branch only. This adds a check when setting a new fruit so that if no fruits
have been created since the last time the option has been set, the current
fruit is overwritten. Result: the user cannot repeatedly set the fruit
option and overflow the maximum fruit number.

Found on the newsgroup: someone pointed out that you don't get a message
when you eat a ring of increase damage. They thought it was intentional--
it's not.
This adds a further throttle to chain summoning. Monsters can only summon
spellcasting nasties if the nasties are lower level than the summoner, which
makes infinite chains impossible (as long as the player figures out which
monster to kill first).
This fixes a long worm display bug. The bug wasn't really in the worm code, it
was in goodpos(). goodpos() could place worm segments on top of one another.
If you split a worm when the tail was located on top of the head, the tail
would be removed from the screen, making the head seem to vanish.
Get rid of the obsolete comments about summon spells also aggravating.
The effect on balance of not aggravating is negligible, because nasty() already
wakes up most of the monsters it creates.
This throttles insect creation through monster spell casting. Especially
insects. It was creating m_lev worth of insects--for a 25th level priest,
that means every batch of insects was size 25!
I also lowered the range for nasties creation for similar reasons.
Fixing some iron ball/teleds stuff:
-- If the player can pass through walls, ignore all checks for walls, or else
things will behave weirdly.
-- Instead of using the kludge "if the distance is >2 it must be a teleport",
pass a parameter indicating whether they crawled or teleported onto the new
space. This fixes a special case, where the player moved one space and the
ball didn't move, but the chain moved through solid rock. This is acceptable
if teleporting and unacceptable if dragging.
This also required some rearrangement of teleds() so that u.ux,u.uy
are set after placing the ball, not before. I'm still not sure the pit
filling line is in the right place; anyone know?
-- add some comments so I can look at the code in a month and still know what
I did.
Most of this patch is just adding the new parameter.
Well, this proved rather annoying. Problems included:
-- the solid rock problem that was noticed
-- teleporting to a spot two spaces away but on the other side of solid rock
could also leave the chain in solid rock
-- in one place I said chainx instead of ballx, which could cause problems with
teleporting
-- the teleport code moved the player before moving the ball, violating the
assumption that the player hasn't been moved yet (which only caused problems
after I added the solid rock fix).
Ball movement still isn't quite right, though the cases are really rare. I
may fix them later.
Format multiple bad wizkit items a little better. It will scroll off the screen
if there are more than a screen of bad items, but that's probably not too
likely.
This fixes the wizkit so that if someone wishes for a non-object such as
a trap, not only is no message printed, but we don't try to create anything.
Incidentally, if you have two bad wizkit items in a row, you get told to hit
space to continue, then you can hit space, then the error message for the
second bad item is printed on the same line as the first hit space message.
(I haven't tried to fix that.)
This prevents wizkit items that aren't objects from having their names
printed on the screen if they are gold pieces, traps, or similar.
(Note that the only one of those that actually works is gold. For some reason
if you put "a hole" (for instance) in the wizkit, the hole will not get
created, even though it will, even on the stairs, if the wizard wishes for it
in-game.)
This fixes beta bug 3020. It was hard to notice because the presence of a
monster in the room stops your occupation anyway, so it wasn't triggered unless
you were blind.
Fix a minor cloning problem; clones didn't retain the monster's name or
tameness. (The name *was* retained if you were cloned.) I also added a
minor change in wizard mode to display a few tameness fields of a dog.
This changes monster spellcasting to remove the fallthroughs. It simply loops
now until it finds a valid spell to cast, so if the spell is useless another
random spell is picked rather than falling through to whatever happens to be
the next one in the list.
This will inevitably change some spellcasting probabilities.
The inability to wish for a blessed +2 fireproof speed boots really was a bug.
Prefixes are checked for inside a loop which should allow them to be in any
order; for some reason +nnn and empty were outside that loop.
Also adding the secret door detection fix to betabugs 3.3.0. (Is it safe to
hand-modify betabugs 3.3.2?)
There was an old bug where a wand of secret door detection was identified
even though it didn't find anything.
It was unconfirmed, but I had no trouble confirming it. It happened because
the wand worked on squares that were couldsee() but which (because they weren't
lit) you couldn't actually see. The wand would detect the secret corridor and
then not display it because it was out of sight.
I fixed it to display the corridor, in sight or not (I could have had it not
detect anything, but the wand is fairly weak already.)
Duuuh. Of course adding objects already changed the editlevel.
Anyway, here's the fix I was working on. It only matters in a very obscure
situation. (Also, the quest leader still speaks no matter what he's
polymorphed into.)

This fixes the problem with my monster spell changes which let monsters
summon monsters around you when they don't even know you're around.
The summoned monsters should appear where the monster thinks you are, if
you're invisible or displaced.
I have not prevented them from summoning monsters when you are in a temple,
nor have I prevented them from aggravating monsters several times when you're
out of sight.
Messages should be a little smarter, taking into account number of monsters
and invisibility/displacement.

This adds <Someone>'s lens patch.
This is probably it for me adding in any more user-contributed patches for
3.3.2 (except maybe coin flipping; does anyone object to it?)
--Ken A.
Testing the Astral Plane showed that the summon insects spell was a little
ridiculous with the new monster spellcasting routines. You can easily
have enough priests within range of you that insects are summoned almost every
round. I've made this saner by halving the frequency of the spell. The player
will still probably encounter summoned insects a lot more than before.
This adds the BUC-patch, except that it includes four separate choices for
blessed/cursed/uncursed/unknown. The patch only applies to full menu styles.
--Ken A
(Incidentally, I have a suggestion: when deciding what's the first line for
purposes of mailing out messages, use the first nonblank line...)
time. I think it's because the modern data.base contains so many quotes that
have nothing to do with Nethack that nobody tries to use data.base to figure
out how to handle monsters any more.
Summary of spell changes:
-- wimpiness of 'default' spell fixed by doing half damage for magic resistance
instead of 1 damage, and using half monster level instead of 1/3. It may
still need tweaking, but is much better than before.
-- 'default' spell for cleric monsters is now the wounds spell, by analogy with
wizard monsters.
-- added clerical lightning strike, flame strike, gush of water
-- all spells should now say the monster is casting a spell, and all spells
should have messages. (Side effect: monsters speeding up by other means
also give a message saying so).
-- casting undirected spells is not affected by whether the monster knows
where you are. Monsters that are attacking your displaced image, that are
several squares away, or that are peaceful can use undirected spells.
-- messages should correctly say whether the spell is undirected (a monster
was always casting at thin air or pointing at you and cursing, without checking
to see if the spell wouldn't require pointing)
-- Monsters which are attacking your displaced image, etc. use up mspec_used.
If they are casting an undirected spell, the spell still works.
-- Monsters which are not attacking can cast spells that don't attack.
-- If a monster didn't have ranged spellcasting ability (which most don't),
it would print a curse message from buzzmu() every round it was at range,
creating a useless stream of constant curse messages
I still haven't made spellcasters "smarter" in the sense of noticing whether
you have reflection, fire resistance, etc. That opens a big can of worms
because it would mean giving monsters a memory.
Known bug: the higher level a monster is, the more spells it has; since it
chooses a noncombat spell by randomly picking a spell and casting if it
happens to be noncombat, the higher level the monster is the greater the
chance of getting nothing.
