
from giants to insects. Change the flat 33% chance to one based on the
monster's body weight, so that lightweight monsters have little to no
chance of setting off a mine, with the likelihood increasing from there
with the monster's weight.

With a trigger weight of 400, as it is in this commit, a dingo has a 0%
chance of setting off a landmine, a gelatinous cube the same 33% chance
as before, an elf a 50% chance, a human a 72% chance, and something the
size of a dragon (ignoring the reduced likelihood for flying monsters) a
91% chance.

Add possible pet intrinsic gain from swallowing a monster in one gulp
(in situations where a corpse is created and eaten by the engulfer),
making it equivalent in this regard to eating the corpse off the floor.

One possible extension or modification would be to reduce the chance of
receiving an intrinsic when the corpse is consumed via digestion attack,
similar to how the corpse nutrition is 50% of its normal value. I
didn't incorporate that into this commit since the chance of receiving
an intrinsic is tied to monster level rather than nutrition, so I wasn't
sure if it made sense.

Michael Meyer bc2427167a Fix: vampire shapeshifting in a door
Someone mentioned in #nethack today that a vampire had turned into a fog
cloud, moved under a door, then turned back into a vampire while still
sharing a space with a closed door. There already existed some code
intended to prevent this in cases where the vampire is killed in one
form and revives in another, but voluntary transformations (from
decide_to_shapeshift) weren't included. The existing code in mondead
and vamp_stone also apparently missed a minor edge case: because the
code between the definition of in_door and its use included an expels
call, it would be outdated/incorrect in cases where expels() placed the

Michael Meyer fd3f50ebba Reset justpicked only when picking up items
With reset_justpicked called unconditionally near the top of pickup, it
was impossible to pick up some items, walk over to a chest, and use 'P'
to deposit the items with autopickup on: pickup is called with every
move, and autopickup allowed execution to reach the reset_justpicked
call whenever the hero stepped on a square with an item in it. As a
result, stepping onto a square with a container would clear all the
justpicked flags in inventory (pressing ',' and then declining to pick
anything up would have a similar effect).

Instead, call reset_justpicked only when the hero (or autopickup) has
actually selected an item to pick up. This makes the code a bit more
complicated than before -- I don't think there's a way to do it with
just one reset_justpicked call any more, due to the structure of pickup
and the need to call reset_justpicked before actually putting any items
into inventory -- but it means that justpicked info will be much less
ephemeral and more useful when managing stashes, etc.

Michael Meyer 092e8c37fd Fix: wished-for doors in wizmode always vertical
Wishing for a door is intended to retain the existing 'horizontal' value

all door wishes to create vertical doors. Preserve it as intended.

Michael Meyer fd55dfba1f Fix: segfault on wizmode terrain wish
The new livelogging of wish results caused a segfault when attempting to
handle the results of a wizard mode terrain wish, since a successful
terrain wish returns a nonzero obj which nonetheless is just a dummy
object. Move the existing check for that further up to skip all the
livelogging stuff entirely, since such wishes will never happen in a
real game and exist purely for debugging purposes.

Michael Meyer 991e739af4 Fix: loot regression, auto-select with justpicked
When using 'A'/autopick with the 'items you just picked up' category,
instead of autoselecting all items within that category, it selected
every item in your inventory (like it used to work before 3.7). Just
blew up a bag of holding because of this.

While testing the fix for that, I noticed 'P' wasn't working at all
with menustyle:traditional -- you could select it as a filter, but it
didn't actually get applied to anything, so it would end up prompting
you for every item in inventory. Fix both those things.

Michael Meyer 4e3812b5e4 Fix: mdisplacem stoning and gloves
Apparently this is a bug that's existed since mon-vs-mon displacement
was introduced in 2003 (in 89c785e): if a monster displaced a footrice,
having gloves on would make it vulnerable to being stoned, while having
bare hands would protect it. Switch it around so wearing gloves blocks
petrification, as it does under other circumstances.

Also add a message explaining why the displacing monster was stoned (if
the displacement attempt is visible to the hero), so the "Foo turns to
stone!" message has some context.

Michael Meyer 66c70eb453 Fix: invisible pudding globs
When a pudding was killed by a monster (player-caused deaths were exempt
because of a 'backup' newsym call in xkilled), and the resulting glob
ended up on the pudding's square (whether because there were no adjacent
globs, or because the adjacent glob merged into the new one rather than
vice-versa), the glob wouldn't be drawn onto the map until the squre was
redrawn with ^R or similar. This was because the early return for globs
in make_corpse skipped the typical newsym call near the end of the
function.

In this commit I just added a newsym call to the glob case in
make_corpse, but adding a newsym call to monkilled as a guard against
similar cases (equivalent to the one in xkilled) seems like a possible
extension. I wasn't sure if there's a particular reason it's not
included in monkilled, so I didn't mess with it.

Michael Meyer 0c0262eab0 Handle -eaux plurals in makeplural/makesingular
I noticed a comment about -eau pluralizing as -eaux, e.g. "gateau" ->
"gateaux", was not consistent with the actual output of makeplural.
Same thing with "VAX" -> "VAXen" in the line below it; they're very old
comments, so maybe they were originally meant to point out some plurals
makeplural got wrong? Since they predate the addition of "oxen" and
"geese" to one_off[] (and the array itself), it seems like the other
special cases mentioned in the comments would also have been wrong at
the time they were written.

Address this horrifying pastry-related oversight by adding handling for
'-eaux' plurals to makeplural, with an exception for 'bureau' (plural
'bureaus'; according to the dictionary, 'bureaux' is an acceptable
variant but 'bureaus' is more common, at least in American English).
There's also an exception for 'Bordeaux' (as in a bottle of the wine),
since the singular and plural are the same.

A bit surprised this wasn't already in there, since 'gateau' is a real
food item and seems like a much more likely fruit name than some of the
inedible items makeplural has special rules for.

Also add " au " to compounds[] in singplur_compound, so that 'gateau au
chocolat' will pluralize correctly to 'gateaux au chocolat'. Without
that change, the result is 'gateau au chocolats'.

Michael Meyer 92999914c8 Prevent hero from writing Pratchett books
The hero's ability to channel Pratchett and write his books with a magic
marker once she had read or IDed at least one of them seemed strange,
especially cases like an illiterate hero doing it as her first

The image of the hero sitting down in the dungeon to write a novel is
funny, so it feels like a good spot for a funny message. I'm not

Michael Meyer 0585fee5ff Designate high altars with dedicated altarmask bit
High altars and normal temple altars had identical altarmasks, so
there was no way to distinguish between the two based on the altarmask
alone. Instead, anywhere it was necessary to determine whether an altar
was a high altar included a check whether the hero was currently the
Astral Plane or Moloch's Sanctum, and assumed any temple altar was the
high altar.

Since there's an extra, unused bit in altarmask anyway, use it to
explicitly mark high altars -- the lua level files already distinguish
between normal temple altars and so-called 'sanctum' altars anyway, so
rather than throwing away this distinction when generating the level,
keep it in the altarmask and use it in place of various u.uz checks.

I think this would require incrementing EDITLEVEL again...

Michael Meyer d3d5f7f88b Fix: force-fight 'unknown obstacle' descriptions
This is intended to address a couple quirks with force-fighting an
unoccupied spot that I noticed:

 * Now that furniture is considered 'solid', an object is much more
likely to be sitting on the square, obscuring the terrain glyph. As
a result, the current glyph is no longer sufficient to accurately
describe the contents of the spot -- e.g., an altar with a corpse on
top of it was being described as "an unknown obstacle", even when the
hero knew exactly what furniture was there.

 * When blind and attacking an unexplored 'solid' square, the attacked
position would always be described as 'the stone', even something
like a fountain or sink which didn't seem likely to be confused with
   a stone wall.

 * The feedback for attacking stone was previously changed from 'solid
rock' to 'stone' in order to be consistent with the feedback for
attacking an unseen wall, but they still weren't quite the same
   ("stone" vs "the stone").

 * The 'stone' feedback for all STONE/SCORR spots was incorrect on
levels flagged as arboreal, where stone is rendered and described as
   trees.

This relies on back_to_glyph for positions where the hero is aware of
the terrain and certain other spots (like stone, walls, etc) for which
back_to_glyph produces good results even if they're unseen, and falls
back to the generic "unknown terrain" in other cases.

Pretty long commit message for such a small commit, but oh well...

Michael Meyer a384f0353b Fix: "in the the purple worm's entrails"
The message printed if the hero threw gold while swallowed by an animal
used "the <mon_nam>'s entrails", which produced a doubled 'the'. It
could also use the wrong possessive form, since it doesn't take
advantage of any of the special case handling in s_suffix. I think the
only way that could ever be a problem with the current cast of engulfers
is if the hero was swallowed by a purple worm while hallucinating, but I
changed it to use s_suffix anyway.

When the fountain quaffing monster detection effect was triggered on a

was the only scenario where drinking from a fountain wouldn't print
anything, so it stood out as unusual.

Print a messsage in the case monster detection fails, to make it
consistent with other fountain effects and ensure it's clear the hero
did still drink from the fountain on that turn. I used "the water
tastes like nothing" for the (sort of tenuous) connection to there being
nothing living on the level, but there might be a better message to put
in there.

Michael Meyer fb512bac4f Fix: repeated 'hit with a wielded weapon' logging
The "hit with a wielded weapon for the first time" livelog line could be
produced repeatedly: it was triggered by hitting a monster with a
wielded object of any sort, but the u.uconduct.weaphit counter was only
incremented if hitting with an actual 'weapon' (a WEAPON_CLASS or
is_weptool item). As a result, if a non-weapon-using hero whipped out a
non-weapon item -- a cockatrice corpse, for example -- and started going
to town on some monsters, the livelog message would be repeated with
every hit.

Michael Meyer 480ba917a1 Collisions while hurtling can stone participants
Hurtling into a monster is described as "bumping into" it, so it makes
sense that hurtling willy-nilly into a cockatrice (or vice-versa) could
result in petrification. Since hurtling for the hero usually involves
"floating in the opposite direction" (presumably backwards) after
throwing an item, check whether the hero is wearing any body armor which
would cover their torso rather than looking for gloves. Do the same for
monsters on the general basis that it's a bodily collision, and for the
sake of consistency.

Michael Meyer c6363d74a7 Fix: levitating/flying monsters moving over liquid
Commit c1a6dd4 was meant to prevent flying, levitating, and clinging
monsters from considering walls of water as acceptable movement
destinations, even outside of the Plane of Water. However, it was
evaluating the monster's starting position instead of possible places to
move to, and the evaluation was 'backwards' (the equivalent of
IS_WATERWALL, instead of !IS_WATERWALL).

The result was that non-swimming monsters could only move onto any kind
of water or lava square if the position they were moving from was a
WATER square. Change this so that instead of the starting position,
each potential destination spot's status as a wall of water is evaluated
in turn, and reverse the effect of the test so that it blocks walls of
water instead of allowing them.

Michael Meyer 1e951db9bc Fix: monster hurtling and liquid
A monster hurtling over liquid would drown immediately the instant it
touched the first square of water, even if normally it would have kept
moving (e.g. hurtling over a short moat). Additionally, its placement
on liquid would not take into consideration other monsters, so it could
overwrite an existing monster on that spot and lead to an impossible,
and/or two monsters occupying a single position.

Fix these issues, so that liquid effects like drowning only happen if
the monster ends up in liquid at the end of the hurtle, and so that
other monsters in the way will stop it early even if they're floating
over or swimming on a pool/water/lava square.

Also use canspotmon instead of canseemon for the wiztelekinesis debug
command.

Michael Meyer 89bbe77010 Fix: tty map weirdness after 'full-screen' menu
When a 'full-screen' (cw->offx and cw->offy both 0) menu was immediately
followed by an offset menu -- as in the case of selecting certain
options from the options menu, or using loot to take out/put in items
after using ':' to describe the contents of a very full container --
there were some odd interactions with the map.

Only certain parts of the map near/under the menu window would be

a getlin prompt would cause the entire map to be redrawn, with parts
intersecting the window being drawn on top of it and obscuring it.
Flushing the display immediately after the docrt call when closing a

Michael Meyer 70f263f0ce Fix: unpaid_cost regression
Recent commit 5c14f3e fixed an issue with unpaid_cost when the hero is
in two shops at once (e.g. phasing through a shared wall), but
introduced new problems with finding the cost of a container with unpaid
contents -- an unpaid item in a player-owned container would generate
the same "unpaid_cost: object wasn't on any bill" impossible as the
issue the commit fixed.

The main issue was that finding the bill entry used to depend on finding
the shopkeeper, but after the change, finding the shopkeeper depended on
finding the bill entry; for a container with unpaid items which has a
shopkeeper, but no bill entry, this caused issues.

Revert part of 5c14f3e and tackle the problem another way, which should
correctly handle unpaid items in inventory or a container, even if they
belong to a mixture of different shops and/or the hero is on a space
shared between multiple shops.

finish_meating was checking whether the monster in question was a
chameleon/shapechanger, rather than whether it was a mimic, in deciding
which monsters should be allowed to maintain their current appearance
once they finish eating. This meant that true mimics had their
appearance reset, while a chameleon, vampire, etc, who ate a mimic

amazing living tripe ration which followed the hero around throughout

Michael Meyer c9cef70d51 Writing scrolls by type-name followup
Don't allow type-name of a scroll that has since been formally
identified to override a real scroll name.

For example, if a user typenames a scroll of fire 'earth', then IDs
fire but doesn't change the typename (reasonable, since it doesn't show
up anywhere in inventory at that point), if they try to write 'earth'
with a magic marker, don't produce a scroll of fire just because it's
still type-named 'earth'. At that point they know it's not a scroll of
earth and it's no longer reasonable to assume they mean to use the
typename.

In other words, if a user-assigned typename matches a real scroll type,
write the scroll with the typename -- unless the player knows for sure
it doesn't match the actual scroll (whether because the actual scroll is
already IDed, or the typenamed scroll has been IDed as something else).
In that case write (or attempt to write) the actual scroll as though the
typename didn't exist.

Michael Meyer 00b3b955af Fix: baalz_fixup didn't account for level rotation
Because some spots in the fly's 'legs' on the Baalzebub lair level are
specified as pools in the level file, then later converted to walls in a
post-generation fixup routine, monsters can be generated on those spots
and then left walled up and inaccessible, Cask of Amontillado style.
For the love of God, makemon-tresor!

Some code already existed to relocate these monsters after generating
the level, but it depends on misorientated 'leg segments' being fixed up
in a particular way. That wasn't being triggered because it didn't
account for the possible rotation of the level; as a result, the
monsters in the leg segments wouldn't be relocated, and the leg segments
themselves would continue to have the wrong orientation.

Account for possible level rotation so that the monsters are relocated
properly (and the leg segments are 'fixed').

Michael Meyer 2abe08d0bf Formally block artifacts as random box contents
Another (latent) case of an artifact possibly being generated and
immediately deleted: part of the process of a mimic disguising itself as
an item involves generating a random object, then deleting it. If this
item is a box or sack, it will generate with random contents, which will
be deleted along with the container. If artifacts are allowed as random
box contents, this can silently remove an artifact from being available
in the game.

This is effectively blocked already, since none of the artifacts
eligible for random generation are items from classes marked as valid
box contents (see boxiprobs[] in mkobj.c). Nonetheless, formally
preventing artifacts from generating as box contents will guarantee this
issue won't crop up if a randomly generated artifact tool, ring, etc, is
added in the future.

Michael Meyer b242fbce5a Fix: artifacts silently removed from the game
Death drops will generate a random item, which may be an artifact.
After the object is created, some rules are applied to check whether its
size matches the monster that dropped it; if it fails these checks,
the item is deleted. aosdict recently pointed out that if the death
drop was an artifact, this would permanently remove it from the game.

Use artifact_exist(..., FALSE) in various cases where potential
artifact objects are created, then immediately removed. This will
prevent artifacts from being removed from play by marking the artifact
as available to create again.

Michael Meyer 38d027d1f9 Fix: travel from 'interesting' position
(including resuming travel after being interrupted)

Attempting to travel from an 'interesting' spot that would normally
stop travel mid-attempt (next to a door, next to a monster, etc) would
fail to get off the ground, because the 'interesting thing' would halt
travel before taking the first step.

Prior to 433f0cc, initiating travel would immediately trigger a call to
domove in rhack; as part of refactoring travel, the order of events in
rhack was changed so that this didn't happen immediately as before. Add
domove to the end of dotravel_target to produce a similar effect to the
previous arrangement.

domove also zeroes out g.domove_attempting, which I think is the reason
c0c617c seemed to mitigate some of the issues associated with this
problem (e.g. travel target selection seemingly not registering right
away).

Michael Meyer a9358eb13d Fix up msgs when dropping obj on trapdoor
Messages for dropping an object on a trapdoor or hole seemed to
imply they still operate by the rules of a pit (that any object on the
same square as the trap is automatically inaccessible). Since this is
no longer true for trapdoors and holes as of 1b7c372f, it seems
misleading to say an item "tumbles into the hole" even when it doesn't
fall through and stays on the current level.

Even for an item which really did fall through to the level below, these
messages were redundant since they were immediately followed by
near-identical messages from down_gate(dokick.c).

Limit the "tumbles into the pit" messages to pits only, and rely on the
standard down_gate message for items which fall through a trap door

semi-permanently in ink, or--if the marker has no remaining charges--can
draw in the dust as with a normal blunt item. Handling in engrave after
a recent refactor (9c6a5fc423) didn't fully cover this second case, and
as a result using an empty marker to engrave would deduct a charge per
attempt and cause an impossible. This could be exploited by repeatedly
engraving with the same empty marker to underflow the marker charges.

Michael Meyer e8cb683ad0 Fix: off-by-one error in movecmd
The for loop which iterates through the list of movement keys in
movecmd(cmd.c) was updated in 5abf948116 to count down to 0 instead of
up to the end of the list. This commit inadvertently introduced an
off-by-one error which started the loop one past the actual end of the
array. On my system this made 'H' stop working as the 'run West' key.

Michael Meyer a41176d22b Fix #436: writing type-named scrolls
When using a marker, it is possible to write a scroll based on the
type-name assigned to it by the user. Somewhat unintuitively, this
system broke down if the assigned name was identical to the real name of
a scroll type: trying to write a scroll by its previously-assigned name
'scare mon' or 'id' would be guaranteed to succeed, but this wouldn't be
the case if the user-assigned name was 'scare monster' or 'identify'.

Revise dowrite(write.c) to prefer a user-assigned type-name to the
real name of a scroll that isn't already formally known, while
continuing to prefer the real name of an identified scroll to both.

Michael Meyer d8dc16e393 Add 'readable' Hawaiian shirt designs
Functionally similar to reading a T-shirt or apron, but rather than
actual text printed on the shirt being displayed, the design of the
Hawaiian shirt is described: for example, "hula dancers on an orange
background" or "tropical fish on an abstract background". Much like
T-shirts have their text included in the game-end inventory list ('a
blessed +2 T-shirt with text "foo"'), Hawaiian shirts now have a brief
description of their design appended to their item name under the same
circumstances.

Because 'reading' a Hawaiian shirt doesn't actually involve reading
text, using the 'r' command in this way doesn't break illiterate
conduct.

Michael Meyer 9ba4b6ad4d Fix: uninitialized buffer in mhitm theft feedback
If a monster with a theft attack (nymph or leprechaun) stole something
from an invisible monster (e.g. while under the influence of conflict),
and the attacking monster was not itself invisible, the monster name
buffer used when printing the "<foo> suddenly disappears!" message would
be used while still uninitialized. The attacking monster's name was
only copied into the buffer if the defending monster was visible, but
would be used regardless to print the pline if the attacking monster was
visible and teleported away successfully after the attack.

Michael Meyer 616311125c Fix: nymph theft vs monster
Nymphs' item theft attack against other monsters was broken in 1696019,
when a break used to select a particular item in the target monster's
inventory was changed to an early return.

Michael Meyer 77d4b4c955 Allow custom increment amounts in #wizintrinsic
Let users of #wizintrinsic set a specific amount by which they want to
increment each particular timeout, by entering a count/typing in
numerals before selecting the item in the list. I think doing it this
way should be pretty intuitive to players who are familiar with the
'enter count -> make selection' flow of normal inventory menus in
NetHack, and is simpler than using a separate prompt, as was mentioned
as a possibility in a comment.

When an intrinsic is selected without entering a count, the increment
will continue to default to the previous value of 30; this value is set
via the DEFAULT_TIMEOUT_INCR macro.

I also deleted a redundant declaration of wiz_intrinsic; the duplicate
seems to have been added by mistake in ff6139c6c5.

Michael Meyer a29b76e1bf Add Sokoban penalty for dismounting onto a boulder
Because landing_spot will select a square containing a boulder as a
last-resort option, provided no other squares are accessible, it is
possible for the player to maneuver into a place where this could be
exploited when completing Sokoban (e.g. to get into a corner that would
normally be inaccessible, from which position an otherwise-blocked
boulder can be pushed away). This behavior should incur the same penalty
as exploitation of other Sokoban 'loopholes'.

Michael Meyer e7e418c1ec Prevent inappropriate diagonal dismounts
Dismounting a steed checked whether the target spot was accessible and
whether there was a monster on it, but not whether it could actually be
accessed by the hero through normal movement. As a result, dismounting
allowed the hero to pass between diagonal gaps that would normally cause
a "you are carrying too much to get through" pline; this could leave
them in a position where they are effectively stuck, unable to remount
their steed or move away without dropping their inventory.

This also could be abused by dismounting in Sokoban to squeeze between
boulders in a way that would normally be impossible.

Using a successful result test_move as one of the requirements for a
spot to be valid prevents this and limits valid dismount targets to
squares that would normally be accessible through standard movement.

Michael Meyer 2df4f08c0b Add liquid flow to land mine explosions
Land mine explosions did not call liquid_flow(dig.c), and as a result
the pit created by an exploding land mine would never fill with adjacent
water or lava, as pits created by other sources -- digging, breaking a
wand, and earthquake -- can do.

This commit adds the appropriate calls to liquid_flow and fillholetyp to
blow_up_landmine so that land mine explosions may fill with water like
other pits do.

The call to losehp in dotrap had to be moved from after to before
blow_up_landmine, since waiting to call losehp when the pit can fill
with water could lead to silly messages (``That was a close one. You
die...''). After this change, a land mine that killed a character would
be retained unexploded in a bones file, because death would occur before
the call to blow_up_landmine. To avoid this issue, the land mine is
converted to a pit before calling losehp; blow_up_landmine does not
check whether the target trap is in fact a landmine so works as usual
even if the trap is converted to a pit, and will delete the pit in cases
where it should not exist.

Michael Meyer 6ae7818346 Refactor bones search loop
Using a for loop instead of an if and a do/while makes the code much
more clear and concise, so that it's easier to understand what the
function does at a glance. The actual approach to iterating through the
current level's bones files and searching for a match is more or less
unchanged.

Michael Meyer 02ba5e4811 Improve consistency of polearm targeting rules
Multiple functions are involved in the process of targeting and
attacking an enemy with a polearm or lance, and these functions
previously used inconsistent tests to determine which targets were
legal. For instance, find_poleable_mon would give up immediately if the
hero was blind, while neither get_valid_polearm_position nor use_pole
cared as long as the hero could detect a target on the square (e.g. by
ESP). find_poleable_mon considered warning symbols as potential
targets, but use_pole discarded them. get_valid_polearm_position
considered moats and pools to be illegal targets, but use_pole would
let the hero successfully hit a monster on those squares; on the
other hand, get_valid_polearm_position would mark squares that were not
visible and did not contain a known monster as legal targets, while
find_poleable_mon and use_pole would exclude them.

Obviously this was inconsistent and could introduce confusion for
polearm users, who would potentially need to explicitly target squares
marked "(illegal)" at some point over the course of their game, among
other problems. This commit makes polearm targeting tests more
consistent; the following rules are applied to positions within the
appropriate range:

* Monsters which are detected by any means that reveals an actual
monster glyph are legal to target, even if the hero is blind

* Monsters the hero cannot detect, but is aware of -- i.e. those
represented by an 'I' -- are similarly legal to target

* Monsters detected via warning are not legal targets, since the hero
does not have as strong a sense of where exactly they are, their shape
  and size, etc

* Statues are legal targets, but will not be suggested by
find_poleable_mon unless the hero is impaired (confused, stunned, or
hallucinating); the same is true of tame/peaceful monsters

* Apparently empty squares, including those containing an undetected
monster, are legal to target unless they cannot be seen (whether due
to blindness or a very dark room/level)

* Positions which are otherwise legal but are blocked by an obstruction like a
tree or pillar are not legal targets
